  • This video goes into the story of the song "Ticket to Ride" by The Beatles. John & Paul have given conflicting answers on what the lyrics really mean. One version is a lot less innocent than the other. This video explores these ideas and how the song was formed and became one of their best songs of all time.

As Ticket to Ride was heavy I think the first heavy song was Hold Me Tight on Meet the Beatles, the double up lead and bass guitar progression with the steel sound of the rhythm guitar.

You could describe EVERY ONE of their Hit Singles in the same way. Their Art, and their Mission, from the beginning was creating #1 HIT RECORDS. They made sure that there was something INNOVATIVE on each one, and they all sounded different from each other.
They were just a Great Band, that's all !

The song is about a girlfriend breaking up. For goodness sake.
I think I'm going to be sad
    I think it's today, yeah
The girl that's driving me mad is going away
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
    And she don't care
She said that living with me
    Was bringing her down, yeah
For she would never be free
    When I was around
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
    And she don't care
I don't know why she's riding so high
    She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
Before she gets to saying goodbye
    She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
I think I'm gonna be sad
    I think it's today, yeah
The girl that's drivin' me mad
    Is goin' away, yeah
Ah, she's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
    But she don't care
I don't know why she's ridin' so high
    She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
Before she gets to sayin' goodbye
    She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
She said that livin' with me
    Was bringin' her down
    Yeah
    She would never be free
    When I was around
Ah, she's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
    But she don't care
    My baby don't care
    My baby don't care
    My baby don't care
    My baby don't care
    My baby don't care

Yes, and her boy friend must have made a lot of money, thus she would not have had to worry about "things" in life. She would have married him, lived on a lot of money, thus, the money was her "ticket to ride" through life. Boy friend, girl friend song. She did not care about his money and his "ticket", she did not like his way of life so she left him... Kind of like the Eagles' song, "Lyin Eyes." But, in the Eagles' song, she chose money over happiness. We don't know the age difference in the Beatle's song, but in the Eagles' song, she is a lot younger than her "ticket to ride."

Another theory as to what TTR is "really" about is that it's Lennon getting in touch with the sadness he felt about his Mother Julia leaving him -first as a little boy and then later when she died. On the same album (HELP) you've also got Paul doing Yesterday which lyrically tracks much closer with HIS mother's death ('I said something wrong" = Paul on hearing his Mom died said "what will we do without her money?" (He loved her it was just all he got his grieving mind to focus on.).
Conciously these songs aren't about their Moms deaths -but unconsciously -???

I think those are great theories, honestly. The subconscious mind can do a lot. Thanks for the comment!

Well, what is "Ticket ti Ride" really about, then? Apart from fleeting references to Ryde on the Isle of Wight and prostitute's health checks this video says nothing about any deeper meaning of the song's lyrics. So where is the analysis? BTW, prostitutes needing health checks isn't a "rumour" but rather a routine requirement in Germany then and today.

I thought it was about a girl who thinks she's too good for him. "she's got a ticket to ride but she don't care".

The Beatles are very creative. They got inspired by old music pioneers. Regardless of grammar (She don't care) or just without barriers (Eight days a week), anything goes. About Ticket to ride, I don't think there's a hidden meaning. I believe it's straight forward. John Lennon comes out with whatever pops out from his mind. For example "Hard Day's Night" was written quite fast. Music is like Arts. If abstraction was not invented, we'll get stuck to traditional conservative paintings. Bottom line, there are no rules to creative expressions.

I think this interpretation is ridiculous. You have to read well outside the lines to come up with this clean prostitute idea. The lyrics aren't that deep. If you strip out all the repeated words, here's what it says: "I think I'm gonna be sad. I think it's today. The girl that's driving me mad is going away. She's got a ticket to ride, and she don't care. She said that living with me was bringing her down for she would never be free when I was around. I don't know why she's ridin' so high. She ought to think twice, she ought to do right by me before she gets to saying goodbye. My baby don't care." First of all, if this prostitute idea is correct, and she's driving him mad, why is he "sad" that she's got a ticket to ride? Shouldn't he be happy about it?

Lennon liked to play games. If someone said this or any of their songs had hidden meanings, he would have laughed and gone along with it just to play with people’s minds.
