Fred Johnson reminds me more than a fair bit of Smedley Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine (two time Medal of Honor recipient) who fought in many wars for the U.S. in the early 20th century (including the Banana Wars, blatantly imperialist military actions taken on behalf of corporate interests) and later deeply regretted it, writing a book entitled "War is a Racket." Look him up, it's a fascinating story with more than a few parallels. Also, The Terror was fantastic.
Butler was also approached by a group of businessmen in the 30s to lead a military coup to overthrow FDR, as the new deal wasn't popular with rich people.
Actors and plot are cool but I was curious about how the space battles are created; more the storyboarding than the SFX. I've watched and rewatched the battle at Thoth station a hundred times and I still tense up as the Roci wraps itself around the spin station before blasting away the anti-asteroid canon.

There are more than two Terminator movies. Despite the fact that first two Terminators are great classics, I still have a lot of love for Rise of the Machines. When I was in my late teens I drove a step van delivering lunches to the local elementary schools in Aurora Ill. At that time I actually looked like the terminator, I wore black leather biker jacket like he did in T2 and had my hair cut like that and wore sunglasses and the whole nine yards. Guys, keep up the great work! Really enjoy hearing how much fun you both have making these. One thing I do want to note though, and I’m sure everyone that’s been watching your show will agree with me here, is that if you stick to a one show episode per podcast episode, you’re obviously only going to do a short amount of shows. So...if every now and then you want to do whole episodes devoted to a favourite movie that inspired you, like the recent episode devoted to Ron Perlman, then we’re all absolutely on board! 🥰
Managed to listen to episodes 6 and 7 today. Loved listening to you guys. Really help me get through a slow day. I was also wondering how Fred Johnson ended up running Tycho. Great to get a little insight to that. Keep up the good work 👍
I always thought that people struggle with "Anubis" because Ceres is so far removed from Earth. Why would belters learn about 4000-year old ancient Earth gods? Pop culture that keeps Anubis alive (usually incorrectly) in modern times might not have drifted to Ceres. It struck me as worldbuilding.
Gotta say you guys are doing an awesome job. I'm loving the episode recaps, the stories, the BTS bits, the Easter eggs and all the little side adventures you go on with other movies and actors. Keep it up and if you could drop a note on how season 6 is progressing, I'm sure we'd like to know that too. Last thing I think we heard was Wes was doing a table read... how close is that to start of shooting?
"Accidental success" or not, this is a great universe, story, and lore. In the sense that I appreciate the work that went into it (on all the levels) as a viewer. Fantastic stuff!

Three dumb questions for Ty: 1. Nauvoo/Behemoth/Medina seems huge but it's really kind of modest compared to designs for O'Neill/McKendree cylinders. Did you intentionally decide those larger rotating habitats, which lack the grimy unitard-filled tin-can esthetics of Expanse vessels, were a step too far for the audience, or that they didn't suit the kind of stories you wanted to tell, or do you feel there are engineering problems that will make them more difficult to realize in the near future, or ... were you unaware of those ideas when writing the series? 2. Mars in real life is a hell-hole of ionizing radiation, temperature extremes, and crippling microgravity with laundry bleach for soil. Meanwhile Venus, at 50 kilometers above the surface, has Earth-normal pressure, temperature and gravity, a working ionosphere to protect people against radiation and meteorites, plenty of CHON in its atmosphere for farming, and Earth air is as buoyant there as Helium is on Earth. So ... how come you have an MCRN instead of a VCRN? 3. Much has been made in the media of next year's NASA mission to 16 Psyche, the most valuable object in the solar system. The metal core of a smashed planet left over from the start of the solar system, it's solid iron/nickel/gold/platinum about 200 miles across. Within the next few decades we'll likely see a gold rush of entrepreneurs trying to lay claim to the biggest metal mine known to man. So ... how come Psyche hasn't figured prominently in the series?
I really appreciate the stories and background of y'alls childhood. Most of the movies have similar meaning to me. The movies I haven't seen I will watch to anew appreciation.
