Really appreciate this take. I have always had a hard time with the PoE community because it feels like everyone is focused on the destination and not the journey. People (streamers especially) seem to define winning as getting to the end as fast as possible; whereas I have always tried to define winning as having fun. I can't watch any poe streams atm because I do want to go in blind, and this community seems very antagonistic to the idea of not having the game/build solved before you even begin.
Good take. The streaming culture does this to most games sadly, before you know it everyone (even down to the bottom 1% of players) are using a top 1% build
You should have seen some of the build guides put out during necropolis ... They had entire documents detailing every single step of every piece of gear to craft that perfect coc inquis build Dan was running and heaps of other players too. Step by step instructions on how to deterministically craft each piece of gear and anything else the build needed. Was complete insanity. There was no game left at that point, you're just making a cake.
As organic PoE 1 player, that didn't use PoB all those years, I can tell that mathil is 100% right. Pls please learn the game base on the campaign and not from yt. For years nobody has discovered the tags-system and and the PoE 1 archetypes blueprint because they where focused on outside sources to learn the game. Playing PoE organically was the best gamming experience that I ever had and I hope PoE2 can replicate that experience for me again.
Big agree. I miss the 2000s era of RPGs where it felt like an actual box of mysteries and problems to solve. The good news is: you can continue to live in that world! That's the great thing about personal agency
totally agreed. I hope there won't be pob for poe2 either. once i found myself pobbing more than playing the actual game I quickly realized how boring it was trivializing every build before you even killed hillock. after that I only used it for eyeballing my skill tree, which lead to more free time dedicated towards mapping and thus actually understanding the builds through playing rather than simulating numbers.
I have felt the same way about a lot of games. Its easy to get lost in the sauce and try to be the "first" to do something cool in a game or have all the right knowledge and strategies for the endgame, but we havent even gotten our first playthrough yet. I love going in mostly blind to new games and trying to navigate them myself first. Thats exactly what i plan to do for poe2 EA launch. Thanks for the video, i think this is something a lot of people need to hear.
Nothing is better than the first time you play a game blind and solo it's always the way to go idgaf what annnyone says. I've played hundreds of games and sometimes with guides and coop on first play throughs and it always made the experience worst. Go in blind and go in solo take your time don't rely on anything but yourself it's truly the best way to experience a game. You experience and see things you wouldn't otherwise, and it makes you appreciate the game so much more.
That's a rather peculiar way to see the world. You are firm in your opinion, but everyone else's opinion is invalid and "you don't care what they say"? Well what if I disagree with you and don't care what you say? You have the final say in what everyone's personal preference should be?
@WelcomeBackMeHere oh idgaf what you think you play it however you like buddy. I said my case and that's it. I give you an example I played dark souls 1,2 solo blind and it was amazing 9/10 10/10 experiences. Then I played ds3 with friends cooping throughout the entire first play through and it was not as good. It wasn't a bad experience but I never fell in love with that game the same way. And objectively ds3 is far superior than the first two. But I didn't love it the same. Then I played Elden Ring solo and blind and it became one of my top 3 favorite games of all time. That's just one example I've had multiple others including bg3 coop which completely ruined the experience for me. And that game was incredible when I played it through solo. But I can't help but feel I was robbed of that raw experience trying to run it with friends initially.
I've kept up minimally, but I did watch the live stream with all the new reveals. All I know is that i'm going to try everything over time. The game looks FANTASTIC. And i'm sure i'll enjoy it as much as i've enjoyed PoE 1.
Yes that's my plan going blind and try some themed build that will probably suck! My ideas so far: D&D party minions - Warrior, Mage, Cleric skeletons Helldivers mercenary - just shoot things with gun and artillery Tracer - Chronomancer with crossbow to simulate a gun maybe?
Picking my starting class purely based on the vibes and class fantasy as presented by the artwork. Based gaming take Mathil. Also the first time my mom and brother will be playing Poe so very excited to bumble about with them.
I agree. I didn't even watch the most recent announcement video. The only things I'm going to look up before hand is skill tree and classes to get a general feel for what I want to play.
