    The arrangements, the engineering........not to mention the sheer musicianship - Steely Dan is next level. Jazz and rock fused into a pop-sounding blend but with layers upon layers of sophistication. You can pick almost ANY song off ANY of their albums and it'll be a banger.

      I have the DVD about the making of the Aja album that "Peg" is on. Donald and Walter, along with the studio musicians & sound engineers on the project go into quite a bit of detail about what went into making the album!!! It's fascinating for any music lover that appreciates great compositions and musicianship!!!
      I also have Donald Fagan's "Concepts for Jazz/Rock Piano" DVD on which he goes thru the concepts and chords he used for some songs of Steely Dan and from his solo projects!!!

    The Steely Dan rabbit hole is super deep. You can’t go wrong picking a song. They are legends in the music world, the saying goes that Steely Dan is your favorite band’s favorite band, that’s how influential and amazing they are! From their radio friendly bangers like Reelin In the Years, Josie, FM, or Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, to their musical epics like Aja or Black Cow (which was sampled by Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz in Deja Vu), their catalog is amazing from top to bottom.

    Steely Dan have got so many great songs, they were a real unique group comprised of two main guys Donald Fagen and Walter Becker and a bunch of rotating session musicians. You might want to check out Do It Again next, it's one of their more popular songs but it's a great song nonetheless. Also, don't know if you heard him but they got Michael Mcdonald singing in the background on this track (you heard him as the lead singer for the Doobie Brothers on What A Fool Believes).

    • @jennhurl
      @jennhurl 2 года назад +3

      🙋🏼‍♀️I caught it! Michael's voice is so recognizable it's hard to miss. However, they've only heard one song by him so I bet it's still hard to pick out. Hopefully, they will do more MM songs. I like "I Keep Forgettin'", "Minute By Minute", & "Sweet Freedom". Do you have any suggestions?

      I have the DVD about the making of the Aja album that "Peg" is on, and Michael McDonald talks about the intricacies involved in layering his vocals for the song. Check out the RUclips video of the "Peg" segment of the DVD!!! They also went thru 5 or 6 or 7 guitarists (they couldn't remember exactly how many) to get the guitar solo they were looking for on "Peg"!!! The DVD shows them in the studio bringing up guitar tracks they didn't use....and you can see why!!! Donald and Walter were very particular about getting exactly what they wanted for their songs. Some thought they were anal about it but they knew what they wanted and wouldn't settle for less....and I for one, loved 'em for it!!!

    First and foremost, I encourage you to check out De La Soul's song, "Eye Know", from their 1989 debut album 3 Feet High & Rising. They sample this song pretty heavily; in fact if you like this jam you'll like that tune for sure. It's the same album that has their smash hit, "Me, Myself, and I", and which is also great, though I do prefer "Eye Know."
    Second... Something I love about Steely Dan is they offer something for everyone. Smooth vocals, excellent musicianship, and outstanding production--even if one of those doesn't appeal to a listener, another should. For example, I'm not as crazy about Donald Fagen's voice as other fans of the band. I don't dislike it; I can fully appreciate it for the level of expertise he has with it, but it's probably my least favorite thing about Steely Dan. But the music the band makes, as you've just heard, is absolutely incredible. I could hang out in the pockets these guys create all day and just have a blast. The technical aspect of their albums is also amazing; Fagen's famed perfectionist ways certainly show up in the studio. As for their outstanding and seemingly effortless groove, I'll just say there is a reason they're one of the most sampled bands in all of hip-hop, with over three dozen songs sampled in well over 100 songs.

    Steely Dan is one of the most unique bands in modern music. In my top 5 picks of favorite bands. You oughta start out with their earlier stuff and work your way up to appreciate their sound. "Do it again" would probably be a good one. They have so many great songs, on every album, that it's very hard to pick one. Some of their deep cuts are as good as their hits.

    My old man used to geek out over Steely Dan when I was a wee boy.
    I’d cringe listening to him singing along and watching him dance.
    He took me to see them in Glasgow, must have been 95/96!
    It’s only after i revisited them as an adult I can appreciate that Becker and Fagan are musical geniuses. Timeless intricate layers of gold!
    Big up Steely Dan 😎

    Donald Fagen And Walter Becker (two outstanding musicians in their own right), gathered the best musical talent available from the incomparable Chuck Rainey on Bass ( look him up) from having at least 8 guitarists do the solo finally picking Jay Schrader for the solo you hear on this song. Michael McDonald who played with the Doobie Brothers and went on to a very successful career did the background vocals for this song. He remarked how Fagen and Becker wanted him to sing three parts, three different notes forming a chord and he remarked how long it took to do it. Steely Dan-some of the best musicians of the times assembled to play some of the best composed and arranged music of the time. Maybe for all time.

    You got good instincts for this bro. Letting your ears dance around in the mix to pick up the different instruments and what direction you're hearing them from etc. Not everyone picks up on that kind of stuff their first listen through. Good stuff. And Steely Dan were masters at production, and this album in particular is pretty much flawlessly produced. For a long time people used to use it to test the quality of stereo systems. You really can't go wrong with anything off of this album, Aja.
