  • John Maceri talks about an issue that is lingering across the US that unfortunately fails to be addressed on a daily basis. He reminds us that there is indeed something that can be done to help alleviate this issue and get our citizens off the streets.
John Maceri is the Executive Director of OPCC, a nonprofit social service agency based in Santa Monica. OPCC provides a wide variety of housing and services through its ten projects serving low-income and homeless youth, adults and families, battered women and their children, at-risk youth and people living with mental illness.
TEDxUCLA was organized by the UCLA Extension Visual Arts Department. visual.uclaextension.edu
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Your comparison of homeless people to stray animals gave me food for thought. We treat animals better than we treat people. I agree that we should house and offer services to the homeless. It's a more humane and less expensive alternative to what is currently done. In Orlando for instance, laws are put into place to harass and move the homeless out. Housing is way overpriced here which contributes to the homeless problem. What can I do as an individual to help?

It’s hard to put it all in comment here, but look into StrongTowns as well as NotJustBikes.
Basically, we need to stop building car-dependent cities. We need denser, mixed used housing (and much more of it, including “missing middle” and midrises, not just suburbs and a few downtown skyscrapers). Cities should be walkable, bikeable, and have reliable, connected, frequent public transit.
Vote and advocate for these policies to reduce the cost of housing, while also improving quality of life, saving money, and protecting the environment.
Of course, also vote for treatment and social support for those who have drug addiction or mental (or physical) health issues, whether they’re homeless or not.

Great talk! I'm writing a paper for my University right now about possible strategies for solving homelessness at a local level. Based on everything I've gathered it seems to me that the only way to make any meaningful progress is through fundamental change in our system, but I see very few people talking about this. We aren't going to solve homelessness with tax credits and bonding dollars we need real reform.

High cost of living can hit anyone so hard it'd be like someone just swung a bat at your head. I was homeless and didn't even smoke, drink, or get high, i had a 40 hr week job and even if i poured my entire check into my rent, it would still not cover it. That's a whole different story that's not my point...i remember growing up my father was a mere factory worker and we always had our rent and bills paid, and good wholesome food. Every once in a while he'd treat us to a movie or some chinese take out or go to the beach during the summer. I was never aware we were actually poor as all our basic necessities were always taken care of and all our relatives and friends lived under similar conditions. He was always happy and used to tell us that with technological progress and other advances, in the future everyone would live comfortably, better than what he could give us. That did not happen yet i love my father so much, i wish i could go back in time and relive those times...

I was homeless once upon a time, fortunately, I managed to extricate myself .
I've thought about this situation long and hard.
Over many years I've offered my home. I've made hot meals and would do whatever I was able to make that person comfortable.
Honestly I didn't have any successful outcomes . I hear that you may have welcome 1000 people to meet the 1 who is ready.
Good people mustn't get discouraged. It's complicated. They weren't ready for me but maybe they will ready for you.
Point everyone must make the effort.

If you've never been homeless then you don't know exactly how it sucks or how badly it sucks all you know is how it looks to you and you say aww damn that sucks. But until you've been homeless you've got absolutely no right to talk about how bad it is to be homeless. I was homeless for 10 years and although I've had my apartment for the last 13 it's taking me about 8 years to get used to not being homeless. Homelessness is more than just without a home it's a state of mind also. Once you become homeless it's virtually impossible to become on homeless. It's not impossible it's virtually impossible

    • @devilsatan2973
      @devilsatan2973 2 года назад

Agreed. And the longer your outdoors, the harder it is to reintegrate into the larger scocity! Most don't understand that. It's been almost 25 years since I was 1st on the street.(been out 4 times)
The nightmares finally stopped. But the experience still effects me to an extent, even all these years later. I was out for 9 months that 1st time. Winter to the following summer. Winter in the Rockies isn't easy when your on the street!
There ARE real solutions to this problem! But it will only continue, as there's BIG money to be made off of the suffering of others! BOTH the public AND private sectors make LOTS of $$ from this.
I talked with someone back then about this problem. He was from another nation. What he said has stuck with me all this time. I asked "Back home would you see this?". His answer was very telling, though embarrassing to me as a US citizen. He said, "No. Because we have more pride in our people!".
Interesting observation I think. We care more in this country about homeless animals, then our homeless people! In a country as wealthy as ours, there is NO EXCUSE for folks to NOT have somewhere to call home! It's embarrassing and disgraceful that we have just given up on part of our population! And there's PLENTY of blame to go around.

Their are many kinds of homelessness. I think the biggest contributor to the chronic population is mental illness and the time lag required to qualify for full disability benefits. It can take 9 months to a year to prove to the government you have severe mental illness in the meantime you will probably have swallowed up by the street culture, become traumatized more and addictions will have worsened trying to cope. Many guys I see on the street eventually get full benefits (about 1400.00 a month in Canada) but are now clinically traumatized and spend most of it on the newly worsened addiction. They are likely to be regularly if not frequently targeted by others on the street and come into the shelter with injuries every month or so. Many were generally healthy a few months prior, employed and living indoors but were hit with their first catastrophic symptoms of their illness for the first time just prior to losing their homes. Doctors should be able to write a perscription for housing (40$ a day, probably the least expensive item on their treatment regimen) .