Absolutely agreed! I watch some of the interviews with the devs because I enjoy the enthusiasm they talk with and the insights and tit bits of things they do or happened during development. Otherwise I try not to retain too much gameplay details. But in a way it would've really been awesome to go fully blind for this release, so I also have some regrets about having seen the big announcement there. Definitely not looking up any in depth stuff and any other interviews until release, it'll be such a wonder to explore the game and try out stuff!
thanks mathil for fighting my inner demons for me, they tell me to spoil myself as much as possible because i just cant wait to finally play poe2, stay disciplined soldiers not even 2 more weeks lets go
I'll 100% follow in your footsteps. This is such a great game to try and optimize the fun out of it even before it releases. The best part about PoE (1) was slowly learning and becoming a true godslayer. I definitely want to have my share of exploration, fail and discovery in PoE 2, because it looks like such a passion project!
I’m watching most of Jonathan’s interview not to know more of the game but just to hear the guy talks. It’s really refreshing to hear a game dev gets excited to talk about his game. On the other side, I’m worried about some content creators that are already planning on making beginner’s guide on how to min/max even the early stages of the game.
Yup the Discord server i am in is completely buzzing with people trying to piece togheter the perfect build scrapping every scrap of youtube reveals and twitter posts for info. its exhausting and i muted the server until PoE 2 is out for at least 2 weeks... people forgot how to have fun discovering things and want everything solved immediatly. its kinda sad but hey if they enjoy it /shrug
There are so many creators right now trying to profit from the hype lol. Looking forward to your trusty builds to just have fun after a few weeks. But the first two months will be just me trying stuff out.
when I first played PoE in 2013 I made a shadow cause that sounded edgy then used viper strike, dual strike, double strike and flicker strike and tried to convince myself they were all situational. Looks like that naive approach will be way better in PoE2-
Well said. I couldn't agree more. I am so excited to discover new things and I am staying away from Reddit and other like-forums to hopefully fully immerse myself and try things out on my own. Loving the nearly clean slate we get in a game that will already feel very familiar for the most of us.
im with ya! Looking forward to enjoying the magical unknown exploration period. I've already ignored a handful of videos from those trying to deep dive it pre release.
Still to this day the only Poe streamer with his ideas on the right place, main reason we play these games is for fun, not point in spoiling that before we even get a chance to play the game.
Agreed. I will take my time. Explore. Enjoy what the game has to offer. I will avoid "BIG NEW BEST BUILD EVER, 200 GCP/H" garbage right from the start. I want to figure the game out myself. The most fun I ever had in PoE 1 was figuring out builds myself. I already tried to avoid campaign spoilers as much as possible. If Act 1-3 takes me 30+h to finish, so be it. You can only do something for the first time -once.
This is 100% the video that everyone should listen to before launch. All the nerds looking at wannabe build guides and build theorycrafting are just robbing their futures selves of fun. Touch grass until Dec 6th, login blind and let yourself have a little bit of fun before you let other people on the internet tell you how you're "supposed" to play the game
Definitely the first rule is to have fun. I also think that the game will have lots of broken stuff in it, and that the standards of a good build are gonna be much lower than what they are in 2024's PoE 1. Experimentation is encouraged, and even if you first build sucks, there's gonna be 11 other classes to test out.
I’ve just got to say, your hair looks great in this video. Also, you are so right. I don’t plan on watching any guides for my first character for that reason.
i already have 2 build ideas lined up from the bits and pieces we have gotten. both of them are highly experimental and have a high chance of being absolutely terrible but im going in!
Lovely vision/reminder, thanks. My rephrasing take: play PoB2 when it'll come out if you want but, in the meantime, do try to enjoy what PoE2 offers for what IT is :)
I mostly agree but I think some knowledge is recommended. Like having zero idea what the ascendancies are would cause people to feel like they made the wrong decision if they got past their first trial and neither ascendancy sounded like fun to them. There is more build defining stuff here like ascendancies than we had when POE first launched and that should be considered.
Well ya know, you gotta suit yourself. I do enjoy the teasers and the discourse around PoE2 coming out, I find it hype. I feel like it is silly trying to "solve" the game for now, there just is no enough info for that, not nearly. Same with giving definitive judgement on the reveals. But its fun to me to hype out on what's coming.
I am very much looking forward to the sequel. It was really tough trying to get into POE later in the games life without having to do a lot of research. Coming into the newer game on the ground floor will be great.
True and real. I want fun out of this game, a little adventure and a chance to explore, discover and learn things from the bottom up. Min-maxing will come in due time, I just wanna experience this game man.
Especially with everyone trying to make money by getting eyes on their content. It’s up to the players to just enjoy the ride without min maxing the fun out of it.
you guys have no idea how SLOWLY i'm about to go. listening to NPC dialogue, stopping to look at the ambient wildlife in zones, reading tooltips for everything. get your stopwatches ready because i'm about to set a record for longest time in Act 1.
