This is one of my favorite works...thank you for sharing this wonderful performance! I had the great privilege of hearing the Sonata performed by Arthur Gold and Robert Fizdale, the duo piano team for whom Poulenc wrote it, thanks to Community Concerts, in Boise, Idaho in 1966. I would have to wait 45 years before hearing another live performance of it: by Orion Weiss and Anna Polonsky at Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon. So happy to have this superb rendition!!!
I find your knowledge and experience of this work very pertinent, Nathan. Having really got into Poulenc in the last year or two, this composition is new to me. One correspondent here finds the first movement far too fast. Interesting. Certainly where it has been possible to compare performances, the ones that seem to work best are where his slow or adagio passages are taken at a languid pace, for the music to me benefits from very sensitive, even indulgent interpretation. Be that as it may, you have heard several performances and seem very happy with this one. Reassuring!

Bonjour Alexis, Je ne suis pas vraiment d'accord avec vous... je comprends ce que vous voulez dire, mais entre "extrêmement lent et calme" Noire = 52, (l'indication de Poulenc) et le tempo pris dans le début du premier mouvement il y'a quand même un monde.... Et puis pour l'avoir joué il est bien plus évident de mettre en place le début à ce tempo... Je pense qu'il y'a un juste milieu à trouver (c'est sûr que noire = 52, c'est très difficile à défendre, et on l'a toujours joué un peu plus allant..) Globalement c'est quand même très beau mais je trouve qu'il manque une dimension malgré tout le respect et l'admiration que j'ai pour ces deux immenses artistes. Pareille remarque pour les moments calmes et extatiques (surtout dans le premier mvt) ou je trouve qu'il manque un je ne sais quoi (peut être une dimension de rêverie plus métaphysique) . Très belle performance quand même !
Used to enjoy my teachers Steven & Nadya Gordon rehearsing this work before they recorded it in the '70s on the Klavier label.
Yes, super. Rudenko is so great, and Lugansky I love also. But terrible that there is not more of Rudenko.

on a le droit de s'écarter d'un tempo car on ne peut pas jouer à contre-coeur un tempo imposé
qui ne nous convient pas c'est aussi ça interpréter c'est donner notre traduction....
01:03 if someone had said that this was a Rachmaninoff composition, I would definitely have believed it
the tempi they take in the intro - first movement is ridiculously far from what is marked in the score, and it ruins it.
Thumbs down en ce qui me concerne! Autant j'aime écouter Lugansky inerpréter Rachmaninov ou Chopin, autant je trouve que lui et son comparse n'ont pas vraiment compris la musique (trop française ?) de Poulenc. Le 1er mouvement de cette sonate est si beau quand on laisse un peu aux harmoniques le temps de vibrer...
