I wish they added a pea that did absolutely nothing. You can't even eat it, it just does nothing. It would be the rarest item in Minecraft (inside desert temples or end cities), but it would just do nothing. That would be my favorite item.

Would actually be so cool for there to be a PvZ inspired turret and base protection system in minecraft. Always wanted to do this with snow golems but they're finicky and don't do any damage. It'll just be cool seeing the outside of your base and the monsters are trying to get in but kept getting pelted away by your turrets.
Pretty sure you can have the snowballs go through fire.

i think the pea is the early version of the sniffer's ability to find seeds under ground. the head was probably a test what they would grow into.

If I had to guess maybe one of the ancient plants that the Sniffer could dig up was a Peashooter but Mojang got in legal trouble with EA and had to remove/change it.
Hopefully the latter... I've always wanted to have a way to main Engineer in Minecraft.

I wish that was the case. But Popcap would probably laugh this off. EA, on the other hand... it sucks, I know. But death is as natural a part of the life cycle as birth. Think about it, what would Plants vs Zombies want us to do? Would they want us denying their death? Would they want us wallowing in self-pity as we mourn? No, they would want us to move forward and live our best lives. For their sake-- and for everyone's sake, really-- we should do just that.
