This station is officially off the air as of 8/26/24 12:01 AM. They played the classic "bong bong bong BONG" at midnight one last time and it ended with a minute of silence.
I miss all the old radio Sounders and tones the networks had, before they cut them out, or changed them and "hip-hopped" them for the modern generations. If only I could go back to the mid 70's again.
I totally agree..The chimes and music of the 1970s from this station and other networks were the very best. Almost everything thats modernized is pure crap. we're blessed to have grown up during this era
I miss this era of WCBS. The station sounded so big. When I listen, at 4am as I am driving in to host my morning show, all the news is pre-recorded from the evening before. Sad.
WCBS newsradio 88 will be saying goodbye on August 26th I humbly suggest that we record the last few moments of this great station but I am not giving up without a fight to try to save it
The only recent/live feature on the station during overnights by the end being traffic by that point, which I believe has been shared with WINS too since the staff consolidation ironically. As late as about a week ago I was tuning into 880 at night, and heard the same traffic reporter on both 1010 (which I tend to pick up way less) and 880 a few of those nights.
WCBS News radio 880 since it became an all news radio station, the birthplace of Cabot, Harley Carnes, and including Tom Kaminsky, in the helicopter of chopper 880, and the Osgood Files on the Westwood One Radio network via WCBS-880AM every :44 minutes past the hour every weekday morning.
The radio sounders of WCBS 880AM for the past fifty-seven years was an all news radio station and the final time on August 26, 2024 now will be the call letters of ESPN Radio NY/WHSQ-AM 880.
Sad to hear WCBS is now gone and replaced with crap. News may not always be as interesting. Can be repetitive, but the fact you have live voices on the other end of a radio and phone via app to report stories and any breaking information be it big or small. That impacts lives and it should matter. Especially when this station was so important at a critical time, 9/11 along with 1010 WINS. They should have kept this station alive. Audacy heads didn't care enough to leave this station on air given its rich history. KNX (Los Angeles), KRLD (Dallas), WINS (New York), WBBM (Chicago) and of course KCBS (San Francisco) - good luck and hope these don't get silenced. Too bad CBS sold these off to a horrible company (IMO). Corporate greed at its worst.
"Sad to hear WCBS is now gone and replaced with crap." You bet-- however, IMO, sports radio is nowhere near as bad as what the former WCBS could have been (hard-line political talk, Evangelical religion, or quite a few other things).
Now it is soon gone, replaced by worthless sports talk radio. The society, this one as Paar said so long ago is not only below par (pun intended) but per Jack, no longer hovering, but down the drain.
The music still sucks cause they took black music and made it whiteized de-emphaiszing the trumpet and somewhat whitenizing it to fit with the violins. This is some The WB/Tribune/CBS "Friends"-loving unpopular shit.
3:46- brings back memories listening to WCBS Newsradio 88 back in the 90s as a young kid

And left a hole in my 68 year old gut.
The realities of am radio and the broadcast media landscape have made this change unavoidable.
You're at 88 on your AM dial, WCBS Newsradio. For radio news, the best in the business
I remember Harley Carnes on WCBS and Craig Allen
@@dougfredricks2017 do you remember Jim Donnelly and Robert Vaughan (no not the actor)
@@PREGO1966 - I remember when it was *Lou Adler* and Jim Donnelly.

I remember the good old days. I was brought up on stuff
It was MUCH BETTER BACK IN THE DAY!!!

@@Jerseysson27 Not much you can do to save it. The paperwork has been sign by Good Karma to take control of the station on the 26th.

i remember every 15 minutes they would play those tones that were really cool i knew the time like clockwork i wish i could hear those tones again
“Four tones will follow. The final and loudest tone marks the hour. Now CBS covers the world at (time) Bing!!”
I think it was "covers the world" not "works"

CJAD 800 AM Montreal, Canada used these jingles for years
WCBS News radio 880 since it became an all news radio station, the birthplace of Cabot, Harley Carnes, and including Tom Kaminsky, in the helicopter of chopper 880, and the Osgood Files on the Westwood One Radio network via WCBS-880AM every :44 minutes past the hour every weekday morning.
Produced by Axcess Group (Otis Connor) in Dallas
Now that is one kickbutt news music package.
Theme at 3:52 contains a "Copacabana" idiom.
it sure does
better yet, a news helicopter hovering over the Copacabana for a live shot
8:45 the best one imo
12:23 is one of the most familiar ones
4:27 is a nice jingle
Thank You Don!!!!!

Motif at 8:48 is reminiscent of "Killer Joe."
Soon there will be a Sports station at this frequency!! 😩😢😢😢
So sad to see it go.
SAME HERE!!!😢😢😢
6:44 sounds like the Love Boat
It was my favorite station 😢
Sadly missing the old Cbs news intro jingle here
When did WCBS do these? I left the tri state in 86. Don't remember these? They sound pretty cool for 80s.
More than just the headlines....
Some black man wrote this African Episcopal church choir brass shit. Cause it's gangsta
Radio 85, KOA......................Denver!
Does wcbs 880 have a election jingle?
I think the 6:40 bit could be good for a Community Calendar segment.
3:46 It sucks I'll never get to hear this ever again 😢 Screw Audacy!
At least radio jingles are given a bit more respect than television jingles...
Amazing how well this holds up. Everything sounds good, except the drum machine drums. Sounds like an Oberheim DMX.

Wasn't the first Axcess package inaugurated in 1989 or so?
