- Come along for the journey as I put together my indoor ham radio station room or " Ham Shack". I'll show you the basic parts you'll need and how to install your first outside antenna.
Rare Earth Magnets amzn.to/3mFbmcw
SO239 Bulkhead connectors amzn.to/3dMT19q
MFJ -849 200 watt SWR meter amzn.to/3mHExvF
Powerwerx 30 amp PS amzn.to/3a37xJg Наука
I think more people would get into Ham if they just watched your intro. Well done.
You rock. Wanna job as my marketing dude?
This is a little more advanced than I was looking for
I'm just getting started with setting up my first shack and I was looking for information on how to do the antenna and get it outside of the house. The idea to repurpose an old satellite hookup was AWESOME! I don't know that I would have thought of that. GREAT idea!
Great shack, beyond beginners but still pretty awesome. Thanks
Wild that you've got my tiny hometown and the surrounding ones in your patch collection
Been slowly building my shack since I got into the hobby. Came a long way since I got my ticket in November 2019.
The ham is all ways " on the leading edge" and I'm new to all as I took off to look after my famly. Wife and daughter passing. I'm back. And all is new. All ways looking for new things tks om.
I LOVED this video! Please make more like this one. 👍👍👍
Great video. Thank you for sharing and posting. 73.
I’m going to take my test Saturday I’ve been studying for a while now and I’m finally gonna take it. Been watching a lot of your videos maybe one day we will meet over radio
Hope to see a review of the bulkhead connectors once you have had a chance to run them for a while! Thanks for your videos.
Very good video thanks from Gary in the UK 🇬🇧 👏
Great video, Bob always enjoy your videos.
Good stuff man. Thanks for the job well done.
I'm motivated now.
Hi Bob - great starting video. I hate ladders also!! We miss you in Penryn. You are doing well getting the shack set up after the move. 73
carl
I miss you guys.
Y'know, there's something genuinely encouraging about hearing someone who is clearly more experienced and handier than I am exclaim, "I HATE LADDERS", because that's the part of this adventure I'm looking the LEAST forward to!
Team replay for the win!
Great show!
I have the diamond x50, great antenna.
This is a lot of good information. I’m so torn as to what’s next after handhelds - mobile used as the base station? The frustrating part is my vx6r is triband but many mobile stations are dual band so it’s really hard to find an all-in-one type solution. With technology progressing everywhere else in our lives, I’d think more mobile/base stations would have bigger, better touch screens and be refreshed more frequently than their 5-10 year cycles. Anyway, great video!
FROM GARY I LOVE YOUR GVIDEO S TANKS VERY MUCH GOOD Luck 👍
Bob, I was in Florida the same time you were. What happened to you = Happened to me. LOL... Just not enough time to Radio and family vacation. 73 & Proud you made it to the THIN BLUE FINISH LINE! dave KB9VZU
I think this is a little more for the beginner that has enough knowledge to be dangerous. I actually think you should do a mini series on Ham 101.
I like how you mention a base antenna but you didn't go into details, if they are using an HT do they get a tri band just to be covered if they only have a dual band in case they want a tri band HT later, also what about the connectors to the HT, they might not know they are not the same. There is a lot more to unpack for the truly "just got my ticket newbie HAM"
Love your channel, and love your shack. Good video
Thanks!
As much as I like my MFJ switching power supply, I've retired mine to secondary usage. I'm migrating to linear to help kill RFI, and although it isn't always a LOT of mitigation, with a low noise floor up here in rural nowhere, you can appreciate every bit you can get. What kind of noise floor in your neck of the woods, and do you ever have problems with two switchers?
And here I thought I was the only ham who hated ladders!
Excellent video as a new ham I find your videos very helpful, I just got my shack up and running this past weekend. And yeah I fucking hate ladders! 73 from K5LUZ!
I'm about 40yrs behind,nice set up K6UDA ,KM4LAD 73 👍☕️☕️✌️
What size drill bits are those? I'm a Tim Taylor when it comes to things like that. I'll be apt to miss and pop some wires or a strange location pipe.