I think the games I enjoyed the most and became most good at were the games that I played and tried to figure out for a long time without watching too many tutorials, just a few stuff here and there and maybe a basic guide to avoid wasting too much resources and time. The content and hype for this game before its launch is crazy though, to a point that people may get disappointed regardless of how good or not it is. I am waiting the next days for video titles about how PoE 2 will end the world hunger and bring peace to humanity. Let's relax a bit :P.
hopefully they have streamlined the coop experience so that is possible. POE1 campaign works fine coop, but the game has always been hit or miss with a lot of its mechanics. So will have to wait and see
My only plan is to do a frostfire caster, and I will figure details out on the fly. The more hours I have in poe, the more I turn to that kind of gameplay.
I already know what ill be doing between early and mid game. From mid-game im hoping I find a skill that absolutely enraptures me and I will shift my whole build. Im going witchhunter because it has culling, the chance to do 30% of their total health in the first hit. that alone just deletes 50% of the HP bar of bosses. You now only need to do half as much damage.
This is the video!! I know everyone is hyped and can't wait for these 2 long weeks, but just take a break and don't overwhelm yourself with POE2 content. It's as simple as that.
I'm toying with the idea of steering clear of Reddit, Twitch, and RUclips until December is over. I remember playing in PoE's closed beta where nobody knew shit and you'd just log in and play. We have the next decade to metagame PoE2 with guides and walkthroughs, but the first unadulterated playthrough is an opportunity for something magical that's hard to come by these days.
Back in my day, you could call a tips & tricks hotline... seriously. This is why people people suck in games now, they want everything spoon fed to them before the game is even out! Once upon a time, you used to actually "play" the game to learn and understand it.
Very much agree with this take. Personally I am thinking about not following guides anymore and just do my own stuff. Tried doing more of that and it has made gaming so much more fun. When i hit a brick wall I will look up possible solutions for it but I just wanna make some of my own fantasy builds
The first time I was introduced to POE1, I died 100500 times in Act 6(1) when I had my resistances lowered. And I didn't collect them the first time. It was really painful.
Totally agree. The only thing i watch is generally the livestream but ive watched it about 8 times now with different streamers n reactions. Other than that i dont really plan on finding other information. The livestream was more than enough for me and now, like everyone else, wish today was 6th december.
Strong agree. I fucking hate those youtubers that purposely make videos about leaks and the small details that I want to experience for myself blindly. I literally never asked to be spoiled on anything.
Based take. PoE2 will be the first time (over 2.5k-ish hours in PoE1, playing on/off since beta) where I will start with my own build. Compared to normal leaguestart, "getting as far as I can" is a solid goal for me instead of the usual "kill ubers". From the previews, I have a some ideas where to go. After all, without life on the tree it should be easier at least to survive, so that only leaves damage to be solved. Right? Right....?
I do like fun. I just can't wait to see all the skills on the tree so I can make my own builds that will probably be dumpster fires.... but hey, at least they will be MY dumpster fires!
I’d suggest everyone to start in HC until they beat the campaign, the only issue is once they beat the campaign-when they die in maps they’d literally have to start from scratch to get to maps in standard so I can’t recommend HC
Yeah its the fight between content creators riding the hype train algorithims to maximize money on their content and the players who want to experience it fresh. Im on the latter side, you only experience a game being new once in its life cycle. I wish I could go back and re-experience soulslikes with new eyes.
I've watched whatever GGG have revealed in the stream multiple times over, not so much out of wanting to analyse it, but just being hyped as hell. I do see people posting spoilers already about things that weren't shown by GGG to the public, which is disappointing, and surely will try my best to avoid them. Can't wait to bite into a fresh experience that has a very good chance of being very memorable.
