Subtle dynamics (yes, it is piano, not harpsichord!), crystal clarity. To me it feels quiet, light-hearted and emotionally smashing at the same time. Yuja's ability is all the more in evidence when the camera work is as good as it is here.
This performance is just magical! The best I've ever seen or heard of this little piece. The notes are played with such speed and precision and joy. Exceptional. Thanks for posting.
That was so beautiful. I love how Scarlatti is used as a "palate cleanser" in piano recitals and as an encore after a concerto, which I'm sure some people would take as a derogatory comment, but it's not. Scarlatti is wonderfully refreshing, cleansing, uplifting music.
@@nestatim1 It's funny that he predicted someone like you coming to spread their shit of nonsense over what he said, which was no more than compliments for Scarlatti's music.
Quite possibly my favourite piano rendition of a harpsichord sonata. Most pianists can't help but add dynamics where none were intended, instead of capturing one tone or mood and holding it throughout.
I must comment on this once again, 4-5 years after my original comment. Yuja is now a mature established superstar, which she may have been when I commented, but perhaps not quite yet officially, when this remarkable video was made. Yet this is superstar material. It is also atypical of Yuja's videos today. Her repertoire today may be more difficult and more diverse than a mere 3-minute Scarlatti sonata (!), but not superior in beauty of execution or video recording or emotional impact on Yours Truly. Jaw-droppingly fantastic and beautiful. Needs to go into the public domain, to be available forever. By the way, I found some time ago a longer recording of this Verbier concert, now lost to me, which contained a brief error, a bad note which she played near the beginning and must have been edited out in this version. I believe this editing was unfortunate for several reasons. The error actually refreshed my appreciation of how difficult a top concert pianist's job is to pull off perfectly, and how remarkable this performance is, just the same.
What means a bad note at the beginning ?? To me nothing ! She might play some more and her performance as a whole would sound still fantastically, I think !!
The best version is from Walter Carlos' Well-Tempered Synthesizer from 1969. You want precision and clarity and beautiful tone colors then this one below is it: ruclips.net/video/wt6b4YF_YWg/видео.html
I cannot fathom the superhuman fine motor skills of this woman. I know they have to be developed, but this is mind boggling. Horowitz, loved Scarlatti and recorded a great many of his sonatas. I hope Yuja follows in his footsteps.
WJE37FCSM That's where we are in the often published nonsense opinion "strength" and "only men can play certain music well" It requires an enormous power in the fingers - not to hammer on the keys, but to have such a fine and subtle control of dynamics especially wher faster passages have to be played piano or pianissimo and still with extremely fine tuned dynamics. And Yuja Wang has this power, more than most pianists except the exceptional great. And she uses that to give the Scarlatty this light hearted but nevertheless "important" (I'm not a native English speaker, so this may not come over as I'd like) and well - dosed emotional mood and pastel colour. A great interpretation (at least in my humble opinion)
Pogorelich. Afaik Pogorelich did not record K. 455. If he had, it would have been more musical and creative than Wangs performance, which is good but in no way special.
Darren Matias Because she not only is a shinig person, she also worked thousands and thousands of hours hard and disciplined and she loves the Steinway (and the Steinway is fully in love with her :) ) Now she has such overwhelming technical skills, that the music streams out of her without any obstacles between her will and the piano .) And her will? It's simply great, because her musicality is at the same level as her technique and, to add another benefit - she is an incredible natural young woman and, instead of using the piano as a tool to express and show herself she simply adopted the Steinway as an extension of her body :D Are you surprised that I - of an age of over 70 and a devote fan of Martha Argerich whom I have heard and seen long a go for the first time, when she was young and whome I still love passionate - also fell in love with Yuja Wang? (their magnificent gifts and their personalities, totally different, but equally overwhelming)
I should add that I also like Horowitz's playing of this piece very much. I'm sure Yuja, who greatly admires Horowitz, took his playing of this piece as an inspiration for her marvelous interpretation.
Great shots from 1:48 showing her extraordinary dexterity from underneath. I can barely type after seeing that, feels like two frozen stumps at the end of my arms...
That's called an appoggiatura and it's a common ornament in baroque music. Some performers like to add more ornaments on the second repeat such as trills and stuff. Hope that helps!
I LOVE this. She is brilliant and one of the best Scarlatti players I heard. What is it with these Far Easters, they sure can play western classics. More pls
Outstanding rendition by Yuja but do not forget that Domenico Scalatti is the original composer. Wonder what it would be like to have heard him in concert in person 250 yrs ago.
Harpsichords didnt have double escapement so i dont know if these very fast tempi were possiblle 1755 . i wonder if Bach ever knew of the existence of this brilliant music in spain or any spanish music at all. Those of you born before 1970's hae no idea how difficult it was to order or find even which publisher had music . Contmep music was always hard to find and sooo expensive ! She is a true artis .Inimitable she gives us suchcharm here. Yuja is something. LangLang i think is our Horowitz . Only he knws how to get certain sounds, colors and textures or onl he and few others can. Fazil Say is a genius. world is more full of extraordinary awds and goddesss than ever before. Some could wipe Hofmann and Godowsky off the stage but none could make the sounds .Hear Godowsky in his schubert transcriptions noone has ever made a piano sing and float and swim in tone like that. Can you imagine if he even left us the smallest bit of Ravel ? !!! His debussy I think we have . Not good I think . I havent heard it in decades ! Slenczeska kicking and making very good music at 94 !!!
This piece should be played on harpsichord, mechanical flaws and all.. I believe it was written for harpsichord, correct me if I'm wrong, and should be played exclusively on harpsichord. If Liszt's music was played on harpsichord, the music world would have a revolution, yet this non period instrument is used constantly and nobody so much as raises an arm hair in revolt
exactly at 1:24, where the notes shortly stumble(long note in the score) and take a break before the next part starts. I dont think its bad, Ive only considered if its a failure or not.

Aside from being very light and airy and cleanly articulated, she really captures the spirit of Scarlatti. Very nice.
What is that spirit? Do tell.

EASYTIGER10 My compliments for that "palate cleanser" image.
Reducing Scarlatti to that is stupid. Stupid moron that cannot enjoy music for what it is and always has to use intellectual BS.

Also work as an intermediary work between two romantic big works example Beethoven late sonata/Scarlatti selection/some Liszt work
Best piano version of this! Left hand control is magnificent
Indeed, still balanced so magnificently well! The best ever !
Like a little bird flying among beautiful flowers.

It's so classical, it almost feels like Mozart, and the baroque corners really reflect Scarlatti's Genius.
This is from another planet compared to Mozart.
This is the best recording of this wonderful sonata. Orion Weiss's is very good, but I think Yuja Wang's precision and clarity are it for me.
I agree, because I don't know any better interpretation !
Horowitz also did a great job with this one. As always

I like Scott Ross's on the harpsichord.
Extraordinary! Talk about artistry. I can't imagine Scarlatti being played better. Yuja is in rarefied air as a pianist.
Awesome. And very controlled.
I have to say as I watch this performance from time to time it just about becomes a spiritual experience. Talent on loan from God.
Phenomenal.

Not an issue. She is leaning into the conflict similarly to when she lengthens the trill at 2:29
