EDIT (This is a great tutorial) I want to add to this to say that the volume dial on the channel rack and the fader on the mixer add and remove gain in exactly the same way. This was talked about in the video. The only difference is that the channel rack volume is pre effects and the mixer fader is post effects gain. There is a lot of nonsense going around that the channel rack volume is a "pre amp" and that it sounds different to the mixer gain. It isn't. If you add 5db with the channel rack and take away 5 dB on the mixer with no effects in you chain it will sound identical. A polarity cancellation test will confirm this. Furthermore, if you use a plugin like EQ2, it doesn't matter what volume you hit it at, low or high gives an identical result when you balance the level afterward, it's not the same as the "analog modelling" plugins that need the gain to be just right. Hope that helps
Personally haven’t seen that info going around anywhere but thanks for adding in if some users believe that. I did mention what the channel rack volume does in the video, just as you said. Again, I’m sure you were speaking to people reading comments, thanks!

I have much respect for producers like you. I have been producing for couple of years now and I am growing every day. Thanks for all the knowledge💯

That’s an amazing video ! I’m watching all your mixing videos right now! I think I now understand the gain staging process, but to be clear : whenever I put a sample, let’s say a kick in the channel rack, my goal should be to use the knob in the rack to get some headroom in the mixer, then add some effects and always come back to the initial volume to prevent from clipping with the gain knob from the Param. Eq let’s say. Then if at the end of the mix I want to increase the volume, I can always use the headroom to adjust it. What about the samples (especially kicks) that already clip and go up to 3 dB without any effect ? If I turn down the knob in the channel rack, will it still be clipping ? Sorry for my probably unclear questions, I’m not a native ^^’ but keep it up it’s so informative ! Making a good beat isn’t that difficult for me, but making a good mix is ! Thanks again
Yo bro this really helps me mixing a clean beat do more tutorial on this kind of topic 🔥🔥 I mixed one of my beat while watching this tips and this really works thanks alot for sharing your knowledge.

Man u kill this. I think u can make video about master your beats. How volume u can get talk something about LUFS and all that stuff, we all will be appreciate. Peace man keep it up✌🏻
Keep it up bro loving all these gems!! I had a general idea about gain staging but this definitely cleared it up!! Still trying to figure out my levels like how loud my kick needs to be and stuff after the gain staging is all done like what db you feel
LifeStyleDidIt so leave a lot of head room though but make the kick the loudest element !! Because leaving head room means you can always bring that gain up in the master.. is there a good starting point for the kick db in terms of gain staging?? Or do you mix every beat different?? Does the kick on different beats hit at the same db?? I’m just tryna figure out some tips!!
NickyJay Beats that’s the best rule of thumb. You can always make it louder later! Honestly there is no go to spot, every mix is gonna be different so just leave headroom and mix away!
Do you gain stage velocity stems for a kick drum? Does Lifestyle set his velocity stems at a default or do you pull them all the way up? If you do gain stage velocity stems, which elements of the song do you gain stage through velocity stems? Drums only? Instruments? Basically, does the velocity stems change the character of the sample i.e. clipping or making it softer?
Christian Botello if it’s a ONE shot sample, velocity knobs are only gonna act as a volume knob. If you use a multi velocity VST or drum machine for example Superior Drummer, they have 20+ snare shots on one note so when you change the velocity , it triggers a different sample (softer hit, harder hit)
I really appreciate you sharing your mixing information. You have literally been the most influential music producer on RUclips by making my beats better.

hahaha i was doing exactly what he said "you must not do" and i was wondering why the hell was my mix collapsing when i try to make it loud with limiter :D :S , anyway thanks for this tutorial now i know a little bit more on whats what i just want to ask about the second point when you said after using processing on your sound (the EQ and Compressor) does this include all the other processing elements like saturation , overdrive , reverb , some glitch effects ect after using those kinds of things do you always have to lower the level if it was turned up , Thanks much appreciated
mi2ka mi2ka gain staging is keeping the same levels though out plugins so yes! Reverb and delay aren’t gonna really do this, those are more spacious effects

I feel like the longer the tutorial, the less information is retrieved simply because the amount of information being given is just too overwhelming and not simplified well enough to get the point across in a way that the viewer can apply it immediately! great job!

This is great, but most of the time you don't need it. Rappers don't care if your beat is gainstaged correctly or not. If it slaps it slaps. Plus nowdays quantity > quality. You'd much rather want to spend 5-10 minutes making a beat that works and make 6 of those in hour, than wasting an hour on making one beat that might not even make it. Just some thoughts for y'all.

Wow.... super underrated channel right here. Glad Simon Servida featured you. I already gainstage but still picked up some important nuggets.
Does anybody else render unmastered beats just to master them in an independent project file?
AFFE NOWU that’s a good strategy and many people do this in the industry if they are gonna self master. The reason is, it forces them to only have one file to master and not have the ability to mess with the mix anymore! It’s a brain game
thats exactly what i do, it forces me to accept the mix for what it is, and makes me recognize what i did in my mix for me to go back and fix.
I'm thinking of mastering my tracks in Reaper
@@LifeStyleDidIt I'm thinking it also helps if processing power is an issue.
I can hear my sounds again! Thank you, Sir.
lmao, i’ve been EQing wrong all this time...
Elite_Reflect 😂😂
One more quote to be written on paper - `louder is not better`! Damn, you are right
Your smile is precious no homo
Hell,
What about the rest of us! Dont be fuckin stingy with the compliments
Beats by Take It Low 😂😂😂💀
He really just showed us how to make everything clearer and better without clipping..... praise LifeStyle
thanks for watching!

this is gold. this just answered so many questions about gain staging i had in my mind especially when it came to the output knobs on plugins to keep that same gain level but still have it effect the sound. subbed and looking forward to more of your videos!
Thank you for the info and all, but that beat is nasty af
Nah but fr thanks
This is the best video on gain staging I've found. Thanks dude!
Welcome bro! Glad you liked it
Best Mixing / Master Tutorial ive ever seen no cap you explain everything so good thank you
I've been wondering for months about this... luckily i got a lot of stuff cleared out with this tutorial!!! Thanks fam, u made it all clear as hell. Cheers!
One of the best tutorial videos Ive ever watched. Thank you.
Gotta say, I’ve watched plenty of eq and compression videos, mixing and all that. One thing i never saw mentioned was lowering the gain after boosting frequencies but makes so much sense. Appreciate you. Please make more mixing and mastering tutorials my guy!
My God, Lifestyle just did it again!!! Man this was the most useful and different tutorial. Keep posting these kinds of videos. I really enjoyed it🙏🏻🔥🌊
Benjamin Guess thanks so much!
@@LifeStyleDidIt no problem man! Thank you this really helped and made THE MOST sense out of everything else that i skimmed over. Great Job!
This might be the best Mixing video I've seen. I've been trying to mix correctly for a while now and after watching this everything makes sense. Maybe other people have made videos like this but this one is the easiest to understand. Thank you LifeStyle.. For real.
aye! thank you for watching!
This is gold! More engineering tutorials like this.
Easy but really important things to know .
Keep up the good work!
As a music instructor, mixing music is a very different beast. I wondered why my mixes always sound like mud and I'm fighting clipping. You said louder sounds better by comparison. So true. I went thru and re-did my latest mix and this is gold. I feel like you shaved years off my learning curve. From mystery to "Oh, that makes sense" in less than 15 minutes. Thanks
