  • This video was taken in the fall of '13 at the Paramount Theater's production of "In The Heights". I didn't get a chance to plug in to a monitor output, so it's a very drum-heavy mix.
    The first minute or so is basically no playing, but the entire song was posted for the benefit of my students who are learning it. The real playing starts at 1:05.

    Very tight playing. The sound of this kit is perfect, especially the snare.

    I love this video for:
    1) the exemplary playing
    2) just how good it sounds
    3) how inspired it makes me feel to want to get this song totally right, the way this guy did
    Thanks for uploading!

    Found your channel searching for examples of Jim Chapin's Advanced Drumming (those loose search words). After seeing that video, I'm checking out the rest. Subscribed! I like your playing a lot. thanks for posting these; one must scour a bit to find videos of quality relaxed chops. I'm able to read your form enough to learn from where I'm at, looking forward to re-watching them a year or two from now to make more discoveries. I'll be studying your moves! cheers

      midinerd Hey, thanks a lot! I'll try to keep updated and add videos so you don't get bored. Ha!
      Also (and forgive the shameless plug here), I do long-distance email and Skype lessons if that might be something you're interested in. If not, again, forgive the commercial. Thanks for checking out the videos!

    The crash you hit in the beginning of the song is so powerful. What is it? Oh, and the headphones you're using? Thanks and great drumming

      Dak Drums Thanks so much for the compliments! I believe that was a Sabian 16” Evolution crash. The headphones are Ultraphones by GK Music. I think the website is gk-music.com or something. Check them out; they’re the best!

      Thanks so much! It's a 4.5x14" 10-ply Keller shell snare with die-cast hoops. Also I had a 30-degree top bearing edge (like Gretsch) with a standard 45 bottom. Love this snare. It feels like a Vinnie-esque 'pop' when I play it.

    What cymbals are you using? They sound amazing. I’m in the market to guy new cymbals for theater and yours sound amazing

    • @hipskind
      @hipskind  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks! I was using a combination of Sabian and Zildjian at the time. I know the main crash was a 16" Evolution crash, and the ride was a 20" Pre-Aged. Can't remember what I was using for the 2nd crash (17 or 18", probably something dark), and the FX cymbal on the far right is an 18" O-Zone I think. The FX cymbal in the foreground was a 15" Azuka. Sorry my memory is a little hazy on it; it's been a few years now! Also, I'm a Sabian artist now, so....buy Sabian! 😊😎

      Thanks. After all these years, your memory won’t be the same lol! I’m gonna look into the cymbals. I’m a zildjian fan but I wish zildjian had the nice sound like certain Sabians have. Question, how did you get into theater drumming and what can I do to get into a pit playing set. I’m 15 now, and i declined to play Evita for my schools cause I’m not a huge fan of the music, but their other shows I’m gonna play. Is that a good start? And what should I do to make my dream of being a pit drummer come true?

    • @hipskind
      @hipskind  6 лет назад +2

      A few thoughts:
      1. Don't make it a habit to turn down a show because you don't like the music, especially at 15. Odds are you'll learn a ton, and might even grow to like it. Regardless, I've played tons of shows I didn't care for. You can't afford to be very selective.
      2. Seek out other drummers who are doing shows, gigs you'd like to be doing. Ask if you can sit with them in the pit for a show. Take some lessons. Get to know them and get in their circles.
      3. Learn all music, not just theater music. That probably sounds goofy, but it's true. I didn't start out doing theater; I just played everything I possibly could and my skill set (versatility, reading ability, ears, flexibility, etc.) helped me get into playing theater gigs later in my career.
      4. Don't resist learning perc, such as mallets, timpani and other things. Odds are 100% you will have to do that.
      Hope this helps, and best of luck!

      Tom Hipskind Alright. I’ll take up every show that comes my way. The problem was is that I’m the best lighting guy my high school has ever had and it was a whole big thing with what I was gonna do. I chose lighting a. Because I didn’t like the music b. They would be screwed without me. I’ve got in contact with one of my friends who plays drums in a broadway pit in NYC. Hopefully I can sit in with him. I try to expand my range pretty far. I play pop, rock, jazz, funk, hip hop, rnb, and a few other genres. I will never play any form of metal or edm though! I can play a wide variety of percussion. I can read timpani music, but it’s not good though. Mallets to me are the devil! I see pictures of pit drummers and they have their set and mallets to the side. I want to learn. I’m using a new private teacher that I’m starting on Wednesday. Hopefully this will be a great experience and well worth the money

    You change your grip when hitting cymbals later in the song. Just for fun or was there a reason?
