MMI boots and then shuts off. Monitor goes on and then black. None of the MMI control works. Failed component in the optical chain is the Amplifier which is water damaged.
This leads to other videos in my channel for troubleshoot and find the root cause of the the water leak.
The troubleshoot steps applies to similar Audi models. Hope this video helps you on troubleshooting similar problems. GL.
btw, there are plenty of videos on how to "replace the audi MMI board". it is a prone to failure component with water/coffee spills from the top over time. I followed this one to replace it. It is time-consuming but really cheap for DYIs:

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my experience with MMI problem! One day for my car died a battery and for a while i didn't have a chance to charge it! When i charged a batterie the car running normally and everything is working but then i wondered why my MMI is not working! I searched everywhere a information and i couldn't find my problem! MMI was completely dead! I tried all video but nothing worked for me! But then i start to check optical cable and understand that he is not getting a power! I have audi a6 4f kombi and fuse i have back in the trunk and i start to check it! The first fuse what is for Digital Signal Processing (DSP) /
BOSE amplifier 30a was burned of! I change it and It was nothing! I couldn't get it what was wrong still! Then i start to search a fuses diagram! And i found it's in front on right side too fuses for MMI! I start to check and there i found one more fuse what was burned! It was position 12 Media drives, front (MMI) what is 5a! Before guys you are a taking a part a car please check a fuses because you don't need to do more work as you need! For me was only burned 2 fuses but i almost taked a part all salon! I hope these comment will for help! Have a nice day every one!
I have a 2006 Audi A6 Quattro Avant. My system is very similar to yours and your video should put me on the right track. Thank you!
Did you figure out what it was I have the same exact car?
Mine stopped working. And the worst is that the screen wont turn on. Due to On/Off button is located on this whole surface. But. I Fixed it. and here is what happened./. this can trigger malfunction when you change your battery. I completely forgot about that, and then remembered. So here is the rest: you need to locate the amp(s) in the trunk, and disconnect them . then disconnect the battery and leave for 5 minutes. and then leave the amp off , try to turn on the car. and see if the entertainent system buttons powers on. Mine did. then I turned off car, reconnected the amp and it worked again. It just needed to be reconnected. or reset
I hope this works for my s6. Didn’t realize getting a new battery would cause this.
Can you clarify what you mean by the "amp"?
Bose AMP in the boot trunk left side says Bose
@@MoAli-vh8uo mine is a Harman Becker automotive system. I replaced it and still the same issue.
Had this exact same issue after doing a parasitic draw test, MMI turning on for a second then going blank. MMI control buttons not illuminating . Tried this sequence and it worked perfectly.
My mmi control lights up sometimes and on the screen the audi mmi logo shows up at the same time but I can’t use the mmi.
It changes between blackscreen and mmi logo.
Is it the mmi control unit that has the issue?
Hi mate thanks for your video, i have the same issue with my audi a6. I brought the loop bypass plug. After i plugged followed the steps shown in your video the screen comes on for couple of seconds and then switches right off again. Any advice would help thank you
Tu la sauvé la vie mec merci merci merci !!!’👍👍👍
Hi! Just in case anybody is fixing their dead MMI. My Bose amp died, it showed electric: OK; optical: ERROR. Everything else was up. I replaced the amp and it booted to life. You just need to disable component protection afterwards. VCDS was pretty useful, but you need ODIS to get it adapted to the car.

very helpfull video, many thanks my problem was solved after your 15 min of video ! in my case that was the phone module water dammaged , i have an official vcds and i have never seen the optical function :) thanks a lot
Do you have the link to the bypass?
Very useful!! Thx!
Good job, thanks
Hello Tony. What program is that VCDS? Is it Ross-Tech? Or a different one? Also, where did you get the cable?
yeah ross-tech. I got cable from ross-tech.
Hey I. Couldn't get in green screen or how do u order the VDC to do that? I have same car I think it's an 2010 audi a6 3.0 quattro u have sam?
Hello friend, I have a similar problem with the screen when I start the car, the screen turns on for a couple of minutes and then it turns off, could you help me, what is happening?
I have this problem in an audi a6 2005 it turns on and off, connect the bipass cable but it still does not work?
