    The section on Boxter ownership is priceless, not just for the car itself but for the way you said it added therapeutic value to your busy and stressful working life. If more people loved their cars a little more and paid as much attention to perfecting their driving skill I can only wonder how fewer fatigue related accidents, road rage incidents and coronary/blood pressure health issues would occur! Great video man!

    Great choice! I would pick the PDK also. I will never go back to the old school type manuals.

    I recently drove my first PDK (2014 Boxster S) and I agree with you 100% it pretty much reads your mind which is awesome. Always been a 5/6 speed guy but I think Porsche has done a great job with the PDK and would have made the same decision as you. However for older generations (Tiptronic, pre PDK) I think 6 speed is the way to go.

      +rezilient112 I heard the old Tiptronic was so bad. But I really enjoy today's PDK. I was a little worried about the switch to PDK because of my history with manuals. But in spirited driving, I find that I am a faster driver with the PDK. And the gear changes are lightening quick. It can't be beat. Manuals are still great for the analog experience, but I am enjoying the PDK.

    I have the manual GTS cab and I wouldn't even consider the PDK. I am not a track guy, I am a windy curvy mountain road guy and for my liking the manual is the way to go. You just get a better feel for how the car operates, the steering and the involvement you get from shifting. Now if you want to cruise down the highway or are a track monster, then go for the PDK, but if your a purist like I am or just a fan who wants the most interaction with his car, then the 7 speed manual is a blast and you won't regret it.

    Thanks for your quick reply. The reason I asked was that when I picked up my car, the dealer asked if I wanted the front bumper drilled for the plate. I was a little confused by his asking and asked if the NYS DMV had changed the law. I did not want holes drilled in my new car. Ultimately, I had no choice. Thanks again!

    Great video. Thanks. I have two P cars, a 2007 911 GT3RS with a 6 speed and a 2012 Boxster S with PDK. I have a 2016 718 on order, with a PDK. The PDK is the best transmission available, bar none, on any car. Responsive, fast, fun, with all the control one would ever want. I love the GT3, but I know I am slower in it than I would be in a PDK car. And that's with an additional 80 HP!
    One small technical detail. The PDK is actually a manual transmission, just with two clutches, but no torque converter which is what an automatic is. Most race cars have been sequential, or dual clutch for years. Simple fact is that they allow the driver to focus on lines and the track, and not worry about which gear he is in, and the challenges of heel and toe downshifting. Keep up the great work.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson

      +James Suttie Wow, what is that 2007 911 GT3RS like to drive? That must be amazing. Do you track that car? If so, I am envious. And that is an interesting point about how a PDK equipped car can really make a difference in performance.
      I have seen reviews of the new Boxster S, by the way, and the torque created by the new turbo 4 appears to make the Boxster feel even more powerful than before. Yes horsepower is up, obviously, but that torque curve provides some real shove at lower revs. I still think the Boxster is one of the best handling cars you can buy. I loved my 2001 Boxster S out in the canyon roads in Southern California. It was just such a willing dance partner in the twisties. And the modern Boxster S with PDK will be mighty quick. Congratulations on getting one of those!

    • @jamessuttie1261
      @jamessuttie1261 8 лет назад

      +Joe Hutchinson Hi Joe. Yes the GT3 RS is amazing. I am keeping it forever, as I love the colours - black with orange wheels, mirrors and other accents. Very cool, and just a bit over the top. I have tracked it, but my first track was on the Nurburgring! We picked up the car in Stuttgart, and drove it through the Black Forest. Incredible. Driving a P car on great roads and sensible speed limits (I.e. Slow in towns and almost what ever you want on Autobahns). Great experience. Having a great car in North America misses a lot.
      Going back to the PDK part of the story, I would be willing to bet that my 2016 Cayman will be faster 0-60 than my RS. Likely not faster around a track, but probably close. And that is with 350 HP on the Cayman and 435 on the RS. The PDK is the biggest contributor to the Cayman performance.

    PDK can shift better and faster than I can, yes. I’m sure there are machines out there that can service my wife better than I can as well, but I still prefer to do it myself. In some things in life whether a machine can do something faster or better is just missing the point if the thing that it does is something you should enjoy doing yourself if it’s being done right. Cars will all be electric and self steering in 20 years as well, pity.
    Now, convenience is a whole other discussion. I’m getting older and it’s so nice to be less involved in the driving experience at times. For that, in a sports car at least, I think PDK is the best choice by far. But it is such an individual choice and this Porsche is a stunner of a car with dct and NA. Loved the video!

