  • Yehuda Duenyas, AKA XXXY, is an MFA student in RPI's MFA program. His project, Ascent, uses EEG controlled performer flight as its centerpiece. Lauren controls her "ascent" by concentration read by an Emotive EEG headset. Here's a little look behind the scenes.
AMong other technologies, it employs OpenSound Control (OSC) for much of it's inter-program communications

The exhibition was today. As both a spectator and a participant, I can safely say that this was equal parts ethereal and AWESOME.
I do hope this installation will be reprised!

@jaredspiegel this is a work in progress, and these were our first interface tests. her ascent triggers sound and light ques via max/msp and show control. the sound and light you see being triggered are placeholder ques to test the functionality of the interface. we are now designing the actual experience so it becomes a seamless light and sound "show" as you ascend to a height of thirty feet. it will be inspired by renaissance paintings of ascension to the heavens. -xxxy

I'm afraid those who are talking about seeing the wires have missed the point, we made no attempt to hide the wire system, to conceal the wires, the harness, etc.
The point of the demonstration is the interface that has been developed between the emotiv headset and the system that controls the performers flight.

@Acheiropoietos It's one of EMPAC's 2 recording studios. The entire building is pretty amazing.

@jaredspiegel There are audio and lighting cues for her as she reaches certain heights. They are directly correlated to her height, but not direction. It's a little hard to see from this perspective and it was really just the first tests with the audio and lighting cues.

@Kuz87 The wires are supposed to be there.. It's EEG controlled. They would have tried hiding the harness and wires if they didn't want them showing up :P

@Phaladone The system is not up and running right now. Yehuda will be having an MFA thesis show, and I believe volunteers will be able to give it a try (by signup). Keep an eye out at the empac website and box office empac.rpi.edu .

what the heck is the helicopter/turbine sound effect that sometimes ends abruptly with a thud and doesn't seem to correlate to either her position in the air or her direction of travel?

@kromeclutch so she isn't actually flying if there are cable holding her... it's just a mind-controlled interface to an external system which could also be a mini 4WD or a microwave oven. Brain-computer interfaces exist since the '70s. These is also no evidence in the video that she is actually controlling anything with her brain.

It's a performance venue. The winches are designed to hold super-heavy equipment in place, not to zoom things around the room.

¿Cuál es el problema? ¿Es que nadie ve el cable? Se han gastado todo el dinero es hacer efectos sonoros peliculeros en vez de gastárselo en retoques informáticos. 7.34 minutos para esto...