Did you fix the problem, thanks!
it worked for 3 and 4 times the stereo then it turned off again and it never turned on.😐
Hello, I have the same problem as well.
Please send me the link where you purchase this bypass cable and bose
My MMI works fine, but after 10 mins it just restarts itself doesn't matter ignition on or off, any idea?
Hi thank you for the upload. I have tried bypassing all three modules individually and still the mmi will not power on. Also all fuses are good. Does this mean the mmi control board has failed?
does the console buttons light up at all? if not, better change the board.
@@diy-tony8296 only two of the buttons light up
@@eddyc9339 better change the MMI board.
@@diy-tony8296 thank you. It’s strange, the two buttons on the mmi controls that light up don’t shut off. Even when the cars off and doors locked
@@diy-tony8296 Is the central panel mmi connected to the steering wheel?
Hey I have this problem in my '08 Audi A6 and I replaced the amp and now I have a working mmi and display that doesn't shut off right away but the bottom left button(sound button) next to the big middle knob won't light up or give me any sound. Tested all the different connections radio, sirus, nav, cd player, and Bluetooth with optical loops(male and female plugins) and all seemed good but unfortunately the same result. Plugged in a diagnostic tester and got back that the radio tuner was not activated or enabled. Do I need to replace my radio unit in the truck or am I missing something?
i have same car, how did you find out this was the problem
Did uou fix it? I am having the same problems.
yeah. the MMI is fixed, boots up. you can use my approach for troubleshoot. in my case it is the amplifier. It might be other component failure in the loop for you.
tonyx-DIY did you buy a used amplifier to fix it or new? I bought the loop cable and nothing happened. Any other suggestions that I’m maybe overlooking?
And please tell me where did you find the hex-can cable and how much did you pay for it? Thanku you🙏
you issue might not be in the amp. like I explained might be other component failure in the optical loop. do you have CD/DVD changer, USB plugins..etc for example. I got the cable and software from ross-tech.
@@wrestlercouple6607 I got the used amp but looks like I have the issues else where in the AMP electric plug. speaker not functioning for the moment. but with the optical plug to close the loop everything else works that are controlled by the MMI.
How do u search in amazon the by pass
Hi, i will buy the bypass, and the screen is work but i no have sound?
mine had this issue and the battery kept randomly dieing got rid of it in the end
My sisters cars battery randomley dies could that be a problem?
How did u conclude that amplifier is falty?
VCDS diagnostics says so . also everything else works well after by passing the AMP.
Alles working, but no sound ?
My Audi A6 2008 3.0 Quattro MMI turns on with white light only and I do not see anything on it - where it went wrong , any idea ?
however other functions like FM and all the MMI buttons works fine - meaning are not dead.
I did my and it didn’t work what do I do
Hey, my mmi doesn’t work at all nothing pops up no lights nothing. I went to see the fuse box and I found out the I was missing like 2 fuses and one was blown. Do you think that can be the problem?
there is a good chance it is fuses because it is like no power for the whole thing. you definitely want to replace the blown fuses first. not sure why there would be missing fuses through. definely fix the fuses and rule it out and move on to further troubleshooting. if it is just fuses, you are lucky. gl
tonyx-DIY thank you. I actually bought the car like this with mmi not working for way less $$$ but never asked what happened to the mmi and also the mmi buttons are really sticky looks like coffee has been spilled on it but i changed the circuit board and was still having the problem. By the way, i did some research I found out that there were more fuses connected to the mmi on other fuses location.
What kinda of app did you get?
Hello Tony, can you send the name of the cable to bypass the amplifier, so i can make the same test on mine? :)
fiber optical loop bypass www.amazon.com/RENYIAO-Bypass-Adapter-Mercedes-Porsche/dp/B07PH536JG/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=optical+bypass&qid=1606858732&sr=8-4
Mine will make a thumping sound on the speakers when powering the car off. The screen comes on when I push buttons but then turns right off. (Half of the screen) nothing plays
Mate, even myself having the same issue. How did you fixed it?
My car won’t start will turn over but no fire could it be becouse of this
What software is that on the computer?
it is ross tech VCDS which comes with the cable.
I need d boss diagnosis machine
Dang it!
great video but bad talking
