Bono's diatribe against the"same old tripe" is hilarious given that's what he's been knocking out for the last twenty years! The Hunters become the Hunted!
true i've been a fan since 82 and that charade in vegas really sums up where U2 are now,not seen this before would love to see the bit after it got cut off
Back then they were the two most exciting bands in the world and there's nothing out there now to compare with the way they could electrify an audience.
It’s 1983, U2 has just released War. The Joshua Tree and massive stadium concerts are years away. Jim Kerr says “U2 could become the best live band on earth”. That’s what I call vision.
Shit, I went to this concert when I was 19, from the UK on the train. How cool was that.
where in the UK you from Jackie, I'm in UK in Kent

U2 were very good.
the best bands in the world !!!
Both such great bands with interesting beginnings. U2 definitely came at this with more of a Punk / Post-Punk energy, whereas Simple Minds were the more avant garde at the time, with beginnings in underground music incorporating Berlin krautrock and synthesizers , and then a dark take on NewWave/New Romantic music. They achieved that ethereal quality in their music before U2 had enlisted Brian Eno. In many ways Simple Minds were the better musicians, but the raw energy of U2 and eventually the very focused songwriting amidst visual and poetic grandeur would win the day. They continued to evolve in interesting ways. I think U2 had an inner ambition and their commitment to each other made them strong. they were hellbent on breaking America and were obsessed with the idea. When Simple Minds broke America they did little with it. I don't think they really cared, nor did they connect. Time is an interesting unknown factor. I must say however, in 2018 when I compare both U2's and Simple Minds new albums this year...Songs of Experience and Walk Between Worlds, the Simple Minds album is much better. It's so focused. It sounds like the kind of album U2 wanted to make in some respects.
Simple Minds had every bit of that same post-punk energy with their original line-up plus everything else you listed. Once they lost their original drummer that post-punk rush was gone and they were never as good. On their last tour with him for Sons & Fascination they were frighteningly great. Check out their gig in the Ritz in NY in 81. U2 peaked live on the Unforgettable Fire tour.
Ok James! Will do. Many thanks!
ok Thanks!