One of the reasons that so many people are now refusing jobs is because of gentrification, in which money addicted gentrifiers can never get enough. The rents are already two to five grand a month with no end in sight. In order to qualify for an apartment you have to make three times the rent so that the gentrifiers can gradually drain you of more and more as time goes by. Restpite centers are a great bridge to a longer term program. Most are only 2 weeks however. Unless the desire is there in the individual, and a transitional program readily available after restpite, they will be right back on the street. Most 2 year programs that actually work have waiting lists months out. I am homeless, bounced through hoops dozens of times, finally in a program that works, by luck or the grace of God. Unfortunately some don't make it, respite centers need to have longer stay periods, which is money.

Most homeless people are drug addicts and like their lifestyle. The desire to change must come from within and there are many resources for a homeless person to pursue if they truly want to change their lives. Also, the ability for a person to support themselves is a big issue. Most homeless people don't have the education or trade to support themselves on a permanent basis. I have been homeless myself and I do have the education and ability to support myself which made it possible for me to overcome homelessness. I was homeless because I became a crack head many years ago and it lasted for years because I liked smoking crack more so than having a normal life. Part of the very reason why I am no longer homeless is because God sent a woman into my life and has supported me with her godly encouragement for years and she actually lives in a different country. 5 years later after having met her she is now coming to the USA soon and we will get married. Point being is she took a genuine interest in me as a person and did not give up. It took me several years to actually take a liking to her and see who she is as a person and I like what I see. She will be here soon and we will be married. God and His purpose for a human being must not be left out as part of the road to recovery and change. Change comes from within.

.One true thing is that one never thinks about these issues, until they are closest to it, or are actually THERE. Needless to say, if they are that close or if they are there, chances are they have already lost their esteem and ability to work out their issues alone, and have given up.

Why do I feel like I just watched a second rate shark tank pitch? It had the key elements. Things to the tune of "its a billion dollar industry" "we need to develop the technology and use social engineering" "I only have a limited test set, but I know it works" Obviously those aren't quotes, but I still feel the guy might be full of hot air.

John Maceri's nonprofit The People Concern publicly supports removing a crucial legal case that protects unhoused peoples' constitutional rights. Thanks John, today the supreme court is debating whether or not it's okay to criminalize people for sleeping outside when there is literally no where else to go.

Homelessness can be solved by voting for Yang for president 2020. Andrew wants to tax internet corps like Amazon and Netflix and give every U.S Citizen $1000 a month. Granted, $1000 isn't much, but it can give people a buffer. After that, those people who are still homeless just want to live that way.

That opening story is very telling of this guys mentality. The guy from western Europe says "I'm horrified. Absolutely horrified. The richest country on earth yet you let your citizens live like abandoned animals on the streets. In my country this would never be tolerated; we would overthrow the government".
He would think that because in his country the government runs them, the government is their "parent", their "daddy". So if people are on the street it is because their "parents" failed them. Their government failed them.
That is why America is different. We have freedom and personal choice. The government is not in charge the government is not suppose to be your "daddy". Personal responsibility. If people are on the streets it is because they have failed themselves or they choose to be.
I remember watching a video of someone talking about the difference between Americans and Europeans. He said something like.
In Europe when something goes wrong the people look to the government for help but in America the people tell the government to get out of our lives, leave us alone.

I have the answer to the "homeless epidemic"! Call it what it really is, a "drug epidemic" and get these people rehab, clean time. Why would you want to mask the real problem? Why would you want to make it easier for them to be addicts? Clean needles, safe places to shoot up, any drug under 3 grams is legal, etc. etc. They want this, but why?

  • @agalakovnatalia6224

He don't care to the point when he referred to homeless like them. Probably he not consider "them" as a human. With today technology to build housing is not so expensive, and cheapest option is 7-12 story buildings, but in my opinion governement don't want to solve this puzzle. To build housing, mean create a getto, with high percentage of crime and drugs, they don't want concentration of marginal in one place, so they prefer to do nothing.

I seriously think that the homeless issue will never be solved, unless a drug comes out for it. It is a mental illness of people refusing to work and manage their money better unlike the rest of the world can. I live in a small town of 8,340 people next to clemson university, and we have a homeless problem. Our area is filled with too much jobs that are forcing new businesses to close because they can't find help. Housing here is very affordable especially for white collars.

Oh, "why don't we create a fully integrated system?" Yeah, that's called (Constitutional Democracy) GOVERNMENT. BTW "Privatised Government" is ARISTOCRACY. The problem is NOT poverty, it's ARISTOCRACY. Constitutional Democracy National Governments spelled the end of Aristocracy and the end of poverty (after Aristocracy had put us through 2 world wars and the great depression). There is nothing complex about homelessness because there is nothing complex about Aristocracy, and there is nothing complex providing ourselves Constitutional Government. All this guy and everyone else is saying, over and over again, is: identifying the failure of privatised government and then trying reintroduce some sort of quasi government in parallel to reinvent the wheel.
Just my two cents cz I'm so sick of listening to people telling us how to solve homelessness (and all other social problems. Blah Blah Blah). WE DO NOT HAVE A HOMELESS PROBLEM, WE DO NOT HAVE A FAMILY VIOLENCE PROBLEM, WE DO NOT HAVE A RACISM PROBLEM ... WE HAVE A PRIVATISED GOVERNMENT PROBLEM, WE HAVE REINSTATED ARISTOCRACY. The End! (sic)
