  • What does homelessness look like, and who does it effect? Martha Stone, the executive director of a 96-bed homeless shelter, shares the stories of a few residents of the shelter, and shares how we can all end the cycle of homelessness in our communities.
Martha Stone joined the staff of Cross Roads House, a 96 bed homeless shelter, in 2004 as the Development Director and was promoted to Executive Director in 2013. In her role as the development director she oversaw and executed a successful $5 million capital campaign to design and construct a new shelter facility. As the largest shelter in the NH Seacoast region, Cross Roads House provides emergency and transitional shelter and services for individual adults and families. Martha is responsible for overseeing shelter operations, programming, marketing, fundraising, and financial management of the non-profit organization.
Martha received her BA in Communications from Boston College. In early 2015, she completed eleven years of service as a school board member for the town of Greenland, NH where she resides with her husband and two children, both of whom are currently away at college. She can be contacted at martha@crossroadshouse.org.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I became homeless two days ago. I have been sleeping in my car. I was evicted from my apartment dued to the constant increases in rent. I lived at my residence for 18 yrs. I must say honestly that: "evictions lead to homelessness".And many dont have no place to go. I believe our country and its leaders have failed us and simply they dont care, because it is not them who are suffering. Homelessness is lonely, and cold. Within myself, I keep myself inspired, motivated and avoid from being discouraged. I only want to seek low- income housing, or a senior- citizen home.

I am sorry to hear this! What about the eviction moratorium? 18 years is a long time!!
Can you challenge any of this in court? Lease expired or m2m?
I left an apt about seven years ago because they served us all with a rent increase (no improvements). I figuratively said screw you and have been on a less than stable road ever since (got evicted twice in this timeframe where I have never been before).
The times now....you one OWNS, we are all vulnerable.....

It's true though sadly. Was homeless 2 years (with a still uncertain future) and spent most of it in a shelter where I met tons of others. Out of I dunno maybe 1 thousand of them 10 were on the working list and had a job. Most did have some kind of addiction too.
Not only that but the system works so that addicts get more help than those without drug problems. I couldn't qualify for cheaper housing because I wasn't as much "in need of help" as them.

I would like to comment about mental health. I became homeless withy son, and my sons dad, because we did not get along and mostly because he was not cooperating at all in our home.
I was not at all looking forward to being with strangers in a shelter, and was overwhelmed by everything happening, and had severe anxiety from a very hurtful and unhealthy relationship.
The shelter provided counseling, but only for what services you might need and they offered a therapist to listen to my problems every friday. They sessions were completely unproductive because all the counselor did was nod her head. I had to begin the conversation and make up what to say. She just told me: you got one hour....
I honestly felt so hurt by this experience, like I had no way to ever get anything resolved. All the heaviness in me. To this day I am homeless and my son is aswell

No. We do not need 2 well paid white women for every homeless person on the streets. Just give the money to the homeless person directly. This woman is a parasite and a middle man manipulating these peoples emotions to get more donations from which she cuts her own paycheck.
Nonprofits are a scam. The started under Ronald raegan’s deregulation as a way to hide huge sums of money and protect them from taxes. Harming society TWICE! The middle class has to pick up that slack when the actual wealth of the country is stashed in a charitable endowment.

All my belongings are scattered at various places Ive stayed and its that dreadful time again.

So long as homes are private property without a permanent public alternative, homelessness will never go away. Because no matter how well a person may be doing, a land owner can always refuse to sell. A landlord can refuse to lease. A lodging can always set their prices higher or claim some right to deny patronage.
The only homelessness that can be addressed is for people who have to cooperate to succeed. With compliance comes acceptance. Others following housing trends and greater market rates may not even realize they are perpetuating the attitudes of intentional discrimination.

sleeping in a shelter right now, working full time. using a storage unit as a makeshift (and expensive) closet. during the day, i walk. i eat at the soup kitchen for lunch and eat out for dinner (which is expensive but i have nowhere to store or refrigerate food). i don't have a car. i am a convicted felon (i was 17 and in possession of enough weed to be slapped with intent) and am working on getting my ged. i have no family to ask for help (they all have shunned me). i am 100% sober, i work out everyday, wake up at 3 am for work, and sleep only about 5 hours as they dont shut the lights off until 10 pm. the ONLY thing i have that keeps me going is my dream of a girlfriend who i get to spend my weekends with (she lives about 50 miles from me and makes the drive twice a weekend to pick me up and drop me off). i must say, that while homelessness is absolutely a problem, and maybe this is just here, but the majority of the men in my shelter do next to nothing to help themselves, and they treat the people who shelter and feed them so poorly it makes me sick. there needs to be some regulation and like intake process, and those things need to be made available everywhere.

