Hi Lauren! I’m sort of new to doing VA work but not really. I’ve been in the corporate world for 20+ years and have supported many managers and most of them being remote bosses. So, I’m no stranger to virtual work. My question is, how does one try and transition into this line of work without their current employer discovering it? I still need the income from my current work but am looking to becoming a full time VA. How does one stay ‘incognito’ while slowly ramping up and building up a client base?
Hey mama! Great question. I would recommend looking at your HR and company policies to see if they require you to disclose any additional income that you are earning. You are probably not the first person to have this conversation! Many employees have "side hustles" to supplement their income -- whether that is income from a MLM, offering ride share services, etc, but still work their 9-5 job. Some employers require you to disclose the information this due to potential conflict of interest, and I would never want to encourage you to do something that could compromise your current position! This doesn't necessarily have to be a negative thing -- I disclosed my freelance work to my employer, and when I left a few months later, I was able to turn them into a paying client doing the exact same thing I was doing as a salaried employee!

Hey! What has your current approach been? The challenge with door to door sales is that you have no idea what their needs are related to their websites, if any! Have you tried networking groups online or in person? Or even job boards? Connecting with agency owners who subcontract this work? I would take a more targeted approach where you KNOW your time and energy is spent connecting with people who would either need your services or be able to refer you to someone who does.

Great day! I am Joel by the way, I am a breadwinner and a self supporting student at the same time. Due to inevitable financial crisis I worked in a BPO company while studying. I feel a great sense of pride in the knowledge of working while at the same time studying. However, Recently I got sick and was terminated, it frustrates me because i no longer have a job and our electric and water bill, went insanely high and i am supposed to pay for that since I no longer have a father and only got my mother, she owns a mini store but it is not enough to pay for my expenses while im studying. Moving forward, I heard about my friend working as a free lancer or VA and luckily got a client. I am hoping that any one here helps me to become a VA. Sadly, I don’t have laptop which is also essential for my research, thats why im trying my luck here. Rest assured, I will do my very best, im coachable as well and is willing to go above and beyond to achieve certain goals for ky prospective client. Btw, I have also studied various videos about whats does VA do.

Great question! A freelancer is an independent contractor, which is a W9 worker, not a W2 employee. As a virtual assistant (working from home) you could potentially be either a remote employee or a freelancer.
It definitely can be, especially if you treat freelancing like a job. If you focus on establishing your credibility and exposure, the work comes to you ;)