I really liked the film Frailty, it was very different from a standard horror film. More layered & psychological. It's fun to hear all these behind the scenes stories & movie making trivia that you two share 👍
Wow, that's an actual restaurant? Anybody know which one and if it's still open? Once this pandemic is over and I'm back in T.O. again regularly I'd love to check it out.
Talking about Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen and I was waiting and hoping you would mention Near Dark. Such a brilliant, underrated flick from back then with Jenette Goldstein as well. I"m always reminded of that movie when talking aliens & the terminator fliks.
Ty&Wes Recommendations •Bill Paxton in The Dark Backward. •Interrogation Scene/whole film = Closetland. Alan Rickman and Madeline Stowe. •Carnival Of Souls pre-dates Twilight Zone and Night Of The Living Dead. Hugely influential.
Interesting the motivation ty gives for Octavia telling him to forget it, I thought she'd realised how big the case was and that if he did solve it he would end up dead, which he did.
See you guys talk about the Phase Plasma rifle in the 40 watt range brought back so many high school joke memories. All the Bill Paxton stuff is spot on. You guys are awesome.
Fun fact: Bill Paxton and Lance Henrickson are the only actors to be killed by a Terminator, a Xenomorph, and a Predator. Well, Paxton for sure; it’s debatable if the Xenomorph Queen was able to “kill” Bishop in Aliens.
I love how Wes goes right back to his "Jay Hernandez gets shot through the heart" complaint. 🤣 Next episode ask Ty how it missed his spine since it went straight through the middle. 😜
I don't know how well they really thought it through, but he couldn't stand or move much afterwards and they have nerve regeneration medical tech, so who says it didn't?
I love the movie references tucked into these! Had never heard of Nightmare Alley, found it on YT and loved it. Adore Paxton and Weird Science so now I need to find Frailty ...
I have a custom made replica neon sign of the TechNoir sign from Terminator. Looking at it in my living room right now. Love this show. Would be very much up for a 2 hour episode talking about The Terminator and chairoscuro! Episode 6 of The Expanse would work for me too. Do people call Chad Coleman Cutty in person?
So, I've seen your Podcast pop up constantly, but never clicked on it. Well, I always happen to see the Aftershow one pop up first, so I never checked it out. Since Walking Dead (probably even before that) shows started doing these "after the show" shindigs and I could just never get into them. Then, I happen to take a second and read the title and noticed you had your own separate Podcast. Well, then found out it's the same used for the Aftershow. Anyways, I'm glad I clicked on it. All the Paxton stuff in this episode is great, man ... hilarious that you guys know his stuff so well. Chet is a great character and Bill was perfect for the part. Good stuff all around
Anubis always reminds me of a Danger Mouse episode (an English kids cartoon from the 80s) where they visit a pyramid: Danger Mouse : Good grief, It's a secret chamber. Penfold : Not secret enough for me. Penfold : [spots an enormous statue] Aargh! What's that? Danger Mouse : Oh, that's Anubis. Penfold : But he's got clothes on, Chief. Danger Mouse : No, no, not a nudist, Penfold, Anubis. It's the ancient Egyptians' god of embalming. Penfold : I don't know about him, I'm barmy for coming down here.
Me too. I've got 2 streaming platforms at the moment. A few weeks back I looked up Alien and after watching this I looked up Terminator (+ the only sequels that actually exist) but unfortunately they're not on my streaming platforms. On the other hand I did get to watch the Terror and that was pretty cool.
It's crazy because I just recommended the movie "Frailty" to a YT reaction channel after she watched Predator 2 and Aliens and said that Bill Paxton's characters were kind of assholes... And to come full circle, she has also been doing reactions to The Expanse! : )
Tell Andrew that The Expanse fans are really happy about the noodles scene. And they are also really happy about the second Blade Runner! One did not undermine the other!

AWESOME! I absolutely envisioned that character in The Butcher of Anderson Station to be Drummer. I feel validated. :D
So many powerful character actors with 2 to 3 scenes made this series stand out for depth and raw emotion

Which of the 2 Predator films was he in? (Because there are only 2 😉 😁)
If you consider Predator 2 canon, there is a lot more than 2 movies. Alien vs Predator and Predators are both easily as good if not better. 🤷🏽♂️
Lance Henrickson is a Monster.
