Great video. Really appreciate your content. Couple of things: 1) Muses were the goddesses of literature and arts in general (not just music), but also the goddesses of science (or rather one of them was the goddess of astronomy). 2) with regards to the huge satyr penises, it's a general concept in greek mythology that huge genitalia means that someone is animalistic and simple (or stupid). If you ever get the chance to go to the archeological museum of Athens or the Acropolis museum you will notice that heroes like Hercules and Theseus are depicted with rather small genitalia. This is an emphasis that the hero or the civilised person is the thinking and doing one, not the one seeking earthly pleasures all the time.
wasn't that Pan with the goat on that statute and not a run of the mill satyr, and I believe that it was Silenus, the foster father of Dionysus whom Midas captured.
Surprised that fauns weren't mentioned in the vid at all. While the two were initially very distinct beings, Roman conflation blended them together, slowly giving them more goat traits than horse traits, and by the time they were done, satyrs were no more than fauns but perverted. A few statues in the vid can be considered some good examples of this, looking quite different from the pottery depictions. They went the way of the siren, reduced to a palette swap of another fantastic being. Sometimes they are even treated as a synonym. Quite sad really, their previous designs were odd and/or disturbing, but far more unique, and you're lucky to see a design that even slightly matches those older depictions nowadays.
We have a mythical creature here in the Philippines that's kinda like that head of a horse body of a man tail of a horse and feet. They take women marry them or just take them and also they live in nature. They are called tikbalang.
You failed you mention why satyrs were always males in art until late Greek or roman period suddenly , female satyrs began appearing in art . Anyone know why ??
16:29 - Why is there a vase under the horse hanging from it's penis? Are the satyrs collecting bodily fluids from the horses and what are they planning on doing with them? Also, are satyrs the representation of the inner self of civilized humans?
Some satyrs had human body except the tail as what that old picture shows so couldn't the people who are born today with a tail or extra vertebrae be related to these people.
Goat legs are also attested in the Classical period. I couldn't find a single example of them in pottery depictions, so they can't have been that common. Fauns, the Roman equivalent to Satyrs, definitely had goat legs.
i "usta" think satyrs were centaurs missing their forelegs until someone -- a cartoonist -- told me otherwise. as i recall, he drew himself as a satyr and me as... that's another story for another time.
Hello. You confuse satyrs with silene and fauns. these are three different nature beings. And, Silene are often drunk. See the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii. And the disciples of Bacchus, they're always drunk.
Love this video. Concise, extremely well researched, and utterly fascinating. Thank you
Excellent content. I really apreciate the news segment, even though I already knew those! XD congratulations!
What would you think about the news segment being a separate video that I do once a month?

Does a regular guy imitating the agility and sexual frenzy of satyr count as one?
N i c e
In your opening you referred to Satyrs as half man-half horse. In fact they are half man-half goat
This is a common misconception, Greek satyrs were actually half-man and half-horse!
Amazons! Hell yeah! Do it!
Your volume is low, hard to hear.
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated

as i recall, he drew himself as a satyr and me as... that's another story for another time.
You are right.
These satyrs and centaurs walk the before the great flood of Noah.
If it is all myths , why should anyone care about it ? Those people were chewing a lot of psychedelics back in Greece .
Spelled "Sa-ter" is greek for restlessness. It's where we get Saterday From.
Saturday is from the Roman, after the god Saturn.
