This started the decline of Xbox UIs, starting with the Kinect update, the UI got more flat in appearance, and a bit too bright with the whites, made it hard on the eyes when gaming at night. The 2008 NXE dashboard was the second best Xbox UI (the best being Blades), as it had a pleasing design, and while it did get a little simplified in terms of detail, it was still very noticeable, and was easier on the eyes with the dark grays.
Yeah. Easily the worst one is the Metro one which has Windows 8 as the 360 UI and as for the brightness, I agree it's too bright at times, they should've had a night mode or kept the color feature from the Blades which is so dope.
That's why I love the Windows Vista too, this type of design is way more advanced to my eyes in a tech way, I think the appearance on vista is more actual than in windows 8 or 10.
They should have kept this dashboard. It was more or less the same functionality as NXE but with some design refreshes to go with the slim. There was no reason to update from here.

Metro sucks, Kinect was just a UI change that made everything light and got rid of minor features that made the 360 amazing, NXE was the prettiest but it was less functional, and blades was intuitive.
Feel as sad for me as you want, I only experienced the metro disign, so I prefer it. If only there was an update that let you choose what dashboard you wanted, so I know how great the other ones are.

Personally I love the flat design way more, but there's something about the old, curved, 3D-esque design that just amazes me to this day.
