A tip to save some money when visiting Amsterdam: the public transport system is amazing, so it's really doable to find a hotel in a town or city outside of Amsterdam and then travel there. For example: Haarlem (15 minutes by train) or Utrecht (20 minutes by train). Bonus: those cities are worth visiting in their own right, and not as overrun by tourists as Amsterdam.

You did a great job covering a lot of ground. You really didnt miss too much. Honestly the Rijksmuseum is a bit better than Van Gogh. The best thing about Van Gogh museum is not the art but the story you learn about him and his brother and his death. You did it right, frites, traditional food, beer. If you go again recommend a canal ride, Febo, and free ferry to Noord behind Centraal Station. Prost! Cheers!

Well made video and you are a nice couple!
But if you do come again, don't go where everybody tells you to go. There are so many more nice things to see without a line in front. Just go where the regular Dutch go. Buy your Stroopwafel at the Albert Heijn grocery. But even better: try to visit Utrecht, Haarlem, Delft or Leiden. Those are smaller cities (a little) less tourists and cheaper. Or go (by train) to the more eastern (and also much older) cities in the eastern part of the Netherlands, like Den Bosch, Nijmegen, Arnhem, Zutphen, Deventer, Zwolle or Groningen. I'm sure you will appreciate those places even more. And of course: rent a bike to explore or even make a bicycle day trip from one city to another.

But don't spoil in ridiculous long line fries. This are not the best maybe but go to the Albert Cuyp market. And you can get all the food for normal prices.

In the past people had to pay taxes which were decided by the size of the house, how bigger (wider) their house was how more they had to pay, so what they did is building it higher. Only rich people could afford a wide house. So when you see a very small house, you know the owner wasn't rich, if it was a wide house, the owner had more then enough money. ;)

These green parrots are all over the Randstad (Amsterdam is part of the bigger Randstad area: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag and Utrecht. The Randstad is the biggest megalopolis of Europe and it is the economical heart of The Netherlands, where the most Dutch citizens live). Also here in Utrecht. The winters aren't that harsh anymore so it is a good climate for them. The historical centre of Utrecht is older than the Amsterdam city center, and the Dom Tower in Utrecht is over 600 years old.

At the time it was built (second half of the 17th century) as the new Amsterdam city hall, it was the largest and most opulent non-religeous building in Europe. It became a royal palace only in the 19th century (after Napoleon put his brother Lodewijk Napoleon in the newly created throne of the short-lived Kingdom of Holland in the 1790's). Before that, the Netherlands was a republic for over two and a half centuries (the Dutch Republic)

That's what many French say about Paris, many Brits about London, many Germans about Berlin. It's the price these kind of popular tourist destinations all have to pay. That "most" Dutch people don't like Amsterdam is a meaningless remark, because no one can know that, and I doubt it's true. Many of the people you see in Amsterdam are visitors from the rest of the country; Amsterdam is also a popular destination for people from other parts of the Netherlands.

Actually it isn't popular at all, we Dutch do not like the place at all, It stinks, people are often rude, only speak their own hard to understand dialect, it is dangerous, it is full of tourists...

Amsterdam is very popular. It is a BEAUTIFULL city with loads of architecture and culture, thousands of shops restaurants and cafés, parks, canals, etc. etc. Only a small group of people from the rural provinces and other cities are envious of Amsterdam's succes with tourists.

If you don't understand the local "dialect" of Amsterdam (which doesn't exist), *@SideWalkAstronomyNetherlands*, you really should make an appointment with an ear, nose and throat specialist. I suppose you mean with "dialect" the prononcation of people like Johann Cruyff or André Hazes (very popular singer, who died some years ago) who both spoke with an Amsterdam "accent", and whose Dutch everyone in this country (with the possible exception of you) understood perfectly well.

I do like my hometown in Brabant, but I think Amsterdam is a great place. There is perhaps a bit overkill of tourism but the buildings, Amsterdam school, the punk history the graffiti era in the eighties, the local language. I Love it

Like you said, it's full of tourists and also house prices are sky high over there. So it's popular among tourists and citizens. By what metric is it not popular? It's the biggest city so it's also likely to have the most detractors. But by that logic Taylor swift isn't a popular artist because a bunch of republicans don't like her.

Amsterdam is a tourist trap, especially the city centre.
And even as a foreigner you should be able to tell it is. Everyone speaks English. In hoe many Dutch towns do you think English is the primary language?
There is a place in Amsterdam where they sell stroopwafels for €15 per stroopwafel. How many Dutch people do you think would pay that?
A couple of years ago I went there with school to visit some museums and a simple hot chocolate milk was €5. That is double the normal price for cafés! Sports clubs will proboubly charge only €1 or so, maybe €1,50 because of inflation.
    Stelletje afzetters daar!

Yep, en weer een boze en verongelijkte "Hollander" in de kleinste en domste betekenis van het woord, die schijt op zijn eigen hoofdstad en zijn eigen land bezoedelt. Nee. Amsterdam is GEEN "tourist trap".

Was in Amsterdam with some foreign visitors last week and it was still pretty affordable tbh. Like 3-4€ for a fresh stroopwafel at Albert Cuyp and 3€ for a pack that would be about 2.30 in the supermarket. Drinks on terraces also weren't outrageously expensive, neither in De Pijp or the city center. But my guests did like Leiden more then Amsterdam.
