He seems like a great Step Dad. He cares enough to scope out the scene for a daughter he lives as much as his very own. Hopefully, the girls school will give her a free train or bus pass so she can travel to and back for free!

The regional rail Trenton line stops at Bridesburg and Tacony and goes to three stops in Center City. It usually costs more than the 'el, and you need to have your ticket/card ahead of time, but there's a "nicer class" of passengers.

Working at the Philly Bulletin graveyard shift, 10 Pm to 4 AM, in the art department in 1969, I would take the EL from Bridge and Pratt to 46th Market. The weekends were the sketchiest and got worse the closer you got to the Bulletin stop. I have old movie film (1974) of an EL ride I took to Center City, when i visited my cousin who ran four soft pretzel stands. He let me run one for awhile, what a blast, great way to meet chicks. Film starts at Frankford, all the way to the subway. One of these days if I ever find a projector I will upload.

One tip: she has to make a deal with her folks when she leaves her home everyday! She's got to promise to be alert. No loud music in her earpods. No getting wrapped up in her phone messages when she finds a seat. Eyes and ears open when she's in public! Always! To be AWARE is to be ALIVE! Day or night!

Every family, child and situation is different. My daughter rides a train through funky neighborhoods and I worry, but this is how she acquires street smarts. (When the train stops running and people have to leave the station to take a shuttle bus there are usually crowds)
I was a Boy Scout leader and active parent in the Girl Scouts, and the kids who had experienced the city's bad parts were generally more capable, knowledgeable and aware than others. This is just one personal experience, but I always remember when we took some Girl and Boy Scouts to a museum and there was a crazy homeless guy there. The experienced kids avoided him and the other kids stood paralyzed until an adult led them past.
But, every family should decide for themselves.

I keep adding comments. Sorry. I grew up in Manhattan. I traveled by bus and train most of my life. People who are not used to the NYC five boroughs, are often overwhelmed by the Transit system. To know how to mauever and navigate within the Subway system properly should be mentioned on resumes! That is quite a skill!

I eork a couple of blocks away from the 34th Street stop of the MFL. One afternoon at rush hour someone in the station stuck a needle in their arm and threw it at my feet. I do not think they were giving themselves insulin. There is NO law enforcement on the MFL. People smoke all kind of things on the trains without intervention from authorities. I appreciate this and all of your videos and wish your daughter success and safety in her travels to school. The MFL is not just bad in Kensington.

I only take the El from 69th to 15th (so the other end of the line), but I see that each and every time I take the El (which, in my case, is not weekday rush hour but usually post-dinner time on a weekend). Almost always smoking on the train, etc. It scares me, as an older guy. I can only imagine how a young teenage girl would feel ...