on one hand yeah, on the other I'm sure most of the full time poe content creators are feeling the content drought on their wallet. with no new league for poe1 I'm sure their revenue has gone down significantly so they need to try and do what they can to make ends meet
I never played HC in PoE1, but recently I met a group I've been gaming with in other games, and we're planning to all be on discord in a few groups playing HC on release, it's going to be the best and worst time haha
HC is going to be terrible. The game is already designed to be a mid-core (between HC and SC) and your progress is already deleted on death, bosses reset to full hp, maps deleted etc. So seeing as they intentionally made it that middle ground, you can expect to die a LOT more often as the game is built around it much better. It's already giving you that punishing HC experience without deleting content you've already completed deathless
I think its absolutely pathetic how some people are seeking validation from being a little more efficient or faster at a video game thats not even PVP. Some folks are brain damaged from elitist mentality
honestly the poe community needs a cultural reset with the release of poe2. the pervasive idea that new players "need" to follow a build guide or any sort of guide is stupid and self-destructive. Even in poe1 a new player can intuitvely make a build that can finish the campaign, maybe break into yellow maps - the idea that a new player should be able to do pinnacles, ubers, 40/40 challenges on their first character is silly anyway. it's how we ended up with players who have hundreds or thousands of hours in the game but very little game knowledge, the laughable opinion that the game has no build variety, and an extremely toxic sense of entitlement vis-a-vis balance changes. And this bizzare insistence on treating poe like it's a competitve game when it's primarily a single player experience with a multiplayer economy that always ends up getting dominating by multiplayer farming groups and rmt syndicates anyway is a perspective that i hope stays behind in poe1 but i'm not holding my breath. /rant
Good take. I already have one friend what is just spamming my discord full of videos and screenshots on poe2 and is really eager to go blast it through. I just watched the trailers and teasers. Currently i'm just like you man, asking why rush it and trying to solve it already, as it will ruin the first time fun... It's getting exhausting and I'm not in a rush, when there are also other games to play through right now (like Stalker 2).
I enjoy seeing unique items teasers and little things like that, but I cannot get behind the people doing detailed "theorycrafting" and whatnot for "builds" in a game that isn't even out yet. I just want to play the game and enjoy the discovery man. To each their own, but I don't know why people want to ruin as much of the discovery process as possible for themselves.
You wont need to go SSF anymore for that experience. It's a new game, just don't care what other people are doing. The ingame currency exchange also removes the need to go outside of the game to trade, and it still encourages you to SSF craft your own gear but without limiting your progression due to RNG drops
Wanting to solve a game before release is like going to concerts only to film it on the phone. You just want to be there, you don't want the experience.

Good take. The streaming culture does this to most games sadly, before you know it everyone (even down to the bottom 1% of players) are using a top 1% build
The economy vultures.
The faster you become powerful, the more currency you make.
I think people should do whatever they want.
Mathil is one of the only real content creators around.
You only ever get that first time experience once. Cherish it. Revel in it. It's the moment you'll always look back on when talking about a game.
Finally, someone who reminds the true meaning of a videogame : discover at your own pace and have fun!
This 100% Really nice to see other people feeling the same way!
My ideas so far:
D&D party minions - Warrior, Mage, Cleric skeletons
Helldivers mercenary - just shoot things with gun and artillery
Tracer - Chronomancer with crossbow to simulate a gun maybe?
Picking my starting class purely based on the vibes and class fantasy as presented by the artwork. Based gaming take Mathil. Also the first time my mom and brother will be playing Poe so very excited to bumble about with them.
The minion gameplay in PoE 2 looks amazing and can't wait to enjoy every thing PoE 2 has to offer
Agree when the game comes out on the 6th, I'll probably have a no social media rule until I finish the campaign
thanks mathil for fighting my inner demons for me, they tell me to spoil myself as much as possible because i just cant wait to finally play poe2, stay disciplined soldiers not even 2 more weeks lets go
I'll 100% follow in your footsteps. This is such a great game to try and optimize the fun out of it even before it releases. The best part about PoE (1) was slowly learning and becoming a true godslayer. I definitely want to have my share of exploration, fail and discovery in PoE 2, because it looks like such a passion project!
completely agree, im gonna go as blind as i can too
Before launch:
"8 hours of POE 2 deep dives today boys"
On launch:
"blind playthrough! RAW DOG! SPOILERS=BAN"
Danny Kruger
But if that's fun to them
There are so many creators right now trying to profit from the hype lol. Looking forward to your trusty builds to just have fun after a few weeks. But the first two months will be just me trying stuff out.
That tricera guy
Yeah I've seen creators who havnt made any content on poe in general making videos on it like they know anything about poe
Completely agree. I'm not even looking much at the trailers. I want it to feel like the magic it felt with POE 1 all those years ago.
when I first played PoE in 2013 I made a shadow cause that sounded edgy then used viper strike, dual strike, double strike and flicker strike and tried to convince myself they were all situational.
But... But... But... My currency per hour!!! My fomo!!! I need to be like my favorite streamer!!!
Well said! I 100% agree
We need to enjoy games more by going in it blind and discover everything ourselves.
This is why we watch you man. Good takes!
