- in this adventure we explore an abandoned Tennessee coal mine for the very first time.

That's crazy.. You can see the exact seam of coal that was extracted.. Can you imagine those poor fellas in there with candles and picks and shovels and old wheelbarrows (probably steel wheels) hacking and breathing that dust in virtual darkness? Did what you had do back in the day. We got it so easy man.. You guys are stepping up your game... Great stuff...

@@ActionAdventureTwins I would think that with today's technology & power mining machines, that coal seam could be commercially viable to mine today.
@@lestergillis8171 you are probably right, however this site is in close proximity to a river and some houses, and I don't think coal mines are a big part of the economy there either; so I doubt it will be re opened.
Hey. Take it from an old coal miner, I worked the low coal seams in Harlan County Kentucky, 26 inch seams of coal setting Jack's behind the old Wilcox Miner's,
You kids are very lucky to come out of that place alive, Several places I watched you crawl into and how it didn't fall is beyond me, The sound of your voice could have caused a big fall, And believed me when it comes down your not getting a warning,

Really think twice before you ever go inside something like that again, Not counting Black Air that could be anywhere inside those mines, One Breath and your Dead.
Seriously say your Prayers if you ever go inside old works again.
As a miner, and specifically a scaler, that slab you walked under is a death trap. No support or roof bolts, and definitely separated.

I've heard you guys mention the tree roots more than once in caves & mines, believing you're near the surface. Don't let them fool you. Some roots can find their way through the cracks DEEP into cave systems.
Its coal too experience but old mines aren't the place to be exploring, especially without the proper gas detectors. Black damp is no joke. Also being under unsupported roof. Awesome video but be safe please.

Wow that was extensive! Can you imagine belly crawling with a pickaxe for weeks just to get the coal out of that narrow seam? Would have been a rough way to make a living.
I found a coal mining pickaxe on my own property i live in a coal mining community. And yeah the ceiling is very low

Black damp is nothing to mess with, it's never safe to go into an old coal mine.
I had no idea what black damp was so I googled it and my mind is blown. That made this cave video that much more exciting to watch!!

Parts of the back of that mine (the roof) are hanging just hello from Lightning Ridge NSW Australia we mine opal here ,my humble comment that coal mine you explored even the vibrations of your voice making the commentary with those hanging roofs and sides a place sure I would explore but the first 30 feet from the portal told the story sorry to rain on the parade . enough said ....@ 2:30 that back (the roof) can ripple and gather as shown with rock falls as you move forward.I would have backed out right there as that footage adds new meaning and depth to the saying sketchy ground,may I add to that that you are in earthquake prone ground ,look around at the material on the floor warning sign .....23:30 that is what you saw at 2:30 its the roof on the ground ,just a thought another though many of those props on the video have 4-5 inches clearence from the roof they once supported that says to me ground movement under them not a good place 2 be .
Growing up in coal country our mountains are littered with coal mines ranging from 10 years old to probably 200 years old. It was just beat into our brains from an early age that you do NOT go Into an old mine lol. I’m not calling these guys stupid, they are obviously professionals on some level but it just sends my anxiety through the roof watching them crawl under that bad top. Stay safe guys, love the channel.

When I think of coal mining I think of men swinging pick axes, pushing ore carts and so on. Never envisioned men on their belly digging in two feet of space. Geez.
I also wonder why they left the coal seam so close the entrance untouched? I would think that would be the first to go.

@@ActionAdventureTwins yeah the eroded backfill at the entrance is always misleading to the rest of the mine. Where I live it’s to dangerous to properly explore coal mines. They’ve been recorded to be really dangerous.
Just shows how much dirt they mined to get such a small seam of coal
Where my ex worked one of the miners filmed when they were pillaring and the sound of the members snapping I mean huge timbers it was unreal. Would love for you to see. Such dangerous job but THEY LOVED THEIR JOBS 😊

Here On Vancouver Island Canada they had to have firemen inspect them every morning. Once an explosion in one of the mines the esplanade killed 150 miners 9 miners survived out of these the mayor and the mine instructor

I follow several other RUclips channels living in a ghost town and abandoned forgotten places.among others
Those two channels have been in mines that sadly have still got the miner's bodies still trapped inside.
One he got as far as the collapse they tried rescuing them but failed you could see the haphazard way the rescuers were shoring up the roof with timber trying to reach them.
But eventually giving up as it was to dangerous to carry on.
Second one living in a ghost town.
He owns the mine.
I believe on the two hundred level is were several miner's body's are still trapped.
He was trying to get to the two hundred level by a different method digging and blasting the side of the mountain to reach and recover the body's I believe.
Very sad.
@@Paul-pb3vq yeah but unfortunately in my case the mines went under the ocean making it impossible to recover the 3 trapped miners from blasting

Chuckled at the old man's story of MO miners going down south during the Civil War and not being happy with the small coal seams. Here in the Midwest, we have coal mines made up of massive spaces, supported by natural columns, that stretch underneath multiple rural towns. But also a problem with old mines subsiding, taking houses/buildings with them, because old coal mines are very unstable.
wow that is a crazy amount of coal! nothing like this Tennessee coal mine. it seems that most coal mines are quite unstable no matter the size of the seam
@@ActionAdventureTwins I've looked at old mine maps of my area and they're insane. It's practically one continuous massive space that stretches nearly 20 miles. A nearby school was built several years ago, but they filled the mine below with "grout" first. It got built because the mine under the original school had subsided. A few smaller mines under my hometown, but so far no subsidence. They're about 200 ft. down and can no longer be accessed.

I worked in underground coal mines for years. I thought 40" was low. These guys were mining 20" with a pick. I can't begin to imagine how miserable that must have been.
I was a black hat for 6 years in West Virginia. I loved being underground. That might look dangerous but there was only really one sketchy spot
Looks like a highwall mine where the machine goes underground while the operator is outside very dangerous going in there be safe

They we're on their sides with a short handled pickaxe. The coal seam was exactly as wide as they dug it out.
Roof scaling isn't a good sign. Plus Black Damp will drop you in your tracks.

About half of people killed in mines in the U.S. aren't miners but people exploring abandoned mines!!!!

Be careful with coal mines, the rocks tends to be softer compared to mineral mines and more likely to collapse.

How did you know that there wasn't gas in the mine?
We had oxygen meters, and this mine didn't have a thick enough coal seam to give off enough blackdamp to cause concerns.

so the earth was covered in giant trees, thats indisputable now and now we know the giant trees turned to coal and when the giant tree broke and the end that broke settled down father a slope or something that is why some of the coal seams dive deeper . see the branch at 8.21 - 8.22 it turned to coal that is what a branch looks like inside the tree

The fun and games would instantly stop if you heard a big rumble while you're deep inside the mine. Then comes I Rush of wind and dust down the shaft and you know you were doomed at that point. And if you know the worth of prayer you will say one at that point
I'm NOT a Miner, never have been, never will be, but even I can tell, that at the 02:15 part, where you are entering a section of what Miners call BAD ROOF. You should have turned around and left the Mine IMMEDIATELY. That roof came down......END OF STORY.
If you guys happen to get trapped, do you pay for your rescue, or do we taxpayers.
I don't think rescue goes after people who are trapped in abandoned mines, nor would we want them too.

@@ActionAdventureTwins You are mistaken. If rescue gets notice of someone trapped in a mine, they will rush to assist. However, they might be a little pissed afterwards.

You guys are crazy? There is nothing more dangerous than an abandoned coal mine. Ive got cloister phobia and cant watch anymore. My Dad died from a fall off coal.
To many safety sally's. Take some risks once in a while. Live a little, you might enjoy it.