It's awesome that you have this program. A lot of parts of this country do not have anything like this. People put more money and fundraising for animals than homeless people. It's so scary to be homeless, especially if you have a child/children. I think we need to have more programs like the one you help. Because I see more homeless people, and there are literally no shelters here in Medford, Oregon except a very small shelter and I guess they have to be out of there early and it's not for families. And people have to stand in line for hours just hoping to get in.

Homelessness is acceptable upon many reasons. Some it might be financial gain, freedom, and stability in reality. For me it was get out from around the people who were holding me down and burdening me to what I would never own (apartment). To escape the delusion of this, of me having my "owning" a place. When in reality I was giving away $600 or more every month. Just to be told months or years later, "get out you're evicted, or I'm moving." Just to go to another apartment and do the same thing for years again.
Not having to pay rent is very profitable especially when you can save money. And if you're not, it's very easy to start over next month in case you become broke.
I've know of alot of people, who cant eat comfortably or have the extra needs for their children or self. Or never own a home due to expensive rent.
$7,000 a year for the next 5 years. Will buy you a house with the accessories of washer, dryer etc.
Homelessness, homeless shelters would be beneficial especially for single individuals.
Just to note. I've seen people sleep on concrete cold floors in prison for 2 years or more. Without complaining and continued to survive. Yet when they are free from prison and find a employment. Then they cant do what they've learn in prison for financial gain. Instead for example, they go to work making $800 a month and pay over half for rent, utilities etc. And they're back to being broke. With giving more of their earnings to the people who never cared for them to be employed in the 1st place.
It's like asking the people (companies) for employment. In my case, they kept denying me. With a college degree (alumni). Yet, when you get some money, they want to now rent to you and consume your wealth. Yet, not hire you into stable employment. That's foolish, and unethical to do.
I dont like renting in a system that doesnt support me to be able to pay their rent and take care of m6self at the same time. One hand washes the other. But if the other hand isnt doing what its suppose to do. Then what?
Its even worse, to see criminals or dope boys follow the same methods, especially after being freed from prison. And understanding what hustling is. Not a good hustle if I'm giving my "illegal" earnings of $800.00. To the landlord that's charging $600. Now I'm hustling (working) for the landlord.
Once I understood that. I always tried ways to cut my rent in half or no more than $250. Even $250.00 is over the top. That's a driveway with a garage and fence around it. After 2 or 3 years of paying.
Rent is slavery. Especially for single individuals.
Homelessness is a great idea to put yourself as priority over everything. Find all year round warm city. And it makes it easier. Homelessness and homeless shelters is advantageous if you know what you're doing. Without getting negatively influenced by other people in society to bankrupt you or worse.
Try buying a mobile camper and live with a family member in their backyard. And pay the difference of what you couldn't pay in housing. And you keep the bulk load of your earnings is smarter.
    INTR....

Giving services is only stalling for time. To solve the problem, we need to change zoning and building codes so that there is some alternative between a $75,000 building code compliant house, and a cardboard box. We need legal, mass produced basic shelter pods that can be paid for by people of extremely limited income, to keep them from slipping into homelessness.

tomato Wherever they go will become a real drug infested ghetto. Your appreciation of technology is a millennia or two behind. Places like Hong Kong have stacking fiberglass cubicles that provide all immediate necessities and cost far less than an apartment, which at present we can not afford to provide.
But the underlying principle is affordable, user paid shelter. Government giveaways will just promote increased homelessness, as people stop supporting themselves and choose to live on the government dole. Like seagulls, who cease to fish or fly when provided with plentiful free food, many people cease to provide necessities for themselves when the nanny state provides it to them for free.
Your point of view increases the number of public supported homeless people, and does not decrease it.

Number 3 tip is that unfortunately you have to move around a lot and clean up after yourself. Don’t use a tent and keep a low profile so you have plausible deniability if the cops chase you off your squat. Number 4 tip. Pay attention to clean clothes and hygiene cause it will affect the way you are treated.

