Thanks for watching! Keep your eyes open and have a sharp pencil before buying. I wouldn't let all the unknowns keep you from pursuing your dream. I don't regret it! I just wish I could have a few do overs. Good luck! If I can help in any way feel free to reach out.
First time viewer. I went experimental and bought a RV-8 to keep the cost down. The new panel will set you back but obviously you know where you want to go ie instrument rating. Great, honest vid, thanks for sharing.
jcheck, RV-8s are beautiful aircraft! I think that the experimental is a very good option in terms of controlling expenses. Its pretty amazing how far they have come. Happy flying and thanks for watching!
Spending $10k on glass cockpit updates just sounds to me like ripping the soul out of a Skywagon. Spend $1,000 on fuel and find a CFI who will fly around with you and orient you to the Idaho backcountry. After 20 or 30 hours of cross-country and bush flying I'm sure that steam panel will be quite familiar. Training and Experience are always more worthy investments than shiny toys. But to each their own... Thanks for the videos!
Hope you're still flying! I got into airplane a bit cheaper, but it's definitely an adventure. I like the idea of a four seater conventional for some back country fun, but that's not currently my primary mission so it'll have to wait a bit.
Thank you sir for the information on the operating cost of owning a Cessna 180 and getting your own mechanic to saving money and Prebuy inspection and I know that it’s a option if you want to go through this with the buyer and the seller and boreal scope to look inside the cylinder walls to make sure no corrosion from setting and most of all the compression checks are in the 70s . It’s not good if you have lower numbers in the 61/64s . I’ve never realized that this is a expensive business tool but unfortunately you have to make sure that what works for you or your company is it the right one. See you on the next one. Thanks
Thanks for posting this it's super helpful! Definitely considering purchasing a 180 right now and hoping that since I'm and A&P I can cut a lot of that variable expense out. At least as far as labor. Quick question though, how many hours did you fly in that year?
Are you still happy with the AV 30s? I can’t find any that I can gat installed for under $6,000. Also. Overhauling, the vacuum system is no longer a viable thing. Vacuum gyros just don’t work well and you have to get used to the idea or replace them. I think you did the right thing.
Hello, The AV 30 in my opinion is a great stand by instrument. I was trying to use it as a primary flight display and it becomes very crowded. The second AV 30was used as a directional indicator this was a HUGE mistake it processes so badly that it was almost worthless. I would never recommend on for a directional indicator. I have since moved on to a Aspen pro max plus as my primary and the AV 30 as a back up i am happy with this set up. Good luck! Thanks for watching!
Did your insurance include hull coverage? Or is that just liability? I have a very similar story to you but for hull insurance I’m waaaay over what you were at including your first year
In this video I had the hull coverage for 60k. I have since increased the hull coverage because I have done several upgrades. I am sorry to hear that your cost was much higher... I shopped the rates with AOPA. Thanks for watching!
wellhell man ihave 2 of them a 1972 with big tundra tires full glass panel and my baby is the 1977 also full glasspanel medium tires. however ihave them both in llc's and am self insured. but i have over 5000hours of tailwheel time.my 77 just had new fuel tanks never tell the state where you or how much you paid for it. i tell you the states suck as far as taxes i paid on paper 1 dollar so good luck to the taxes you do not know how to buy a plane lol i just also bought a pitts special s1. always buy a plane with a recent annual. but i also replaced the 77s engine with a 300 hp. t3 blade reversable prop the 72 came with it also stol. my annuals never run more than 4500 . nice plane but you need to find a better mechanic and learn to do the work yourself. i also fly a lot up into bc remote very remote river banks. learn to store fuel in route wow you pay a lot annualy. but the smart thing to do is buy some land build your own hanger. 45 grand for radios? shit my bill was 175 grand
Bought a cub 670$ pre buy 2950$ insurance 1450$ tank sealant parking brake1 egt probe 500$ annual 500$ pitot stat transponder elt recert 450$ intercom upgrade 250$ in oil change No tied down fee :D Tot 6770$ 190hrs at avg 70$ in fuel oil 13 300$ in fuel 8l Tot 20 070$ cad
My fixed and variable costs per year for my C150 is about $6000 if I fly 100hrs/year (hangar, insurance, oil changes, fuel, annual...and assuming no major maintenance costs). $6k/yr would only buy me 46hrs of rental flights per year with limited options on doing overnight trips, weekend trips, and having to deal with availability issues every time I want to fly.
Nice and honest and humble. Keep the videos coming.
Simon,
Thanks for your kind words.
Great insights and thank you for sharing. I really appreciate your content. I would love a C-180 and your info still doesn't deter me :)

I understand your point of view... I will be heading back to Idaho next spring for more mountain training. Thanks for watching!
an iPad and a Stratus would have been far cheaper "glass upgrade".
Hope you're still flying!

William,
Good luck with your ownership journey! There is nothing like flying!

Bernard,
Thanks for watching! I appreciate your feedback!
Glad you're going glass. 180 and 185 with big screens are just the most incredible looking planes. You throwing on a sportsman?
It has a Horton on it already. I did just put on VGs. I would love to have the sportsman..... Thanks for watching!
Looks like the sportsman is already installed. Please notice the rivet line and inspection plate cutouts on the leading edge.

Collin,
I flew just over 80 hrs. I would agree with you on saving as an A&P. Thanks for watching!