  • @ashman0071
    @ashman0071 8 лет назад +1

    Excellent color choice, coordinates really well with the black wheels - Boss! I totally agree with you but you fail to mention one thing. With PDK you can left foot brake and completely change the driving experience. Find a nice, indoor Karting place to practice and then take that experience to the streets with your PDK. I think you will be blown away!

    Great video. I own a 2001 Carrera cabriolet with a manual transmission. Also, a 1990 Nissan 300Z and 2004 350Z both with manual transmissions. I plan to purchase a 2018 Targa 4 GTS and debated on getting manual vs PDK transmission. I have not driven a vehicle with PDK trans but my research thus far have me leaning heavily in favor of the PDK. This video nudged me even more in that direction. Thanks again.

    Good video. I've had nearly all manuals throughout my driving years, but I recently found a PDK 981S for a good price despite looking for a manual. I experienced nearly immediate buyer's remorse since it felt like something was missing from the driving experience, but after only a few weeks with the car, I'm hooked on the PDK. I still have a Miata with a 6MT, but the PDK is so impressive that it's ruined part of the experience of rowing my own gears.
    I would still opt for manual on most cars with torque-converter automatic alternatives, but the PDK makes it a tough decision.

      @meni2410 8 лет назад

      On the contrary, I made the opposite mistake. I got an M4 automatic after driving stick all my life. So many people tried to convince me it is better, including RUclips videos, friends with autos etc. Sorry, drove the Ferrari F12 automatic gearbox, drove the 911, driving the M4 right now - and it is simply not as fun as manual. I made a mistake buying automatic, but not a terrible mistake as it is pretty decent, but my next car (and hopefully all my future cars) will be manual.

    Nice vid, Joe. I like the car progression! I have always driven manuals, as I am now with my DD Civic and weekend Boxster (don't sleep on it), but respect there are many reasons to go PDK. I just can never give up the three pedal immersed experience of driving. Save the manuals!

      +grc0456 I hear you! I feel like a I am betraying my roots by going with an automatic. I really do hope car manufacturers keep making manuals. The new, 500 hp, 911R is a manual and that is a great statement from Porsche produce a car to satisfy their vocal manual enthusiasts with such a powerful iteration of the car. Having said all that, the PDK is pretty awesome.

    I appreciate your video. I currently own a 997.1 manual (that i adore). I too have mixed feelings about the pdk transmission from Porsche. I drive my car on week-ends and take it to track days (4-5 times a year). Driving on the streets i would terribly miss the manual gearbox. On the track however, my limited skills at heel toeing limit my performance potential. I do plan to move up to a 991 eventually so the PDK vs manual is an active debate for me. The one thing you didn't mention, and I think this will keep me towards the stick side of the debate, is that with the right options Porsche offers "rev matching" in the 991 manual gear box. I think that combination will win me over. Total engagement and no damaging the gear box linkage. Let me know what you think.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  9 лет назад

      +Antoine Pageau Yes, the rev matching feature in the manual 991 is a really nice feature. I believe it is engaged when you press the sports plus button. I test drove a 991 Carrera S with a manual and I liked that the engine blips automatically between shifts. Nice. I find that with the PDK and driving spiritedly, I am a better driver. I focus more on my line, especially in tight switchbacks, with a PDK equipped car. I am faster. But if you want total driver involvement, I would say go manual.

  • @1PITIFULDUDE
    @1PITIFULDUDE 7 лет назад

    When you get use to shifting PDK manually, you get the best of both worlds. Make an effort to use manual mode and in a short time, you will regain that drive engagement.

    Wondering if there's any discomfort?

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  7 лет назад

      No discomfort at all. I like the tachometer in red. It's arguably the most important dial so I like that it stands out. I have seen some people spec all the dials red and for me that is too much red. That's just my opinion but to each their own.

    Imho, 50% of fun in driving a sports car is shifting your own gears with a manual shifter, blipping the gas for a downshift and heel and toeing when entering a sharp turn. A manual for a sports car and an automatic for a commuter for me.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  9 лет назад +1

      +AmineGhostDog There really isn't a bad decision here between manual and PDK. The PDK is so good because the gear changes are so fast. On the flip side, the feel of the gear changes of the manual is also really good. Having said that, I am happy with my choice of the PDK. As a daily driver the PDK will be smooth and easy in traffic.