It's absolutely the best way to play games!
you guys have no idea how SLOWLY i'm about to go. listening to NPC dialogue, stopping to look at the ambient wildlife in zones, reading tooltips for everything. get your stopwatches ready because i'm about to set a record for longest time in Act 1.
Couldn't agree more, Mathil ✌️
*proceeds to the next 4 hour long mercenary gameplay video*
I think the games I enjoyed the most and became most good at were the games that I played and tried to figure out for a long time without watching too many tutorials, just a few stuff here and there and maybe a basic guide to avoid wasting too much resources and time. The content and hype for this game before its launch is crazy though, to a point that people may get disappointed regardless of how good or not it is. I am waiting the next days for video titles about how PoE 2 will end the world hunger and bring peace to humanity. Let's relax a bit :P.
Hit the nail on the head, I'm avoiding spoilers like the plague.
You only get 1 first playthrough!
True dat man. People saying things are OP and insane and just - HAVE FUN. Its a brand new game, just HAVE FUN.
that is indeed an important thing to point out these days! JUST HAVE FUN!
For me personally researching and "discussing" different stuff before release is part of the fun. And most of our theories will be wrong anyways 🙂
I absolutely want to go in blind. Part of the fun is figuring things out. Learning bosses, mechanics etc the hard way
Planning on going in with 3 friends and cooping the campaign. Mage, tank, ranger, probably a necromancer. Gonna be having a blast.
hopefully they have streamlined the coop experience so that is possible. POE1 campaign works fine coop, but the game has always been hit or miss with a lot of its mechanics. So will have to wait and see
My only plan is to do a frostfire caster, and I will figure details out on the fly. The more hours I have in poe, the more I turn to that kind of gameplay.
I feel the same way, its exciting with a new game and taking it slow and savour on the "newness" of poe2 is going to be my approach aswell.
I will love playing the first league/leagues. Just playing whatever the hell seems fun, before everything figure out what is best and meta.
Im actually excited about playing without having some kind of build guide, the discovery process in poe is unmatched
Man speaking some truths, I legit wont let people spoil me, I want to go back.
Agreed. Only thing I want more of is the rest of the ascendancy nodes to figure out what I want to play.
I'm toying with the idea of steering clear of Reddit, Twitch, and RUclips until December is over. I remember playing in PoE's closed beta where nobody knew shit and you'd just log in and play. We have the next decade to metagame PoE2 with guides and walkthroughs, but the first unadulterated playthrough is an opportunity for something magical that's hard to come by these days.
if Mathil tells me to calm down, i should. Thanks for the reminder bud, take care and see you there when we get there!
I think the only thing I want spoiled really is ascendancy, but I think you're right imma try them all anyways! Love your content!
Oldge take
Already theorycrafted and minmaxxed every detail
The grinding never stops. The baiting stays strong
We can only have one first playthrough. Make it count, Exiles!
Right? Right....?
It's been hard to keep myself in the dark but also be part of the hype train.
Its so sad how on these days, this type of videos are legit needed lol
on one hand yeah, on the other I'm sure most of the full time poe content creators are feeling the content drought on their wallet. with no new league for poe1 I'm sure their revenue has gone down significantly so they need to try and do what they can to make ends meet
Imagine not able to comprehend different people have different playstyle. What a retarded take
I never played HC in PoE1, but recently I met a group I've been gaming with in other games, and we're planning to all be on discord in a few groups playing HC on release, it's going to be the best and worst time haha
Agree with mathil on this one ive been avoiding poe youtubers spoiling everything blind playthru is the way
I think its absolutely pathetic how some people are seeking validation from being a little more efficient or faster at a video game thats not even PVP.
/rant
problem is, white and yellow maps are boring. hence the, "you should follow a build guide"
True and real, have fun as well. It's going to be a blast seing all the cool new shit in person.
But i cant stop watching PoE 2 interviews. Im so excited i need something to keep me occupied. AAAAAAAAH
I will be going deadeye, taking all the projectile and attack speed notes, all I want to do is fill the screen with arrows.
Probably will start SSF for the first time. I realized meticulously following a guide was taking most of the game out of the game.
You wont need to go SSF anymore for that experience. It's a new game, just don't care what other people are doing. The ingame currency exchange also removes the need to go outside of the game to trade, and it still encourages you to SSF craft your own gear but without limiting your progression due to RNG drops
Love the message, more people gotta take the idea on to not spoil themselves.
Wanting to solve a game before release is like going to concerts only to film it on the phone. You just want to be there, you don't want the experience.