Watching this video I was surprised at how the presentation had me teetering between opposing thoughts and was unable to pin down exactly why. I have been homeless for very extended periods twice in my life, the first was from 14 to 21years old, and the second was 3.5 years that ended just last December, with a 30 year span between them and both were completely different from each other in every way. In this video it was the phrase "end the cycle of homelessness", which was not mentioned until the end of the video, that abruptly brought the tug of war between my thought to an end with a thud, by reminding me of the realities of homelessness as they are in the 21st century as I experienced them firsthand. While this isn't the forum to express my experience in detail, nor would it be fair for me to try to dissuade anyone from supporting this or any other facility program, but I feel it is fair to say that this presentation is virtually identical to those presented by similar facilities across North America. And for reasons that most people would never discover on their own without a great deal of effort and observation.
There are two powerful and distinctly different reasons why, under the current strategy here in North America, the Mission Statement of "ending the cycle of homelessness" can not and will not be achieved. The first is that the root causes of homelessness grow from deep within our society, they are different in almost ever case and therefore impossible to predict or eliminate. The second reason, again, lies deep with in our society. Capitalism. In the last 2 or 3 decade Homelessness has become an industry of its own that employs at least 2 people for every homeless person. In my city, that translates to about 3000 frontline jobs and about 10,000 jobs in total.
With that in mind, I would like to point out that this video, was merely a sales pitch formulated with facts ( yes, their budgets are primarily from private funds) and misrepresentations designed by media professionals to tug at your purse strings. For example, The 3 cases presented here represent around 5 out 100 homeless people in terms of their cause and circumstance. they were chosen for this presentation simple because they were success stories, and they were most likely to be associated in your mind with someone you know or love, a single mother who could be your daughter or sister, The 40 year vet suffering his late and final years, who could be your grandfather, father or brother. Neither were typical cases and were the easiest to reestablish housing for. None were representative of the "cycle of homelessness" referred to here. If they were, a city of a million people would have fewer than 200 cases at any given time depending on housing markets and funding.
I was so disturbed by just how identical this presentation was to others I have endured, participated in and even provided support to, That I've made the decision to document, by way of a blog, my experience with homelessness, the industry that depends on it and release the data I've gathered directly from that industry, and maybe try to offer ideas for more honest and effective strategies born from the streets, not the boardrooms. Most of the infrastructure and resources already exist, they just aren't utilized or distributed in effective, sensible or correct ways.
Homelessness has been around longer than, well, longer than we've had homes obviously. It will never go away, there are just too many variables that combine to create it. So when anyone, whether they depend on homelessness for a paycheck or not, talks about breaking the cycle or ending homelessness you can be sure they are either blindly naive, are being intentionally untruthful, or have never spent a day with out money in their pocket or a place to call home.
If you are truly interested in making a change or want to know why that hasn't happened already despite the obscene amount of money spent on this issue annually across North America, I will ensure my email address is viewable in my profile. I will let you know where and when the Blog is available. I will read each one so if you have specific questions relating to what I wrote here, or homelessness in general I will answer you back, eventually. I say eventually only because I have more than my personal share of medical and financial issues and they are my priority, so it might be an hour or a month. Proof that getting housing simply becomes a matter of exchanging one set of problems for a new and different set of problems, or even just adding them together.

I have been collecting gear ever since I was last homeless and now 20 plus years later i am using it all unfortunately. Being able to survive is something I have thankfully developed, and now I hope to get a miracle situation by using my head and by being resourceful. Its not easy out there nowadays!

No forests or trees where I live, it's a desert. Only coyotes, snakes and dirt here... Wild horses but it's illegal to do anything with them like riding or eating em lol.

Maybe I should look through the comments because the only way she described I can help is by serving in the kitchen & donating money. What if I want to do more?

All she says is true, i have for 10 years sleep in my car. It is illegal in my town to be caught will be arrested. Add exposed to the climate cold below temps 14 below twice 16 below once, i collect cans to pay for hotel stays. Jobs run out, th company downsizes or closed, the next do to instable employment makes it hard for the next job. Even the VA will not help.
I do not do drugs,. I use music to keep me going.

There are people who honestly deserve to be homeless but SO many people I just don't get how this country can let this happen. It should be illegal for the amount of tax payer money goes into the military when we are not at war. It's a total nightmare and I have PTSD over my experience. I have thankfully made it through but knowing all the people and parents and children who are still in that system or just starting... I just don't understand it. Most people can't get out of it. It will break the toughest of us