    Thank you for your video ! I was like you, I always had manual cars.
    I've tried many automatic and even S Tronic, DKG cars and I didn't like the behavior of this gearboxes.
    I always thought I'd be a forever manual gearbox user.
    But I had chance to test a 991.1 Carrera 4S PDK, and like you say it was amazing.
    It is so responsive, so quick, you just use and don't think about it anymore, the PDK does exactly what you want it to do.
    And you feel gear change when you shift up full throttle.
    I still love manual transmissions, but PDK convinced me. My next car will be 991.1 Carrera S or 991.1 GTS like you.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  8 лет назад

      I was really skeptical about PDK. I read reviews in car magazines and they were positive. Then I test drove a 991.1 Carrera S with PDK and I was really impressed. It was so responsive and the gear changes were so fast. You can control the shifts yourself, of course, and that's great. Even in automatic, set to Sports or Sports Plus, the PDK always picks the right gear. I would say that Sports Plus is more for track/autocross use though. Sports is better on the road. So I am really happy with my GTS with PDK. Like you, I still love manual transmissions. I acknowledge that there is pleasure in rowing the gears yourself, getting it right. That is very satisfying. But I do not regret my PDK purchase. If I were you, I would test drive both PDK AND manual 911s and take your time before deciding.

    As a lifelong manual driver myself, I think I'd have to stick with a manual in a car like this. As slick as the PDK is, I don't think I could give up rowing my own, especially knowing how good Porsche manuals are. That said, the PDK is obviously an amazing piece of engineering and there's no way I'd fault anyone for choosing it over the manual. It's all about personal preference...no right or wrong choice.

      @Joe_Hutchinson  7 лет назад

      Hmmm, just as a coincidence, I was just chatting about this with my wife this past weekend. I think I may do a video about this. I have mixed feelings about the decision. I love my car, PDK and all, but on occasion I do miss driving a manual. I can't say I regret the decision to go PDK because I am happy with with the performance of my car. Right now my thinking is, and I could change my mind tomorrow, if someone is deciding between a PDK vs a manual and that person is truly on the fence, I would advise that they get the manual. Simply because the manual is becoming a rarity and it forces a driving enthusiast to be more engaged. Do I regret getting the PDK? No. I am still quite happy with my spec. I miss rowing the gears myself sometimes. Other times I don't even think about it.

  • @hairyaardvark

    Hmmm. Thanks for the vid. Actually I have to say you do sound like you regret the choice of PDK just a little. I've just ordered a manual GTS. is the gts worth it ? Its definetly far from gt3. Not sure you feel those 30hp difference vs carrera s

    • @Stephen981cs
      @Stephen981cs 8 лет назад +1

      For now it's the best option 911 if you want a MT. Far from a gt3 which you can probably get for another 20k. But that's still another 20k and there's really no need for a gt3 unless you're going to track the car. But, personally I think all Porsches should be taken to the track :) you also get better value with the GTS vs optioning up a standard carrera S to the same spec.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  8 лет назад

      +Stephen I second your answer. All of your points are good. Believe me, a 400 hp Carrera S 2015 is a great car. Fast and fun. But I like the extras that come with the GTS that give it just a bit more of a sporting edge. And those extras cost dearly on an optioned up Carrera S. Also, I didn't track my previous 911, and I'm not sure if or when I will track this GTS, so the GT3 would have been overkill for me.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization 8 лет назад

      +Stephen You cannot order a GT3 since autumn 2014 - it is not an option, because there is no such thing any more. If you buy pre-owned you have to pay 50% above retail price or more.

    • @Stephen981cs
      @Stephen981cs 8 лет назад

      +Baerchenization True, but I wonder if you can still order this GTS at this price point. I can't imagine for much longer. The 991.2 GTS will certainly be right around the corner. When you were buying GT3s brand new, you could easily get them without any mark up so it really was a consideration when compared to the GTS. There will be a 991.2 GT3 as well coming soon. Manual is reported to also be an option.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson

      Yes, it has the start/stop feature. When you hit the sport or sport plus button, it disables that feature. Or, even in regular mode, you can disable that feature. When I am just driving around town I leave it on, I am so used to it now. And when I want to have fun I usually have it in sport which disables the start/stop anyway.