Frailty was amazing!
It was established on the Cant that they can regrow limbs now. So yeah, space medicine.
I thought that main Anderson station actor did a hell of a job.
Y’all are great guys. Love the show. Ty, what are some of your favorite books right now?
I love how Wes goes right back to his "Jay Hernandez gets shot through the heart" complaint. 🤣
Next episode ask Ty how it missed his spine since it went straight through the middle. 😜
I loved that too! Ty just gave up on correcting him :D
I don't know how well they really thought it through, but he couldn't stand or move much afterwards and they have nerve regeneration medical tech, so who says it didn't?
You guys are THE FUCKING BEST for doing these podcasts. They are very enjoyable
I love the movie references tucked into these! Had never heard of Nightmare Alley, found it on YT and loved it. Adore Paxton and Weird Science so now I need to find Frailty ...
“Nobody who not spends 4.5h in a gym a day look like Chris...”, well Wes looks like Chris, how many hours does he spent on the gym? ;)
That was my first thought. Like I’m shocked Wes didn’t flex, take of his shirt, or at least call out Ty for being rude😂
@@ourabouras I guess he is too humble.
@@volkhen0 Yup, that sounds like Wes. Humble😂😂😂
Maybe Wes spends 4.5 hours a day at the gym too? 😂
@@ourabouras honestly Wes is incredibly humble, maybe aggressively humble. Was kinda shocked by that cause he's so cool
Great podcast guys, thank you. :)
The song Tech Noir by Gunship is amazing.
that Tech noir t shirt is just brilliant :)
Not only do you talk about The Expanse (my 2nd favorite show of all time... so far, unless it nosedives like GOT. Number 1 is The Shield (2002-2007). Guys, anyone, check out The Shield. Everyone thinks it's like Law & Order. It's not. There's not a single bad episode and not episodic, just like The Expanse. Was able to do a full run and wrap up on very emotional note. Written by Sean Ryan and Kurt Sutter who then went on to do Sons Of Anarchy after. You will NOT be disappointed! Where was I... oh yeah) you talk about movies I grew up with and also love. Subscribed. Not what I expected. Keep it up.
Another great show. Lots of unassuming heroes though. Not everyone is Hemsworth. John Wick, Jack Reacher anything with Densel :)
Keep doing what you are doing. Feel like I could watch /listen to these all the time. As always gotta go watch Terminator again. Was 7 when it came out and certainly didn't see it in theaters.
All the Paxton stuff in this episode is great, man ... hilarious that you guys know his stuff so well. Chet is a great character and Bill was perfect for the part.
Good stuff all around
You guys are terrific, thanks for this podcast and for the expanse!
Anubis always reminds me of a Danger Mouse episode (an English kids cartoon from the 80s) where they visit a pyramid:
Danger Mouse : Good grief, It's a secret chamber.
Loved the show. I had every intention of watching the Snyder Cut after watching this. But now I kind of want to watch Terminator. :)
Me too. I've got 2 streaming platforms at the moment. A few weeks back I looked up Alien and after watching this I looked up Terminator (+ the only sequels that actually exist) but unfortunately they're not on my streaming platforms. On the other hand I did get to watch the Terror and that was pretty cool.
another fun episode, thank you guys this show is the best thing ever x
Awesome show, love you guys!
Did they get the name Rocinante from the song Cygnus X-1, off Rush's A Farewell to Kings & Hemispheres albums ?
You guys are so much fun to listen to. Good times
It's crazy because I just recommended the movie "Frailty" to a YT reaction channel after she watched Predator 2 and Aliens and said that Bill Paxton's characters were kind of assholes... And to come full circle, she has also been doing reactions to The Expanse! : )
Love that scene in twister when Paxton sees his arch rival Jonas (Cary Elwes) and says “Jonas... son of a bitch”.
Love the Expanse guys