Frikken awsome and funny ass video...." I hate ladders too, dude..." Keep up good work. 73's de Uncle Günter outa here 😂😂😂👍
I don’t know, but something tells me Bob doesn’t like ladders.. LOL. 😆 I enjoyed your video.
Nice................
I’m working towards my ham license I have a uv-5r that has the CB frequency’s programmed in and 2 ham repeaters but it’s set so I can’t transmit on them
I feel the same about ladders. I was getting vertigo just watching that segment.
What metal did you put in the radio can have a link i need that setup thanks 🙏
I just bought a crank up tower and need to get my ham license next.
Speaking of ladders.... it is safer to have your ladder flipped the other way, in case the hinge releases.
The way you are using it, it can collapse. Flipped the other way will stop a possible collapse.
6:57 It is an absolute necessity if you build your own antenna, and even if you don't, it is always convenient to have redundancy and not burn out your equipment.
What do you do for lightning protection? I’m very leery about putting an antenna on my house
I disconnect the coax.
It seems your MFJ -849 200 Watt Power Supply link is Broken or missing you might want to check it again Thanks
Hey Bob, so you like ladders then?? Sorry, couldn't resist. Nice clip to motivate the new Hams.
Another good video Bob. Jeremy KA7BIF wants to know when he gets his royalty check. :)
Check is in the mail.
In soon times only free news mediuh will be ham operations. We need more locals who have means to support Radio Free America.
I love your videos sirrrrr!!!!! I got a question: what is the purpose of getting all this expensive equipment for HF and make long distant contact when you can go DMR? Can you elaborate? Thanks
No wires, no internet. Just an antenna. I guess it’s the same question as why do you want to climb Mt Everest. Because you can.
@@K6UDA 🤣😂🤣🤣👍👍👍
I put up some stuff fired up the scanner and came to the conclusion that the ham radio bands are dead in my area...
Lookin good Bob! K7DFL
While drilling blindly through the wall... don't forget to pray to the HAM gods that u don't hit an electrical line... or worse, a water line.
Can I use an antenna inside? I live in an apartment building.
Absolutely. It won’t work as well as it would strung up outside but it will work.
@@K6UDA Thank you
How much do you have invested in the initial setup?
In my setup or as a general rule?
This is not a "how to build a shack for beginners" video. It's a video of a manchild talking about his radio toys.
😂😂😂
I should send you a patch from SAPol. (South Australia Police)
How does his wife not object to his pc backgrounds?
RG8 for VHF/UHF, and PL259 adapters, totally not recommended.. Use some decent coax for the high bands..
I use lmr400, but that’s just me. For a short run, there’s nothing wrong with RG8.
Did you say this was for beginners who just got their license??
Yeah, I believe that's what he said ? Looked more like an ego tour to me
Looks like you've done pretty good for yourself ,,, on a cop's salary ???
Too much rg58 and mfj 😜 but nicely in order.
Unfortunately I could only send FD patches
Same here ladders sucks
Lmao what is that intro?! 🤣🤣
maybe if you didn't use the ladder backwards?
For beginners?
This is to show us how to get in as a beginner? 20 grand later. :)
Beginners
1. Call CQ DX on a repeater.
2. Say, "The first personal here is (your name).
3. Break into an existing conversation by saying, "breaker, breaker."
4. Instead of actually laughing say, "hi hi."
5. Talk about yourself.
6. If no one is on the repeater just drop in your call because once they hear it is you they will be so excited to talk to you.
7. Brag about yourself, especially how you passed a test children as young as five have passed.
8. Do videos without substance by just aiming you camera at a rig and record contacts. (Do not copy K6UDA-his videos generally have substance).
Complain about traffic even though you are traffic.
LMAO
When you hear a conversation ongoing, keep interrupting by saying; "Is the frequency in use?"
