Great information. "Funny" story: We pulled a water well pump from an existing well that had stopped producing water. The pump was bad so we are going to install a new one. Part of our installation process involves heating the end of the drop pipe with a torch. When we put the torch to the end of the pipe flames started shooting out. We shone a light down the well and it was foaming and bubbling. What was once a functional water well was now useless and full of natural gas.

      Well, that's scary as hell!

@@offgridstyleprepper What's scarier is that we also use the torch over the bore hole to attach the well seal after we lower the drop pipe. If we hadn't discovered the gas beforehand we would have lit off the well. 🔥

A well has been on my list a long time. The only problem is the limestone ledge right under the property.

Yes, we have a similar issue. They had to go down over 100 feet. And the limestone makes the water start to smell funky so I have to treat it every 6 months or so.

I dunno I’d probably recommend most people live in a community. If things do fail where are you getting parts from? Are you going to buy a 2000$ pump and keep spares? The right community spreads this burden across many. The big blind spot most preppers have is the “store problem”. Sure you may be able to survive a little while but most people will eventually fail on their own. Post Soviet Russia is a great blueprint for how things reorganize

This is why I am working with Flojak to get a hand pump for the well. It looks like the handle of a bicycle tire pump, but there is a hose on one end of the handle. It will allow me to access water from my well even if the solar goes out. Or if the pump goes out. This thing is a very durable, but very simply constructed device, and utilizes PVC to pull the water up. So, it's an alternative to worrying about keeping spare parts, etc :)