    If you want the best technology to help aid your driving will your next sports car drive without any input from you? I don't see how you can go from shifting yourself to a computer because it's faster

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  8 лет назад

      Good point. But technology has been making sports cars faster in many ways beyond the transmission. Better technology has yielded much higher horsepower and torque outputs than 10 years ago. Advancements in suspension design and things like torque vectoring enable the driver to go faster and safer. I have no fear of technology. I embrace what it has done to make sports cars faster and more enjoyable to drive.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  8 лет назад

      Not to mention new materials like the use of carbon fiber in structures and other lighter materials that make cars, well, lighter. All of this is due to technological advancements. And make cars faster, more nimble and better at handling.

    • @maxpowers3732
      @maxpowers3732 8 лет назад

      I agree about technology and better materials making sports cars faster and I'm completely fine with that. Better tires, lighter materials, and things that enhance drivers input and make driving more fun are all good things. I absolutely love cutting edge technology in a number of different things. My only problem is when you replace something enjoyable with a gadget. For example, I'm happy FPS games have advanced beyond Doom with all kinds of better graphics and new ones to control your characters, but I wouldn't want to just sit there and have a computer run through a single player level without being able to touch anything because the computer is more efficient. I have fun actually playing the game.
      With driving I want steering and brake feel and wouldn't to have autobraking replace my brake pedal with a and judgement about when and how hard to brake with sensors. I want to have fun actually driving the car with my inputs and if the tech like rear steering or advanced suspensions help that's great. I just don't think you want to be obsessed with lap times over the feel and actual enjoyment of driving the car you spend your hard earned $ on because ultimately and autonomous electric car with no sound or feel will probably be faster than you could ever be .

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  8 лет назад

      You know what, I agree with you. As you know, I am all for tech to make cars perform better but I wouldn't want the car to take over my feel for the drive, my instincts for driving, my input while driving. So I get what you are saying. Although I now have a PDK, I loved driving with a manual. I admit, the PDK does take away some of the "dance" with the vehicle. The dance of using three pedals and shifting and getting that all right. It's fun. But I wouldn't say using PDK is getting too close to autonomous driving though. It is simpler, but not autonomous.

    • @godsaveamerica2611
      @godsaveamerica2611 8 лет назад

      I agree with Joe's answer that electronic shifting does not make your car autonomous. And that seems to be the only real argument manual drivers have against automatics, an argument based on a false premise.
      Hypothetically, If current manuals and torque converter automatics were introduced at the same time when cars were introduced (containing the same number of gears M6/A6). Having never driven a manual beforehand, the vast majority would choose automatic. A small minority would choose the manual, not because they feel more engaged or whatever but because the manual version would be faster and the better choice for racing.
      If the torque converter automatic then increased in the number of gears, say from 6 to 8 similar to the 8-speed in the Dodge Challenger 392. Then the speed advantage of the manual would disappear and even more people would choose the automatic. Manuals might still hold an advantage on a road course.
      If then, you Introduce paddle shifters or manual shifting to automatics, provided they're relatively responsive, everyone at this point would choose the 8-speed automatic with manual shift option over the M6.
      Introduce PDK and manuals would cease to exists, except only as a novelty.
      I drove a manual for a good part of my highschool and college years. Would I think about buying one now? Only if the clutch and shifter felt right and it was the faster of the available transmissions, then I would consider it. Would I pass over a PDK for a manual? Hell no!

    I think if you're getting a 911 as your daily driver then defiantly get a PDK. But if you get one as your second car then get the manual.

    I curious as to why you have no front plate if your car is registered in NYS? Secondly, did the dealer install the headlights? My car is black and I was thinking about doing the same. Best of luck with your GTS.

      You are supposed to have a front plate. But some Porsche and other car owners chose to go without a front plate. Do this at your own risk though. Yes, dealership installed the front headlamps. They also adjusted the beam to fine to the throw of light per my request.

      +sauberbeast I haven't used the cruise control feature at all, honestly. What convinced me was the speed of the shifts and how smart the PDK is about picking the right gear. I was impressed.