I guess I’m less than a beginner. 5 minutes in i was completely lost in your acronyms and radio jargon.
Ke4hpq 73’s
Thank you for your tech videos but I hope you would accept my suggestion not to cram the images of women and the Barbie doll into your tech topics to give more value to what you post. Thanks and good luck.
For a beginner, I’m lost haha..
In the UK, when you start, dont bother with 2M nets, they are full of old men who hate anything new. Just call and dont bother with nets!
SO, YOU HATE LADDERS
Ao not beginner. Cool stuff but it is all beyond me.
And learn to operate a radio without the assistance of a computer.
This seems like a very expensive hobby
"For beginners" (shows $1,000 radio)
Aah yes. How many folks go out and buy a new iPhone or Samsung every year or two. Even the ones on those incredibly tight budgets.
this is wayyyy ahead of the beginner...good video if you have years of experiance ,,not for the novice,,change the heading
wow this is a mistitled video lol. this is just you showing off your stuff. I went into this thinking you were going to show how to build a ham radio. You did not do that lmfao
Well, shoot, sorta click bait headline. This is essentially a brag session showing off your station - it shares precious little information about what goes into building a basic starter station. You itemize your gear, but fail to explain or discuss the many considerations involved in selecting a rig, power supply, power meter, antenna, and other accessories. Perhaps you could shoot another video and stay on topic, explaining what is involved in building a station after getting the license. Oh, um , and by the way, I do not like ladders, either. Good luck. JT
Your title says this is for beginners. Are you kidding me. This video is way beyond a beginner. A room full of high-end gear is not how to start.
I hate these type of labeled videos. I think its, going to show me how to build a,new station. Nope.
RUclips Hamfest 2021: GREAT JOB GUYS (special disclaimer related to K6UDA below) .... I obtained my novice in 1986 and for most of the years between then and now have been an ARRL member and have held several calls, including American and VE7's as well as VK2's while living in Australia, as well as working for Icom for a period of time in Bellevue (Hi Ray, it's Jen the service advisor). I've seen a lot of ups and downs in our community in that time but I have to say, from the bottom of my heart thank you, thank you, thank you. As someone who was watching our community go silent key while the ARRL stood by doing little more than send us more junk mail to buy their junk I have to say that you all have done more in your few short years on RUclips than I saw the ARRL do in the almost 30 years I've had my license. When it comes to making Amateur radio cool and inviting to young hams, the ARRL has been a huge disappointment (in my opinion), happy to sit back and do little more than pretend to fight for our rights in DC while we continue to see our spectrum disappear to UPS and other companies... where were you ARRL? You sure weren't on RUclips making our hobby look cool like these wonderful examples of hams were/are. If they offered a stand alone subscription to QST, I would have cancelled my membership 10+ years ago, the mag is all they have left to give and when they recently came with a magazine targeted towards younger hams, it was obviously in response to how awesome you've all done to getting young people excited, a bit too little too late ARRL. Great job guys!!!!!! YOU all are what the ARRL should be, it's a real shame they still haven't done anything more than toss the occasional lab report on RUclips but where there's a vacuum, something will rush in, thank you all for filling that void for our next generation or radio amateurs. All that said, you all are shining examples for our community and great examples for our kids... OTHER THAN K6UDA! You sir are a shockingly poor example of how to respect woman, and a bad example to the young community the other members of this group strive to bring in. I do NOT want any child I know seeing your half naked bikini women and smart ass comments, bikini clad women are not props for your videos, all the work these guys do to help us, you in one half naked female smart ass think you're funny video blows.....Unless this groups motto is to only bring in new MALE hams, try to remember there are a lot of female young ladies that would be a great addition. Your attitude belongs in the Rugged Radio drinking ATV ripping up trails and leaving trash community, not the amateur radio community... please tone it back!!!!! Thank you all........ 73 KB6JEN/VE7OTH (formerly VE7JOD, VK2WD)
Need your help Bob, you can bring your ladder. No really, I need your help. 73 de KD4HCT
