These guys were perfectionists in the studio. They spent a lot of time trying to get the perfect lead guitar part. They rejected several offerings from top musicians until they arrived at what you hear. It's hard to find a bad song with these guys.

Two things: that bass line is NUTS, and the backing vocals by Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers are probably the most recognizable harmonies in rock music. By that I mean you hear it and you’re like hey, that’s Michael McDonald! Lol

Holy cow man are you gonna totally dig the Dan. Peg is quite possibly the smoothest groove ever. Really hone in on Chuck Rainey's bass it's phenomenal! A must watch is the Aja documentary with Donald Fagan and Walter Becker breaking down each song. How Rainey kinda went a little rogue laying down this bass line and how they couldn't find someone to really get the perfect solo until Mr Jay Graydon just nailed it on the first take(if I remember correctly)! Aja(the whole album) just oozes with musical perfection!

Song Recs (though you can't go wrong with any of them):
    -Do It Again
    -Hey Nineteen
    -Deacon Blues
Also, I'm so glad that (it seems) your audio troubles are gone. Imagine blasting this in your car. Nostalgia for a time we never knew, right there. I've been a Steely Dan fan since first hearing Do It Again on Guitar Hero III, and I've never looked back. Intricate, complex, textured, it's part of the rotation that fuels my writing process.

      -here at the western world
      -your gold teeth
      -night by night
      -Haitian divorce
      -sign in stranger
      -king of the world

Have fun deep diving down that rabbit hole! Great sophisticated stuff , can't go wrong with the entire Aja album. Like others have said, "FM" is a good one, "Black Cow", "Do It Again", "....great jazz harmonies in a rock/blues format. These guys knew their music theory and composition! "Josie" has one of the most interesting and uniquely composed intros in pop/rock and is discussed in music schools like Berkelee (per Rick Beato's channel).

As a West Virginia girl, I grew up on country music. When I was about 13 (1974), I "discovered" Steely Dan. The first song I ever heard by them was Rikki Don't Lose That Number and I was HOOKED. I was in my mid-20s when I first heard Bodhisattva and was even more blown away. (It came out in 1973 but somehow I missed it.) Here's a list of my favorites besides the two just mentioned (not in any particular order): Hey Nineteen (the beginning lick!), Black Cow, FM, Reelin' in the Years, Dirty Work, Do It Again, Josie, Deacon Blues, Kid Charlemagne, Babylon Sisters, Any Major Dude Will Tell You, Don't Take Me Alive. ENJOY!

It's so much fun watching younger people discovering great music that we grew up listening to. I may be biased but there's not a lot of new music out there that excites me anymore. Sure there are a few new artists but not many. And when you've been listening to music for forty or fifty years it's hard to be surprised. You know where they are going, you've heard it before. Enjoy your trip young man.

They are amazing. You can here Michal McDonald of the Doobie Brothers doing back round vocals on this song before he became famous. They were notorious perfectionists and difficult to work for, but the end result was proof of their genius. They have a live album called "Live in America" that covers all the best songs. The band is so tight if you were to remove the crowd noise you would swear this was done in a studio. I would highly recommend this version of 'Aja' for the outstanding drum work.

When real musicians get off work, they listen to Steely Dan.
S.D is 2 guys, and a recording band of different hired musical hitmen for different recordings. The best of the best of the best.
Recommendation: You know how good of a guitarist Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin is? His favorite guitar solo is from Steely Dan’s “Reelin in the Years”, guitar played by Elliott Randall.

I like a song that Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen did in 1982 as a solo artist. It was called "I.G.Y" (International Geophysical Year) and it was from his solo album "The Night Fly" and the album was based on his growing up in the 1950s.
I.G.Y.(International Geophysical Year). This song was from Donald Fagen's 1982 album "The Nightfly" and it was based on his growing up in the 1950s. The Year 1955 was classified as the International Geophysical Year which lasted from July 1,1957 to December 31, 1958.This period of time refers to an international science project that was going on at the time.

Glad you finally got here. Thing to know about Steely Dan is that they were more of a concept than a group. Their first album was with pretty much the same band, but after that they decided they could do better if they brought in some of the world's best studio musicians to play parts specifically how they wanted them. That's why basically none of their songs sound anything alike. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are the two principle guys and founders of the band. They were basically their own genre of music. Kid Charlemagne, Black Cow, Do it Again, Reeling in the Years, are just a few of the many, many amazing songs they put out. You could basically pick any song off that compilation you have there and you can't go wrong. They barely have a stinker in their entire catalog. Peg is from the Aja album, and you should do that entire album, every song is fantastic. Danathon needs to be done!!!

I agree Kid Charlemagne is a great song.. Here is the history, taken from Wikipedia! “Kid Charlemagne” tells the story of the rise and fall of a San Francisco drug manufacturer. In a 2000 online chat with the BBC, Becker revealed that the lyrics were based on Owsley Stanley, a famous LSD chemist of the 1960s known professionally as Bear. “I would say it was very loosely inspired by a character named Owsley,” said Becker. “He was a well-known psychedelic chef of the day.”
With the lyric, “You’d go to LA on a dare and you’d go it alone,” Becker and Fagen reference a trip Owsley made as described in Ken Kesey’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Owsley moved to Los Angeles from Berkeley to mass-produce LSD in 1965.
The final verse of “Kid Charlemagne” describes Owsley’s eventual 1967 bust when he was arrested after his car reportedly ran out of gas."

You got it bro! Steely Dan is the best group ever and it’s not even close IMO. They don’t have a bad song or album. Literally everything they made was/ is a gem, they never phoned it in. They’re just a vibe that never gets old especially cause every song is so unique. Enjoy!
Since you like Peg so much you should check out Black Cow, Hey Nineteen, or maybe even Babylon Sisters next.

Just some info on "the band" Steely Dan. Its basically just two guys - Walter Becker (died in 2017) and Donald Fagan - still living and still making music. The other players were all studio musicians. Some of them were used on more than a few of the songs like Bernard (Pretty) Purdie - a uniquely talented drummer. I don't know if any two of their songs had all the same players. But Purdie was on many of them. Its hard to nail Steely Dan down as a certain genre - I think of them as a Jazz fusion, pop, rock concept band. But like I said it really is just the two guys: Walter and Donald.I don't know if I can suggest any of their songs that others haven't already mentioned but here's one - "My Old School" - like all of their songs its just a great song and it tells a little story. Check it out.

That was so fun. Love to see you dance and enjoy. I would love to see you listen to a song from a lady I Iove. Actually it's by her and Dave Stewart. Would you react to the Eurythmics song I Need a Man? Its gotta be the video! If you can do a twofer, the same character in that video reappears in their song "Savage" (same album). Same dress, but the lady is found by the camera in a wholly different mood. You get to know her personna more deeply. Trust me!! Both at once would be so great.