    Hello again Joe, still waiting on my manual GTS.....Just wondering a few of things. Do others want to race you much? are you leery of parking it anywhere? and how are the reactions from those around you, do you get more thumbs up then the middle finger from driving a Porsche? This will be my first REALLY, REALLY nice car so...........?? Thanks.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  9 лет назад +2

      +Gordon Schwartz Let me start with your last question first. The reaction is very, very positive. People openly say "nice car." People take pictures of it. A little boy asked his dad if they can get a car like that and the dad joked that he has to pay for the kid's college first and was kind about it. People are very nice.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  9 лет назад +2

      +Gordon Schwartz As far as race challenges, yes, occasionally while on the highway/freeway I get challenges but I don't pay them much mind, depending on my mood. I never engage when my wife is in the car. I don't get challenges at stop lights though. Some folks on the highway slow down/speed up to take a closer look. I get thumbs up when they pass. So far, folks are nice. Am I leery of parking it in some places? I am very paranoid about door dings so on parking lots I tend to park far away from entrances so that there are fewer cars around. At times i drive the car to a train station municipal parking lot and leave it there all day while I am at work. So far, so good. Fingers crossed. Hopefully I am not jinxing myself here. I go to a barber in a not so great part of town and street park it. Fingers crossed there. But so far so good.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  9 лет назад +1

      +Gordon Schwartz Although I really am paranoid about door dings, scraping front lip on driveways (be careful, that front lip really protrudes) and stuff like that, the car is built to be used. Yes, I like to keep it clean and take precautions, it is built to be driven. You should enjoy it. Don't let the world prevent you from enjoying this great machine.

      +Joe Hutchinson I plan on taking it out once in a while during the winter, may even try some snow with it since it will be the awd model. May take it to a near by race track (Calabogie) just to see what I and it can do legally! After all I'm not getting any younger @ 58..............LOL

      Gordon Schwartz Getting a GTS on the track is a dream of mine. I'll have to realize that dream sometime. Not sure when. Snow!?! Not for me. But if you drive it in cold conditions, get winter tires. I plan to get them installed soon. Winter rubber performs better in colder temperatures due to the rubber compound.

    You really missed the boat Joe, the 7 speed manual is awesome and how can you drive a sports car with automatic? God its so ridiculous that manuals are going away in sports cars. There is almost none left and without a manual, you have zero interplay with the car. In a sports car, that is a crime. Your just pointing a car without a manual. I feel very sorry for people who drive sports cars with zero interaction. Your have missed the best and most cherished part of any sports car.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson

      Hi Mark, I have enjoyed your comments. I believe I mentioned in the video that I have had a manual transmission car for all of my driving life. From my first Honda Civic up to my previous 911, a 997.2 Carrera S. I test drove the PDK and it was pretty amazing. I never thought I would own an automatic, but this time I took the plunge.
      Now I have lived with the PDK for two years. Do I regret NOT getting a manual? I can't say I regret it, but I totally get the enjoyment that comes from manually shifting. Getting that right is so satisfying and fun. Believe me, I know. I don't have that "dance" anymore. But this car is still loads of fun and I am a faster driver with the PDK.
      Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!!

      I have driven the new PDK's Joe and once again I find that they eliminate the real skill of interacting with a car. You are basically a pointer and not much more, BORING!! I do enjoy your video's and keep up the good work. We can disagree on a friendly basis. For me this has very little to do with how fast you can shift or really taking .2 seconds off the 0-60 time. Its about creating a symbiotic relationship with your car. Its about developing the skill to shift that car at the perfect time to create that perfect interaction with your car. YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO DO THAT WITH A PDK. That to me is the true essence of being one with your car. One thing we both know and agree on Joe is that the 991's are amazing cars to drive

    I bet you miss having a manual transmission.
    Be honest.
    If you're not using the car as a daily driver, not getting caught in traffic and only use it for fun, why not get the manual?

    • @SketchRC
      @SketchRC 8 лет назад +1

      Well, when you're selling a used PDK, the buyer knows for a fact that the engine has never been over-revved and that the clutches haven't seen excessive wear (by the computer's auto-blips), so the car retains more of its value. PDK cars also have the option of PAS, an active safety system that applies the brakes if it thinks you're going to crash. The clutch pedal on the manual 911 is also pretty stiff, which turns some people off. It's pretty much just a personal choice. All that being said, I'd still rather have the manual, but I don't fault people for buying the PDK.

    • @SloanZurnToto
      @SloanZurnToto 8 лет назад

      +MrBorisuri Perhaps so. I also remember that people felt that the only true Porsche was the 911. But driving the Boxster shows you that it is a true Porsche as well. It handles fantastically. I had a 2001 model year, and it was not the fastest car from 0-60, but the way you can string together corners was truly enjoyable for me, the driver. You can carry so much speed through the turns. It was great.
