My cousin worked for Joan as an assistant in the 90’s. Joan was one of the kindest people you’d ever know. She went to the wall for so many people and thought nothing of it. Everything didn’t have to be a spectacle of her benevolence. That’s class!
I lost my father a month ago. It was truly the most difficult thing I’ve ever lived. Ever since I was a little kid I was “taught” to be afraid of so many things, but loosing my mom or dad was definitely a fear I was never told about. My relationship with my father was beautiful, we were friends and he’d tell me how proud he was of me and how much he loved me. I sadly lost him while I was living in a different country and was unable to say goodbye physically one last time as he passed in less than 2 days. Watching this interview has given me the strength to know I’ll someday talk about my magnificent father the way Melissa talks about Ms. Rivers. This was a beautiful interview, I started to watch JR when I was probably 15. I am a 25yo gay mexican man and she definitely had the type of humor I love!! God bless her and my father who are both in heaven enjoying eternity after all the beautiful ways they both touched the people they met. Thanks Melissa and Whoopi. Much love. xx
Every second of this was fantastic. Melissa is absolutely hilarious in her own right and is keeping her mother's legacy alive beautifully. We can all agree that the world is a worse place without Joan Rivers.
Poise? If she didn't scooch around in that chair, playing with her hair and tugging at her too tight blouse maybe. She is anything but poised in this interview.
Melissa your mother is the very best comedian. I was so blessed to meet you mother twice in the city. She is the kindest woman in the world. Much Love to you all. Brandi
What an insightful and fun interview- Thank you Melissa for continuing on this legacy of the funniest woman whose ever lived! Thanks 92nd Street Y for bringing us so many of these interviews from the people and personalities we love so much. Great seeing Whoopi as well. Love all three of these women represented here
I am so pleased to have seen Joan perform live in a small basement club in mid-town shortly before her untimely death. It was a last minute invite to a spur of the moment performance I was told. She used to do these to try out new material I heard. What a fabulous remembrance of her. I grew up watching Joan on Ed Sullivan and even though I didn't get all the jokes I adored her ever since. So, so sad to see her go. Melissa seems to have really stepped up to the mark - Mrs. Rosenberg would be proud.
I love Joan as well as a gay man its in my DNA I would say. But her homour is its strongest when she does self deprecating humor. other than self deprecating humor her jokes generally fall flat, go over peoples head or just fall short. She was ok over all at best. She was only good when she was hateful towards others or made fun of herself. She definitely was a one trick pony, and thats what is admirable about her. She was not very talented and yet her strong worth ethic propelled her through out all these years. The Jews have always been able to stay on top some how. I wish all the other races would be as smart as the jews. With the exception of middle America that is just a lost cause. Fucking your cousins and then judging others makes no sense at all. What makes no sense to me at all are African Americans that are religious through Christianity. These black people are trying to be closer to god by reading the bible when in reality the Whites are the ones that forced them jesus down their throats during slavery and yet they still hold on to their god?!! Why can't people think for them selves and look stuff up. You will be depressed no matter what, why not be depressed by the cause of knowing too much and being smart.
Melissa, I cant believe I found this so randomly. I lost my mother 2 years ago as well. I've been through the same thing. No one will understand the pain until they have to go through with it.
This is my very favorite interview ever! I always enjoy Whoopie and Melissa is a credit to her parents. Two amazingly talented, honest ladies are so enjoyable to watch. This book is a must read for me. Thanks so much for sharing!
It was great to see Mellissa has reached that point where thinking about and talking about her mom is now a positive experience. It’s the final stage of grieving
My mom passed away 6 months before Joan passed and I’m still not at Melissa’s grieving stage. I can’t even look at my mother’s pictures without crying. I’m happy that Melissa is doing well. Nice girl.
Omg I would love to see and go to a comedy & comedians museum. It would be a hilarious experience. Please Melissa and Whoopi do this, the world needs that, especially in these dark days of decisiveness, comedy is good for the soul, and brings us together.
God bless Joan Rivers. This woman has inspired me for years to stand up to my parents and try to become a comedian. Fashion Police was always my guilty pleasure since the age of, like, 12 years old.
Ben S. Yeah that probably was my favorite show on television. It was just great how she said some things on that show that may have crossed the line and it was great she never cared.
I love Joan and her humor. She is missed at least by me. I watched your series Joan knows best and never missed an episode. Cracked me up totally. Bless you and Cooper. RIP Miss Joan. I'm sorry for your loss Melissa. Great interview and answers. Enjoyed the whole show
Wonderful to hear you speak about Joan with such pleasure. At the end of our lives … we are not dead. Our spirit lives on with help from the ones we have left behind . Celebrate the ones that have passes beyond the veil. Joan is an angel … I am grateful that I had the pleasure of being on this planet at the same time . See you in Heaven Joan . ❤️🙏❤️
I love Whoopi but she's intolerable on the View old people tend to have the hardest time letting opposing views air out their thoughts. Or maybe its part of her contract to come off as the angry black women on national television. Regardless, she is one thousand times better than Wendy Williams. Wendy Williams is a Vile creature, and the whites in power that gave her that show as a platform are just as satan like.
Joan Rivers always made me laugh my ass off with her totally brilliant off the wall jokes. What an incredible mind she had. I loved Joan's Heidi Abramowitz jokes. They would put me on the floor with laughter. She must have been proud of the intelligent, thoughtful and very attractive daughter ( Mel) that she raised. Whoopi, it was a great interview. Thank you.
Thank goodness Joan got rejected as a dramatic actress because we would have been DEPRIVED of the greatest stand-up comedian of all time! Adored and miss her humor after all these years! She kept me from ending it all several times in my down moments (no self-pity intended) and that was GREAT!! RIP!
How Ms. Melissa Rivers described the way her mother said that “An unattended hotel house keeping cart is a sign from God” as well as getting the alcohol beverages from the mini fridge and the ceasers palace towels & bath sheets made me laugh so hard I peed a little bit!! If you ever read this Woopie Goldberg &/or Melissa Rivers please know that I am going to be using this advice for the rest of my life while traveling. You may acknowledge that I have written this by replying or not, it’s up to you, but that’s the best advice I’ve heard in years.
Thank you for this video, it has been so refreshing, so joyous and so sad all at the same time. I am sorry that Joan is not with us anymore; such a loss.
I love Joan and Melissa. It's a rare talent I hope one day she'll get the recognition she deserved. It's sad that she had to go without it. She proved you can be funny, glamorous, smart & successful being a woman in a male dominated industry. A lot of people don't take the funny girls serious, and like to step on them because it's easy, she was unstoppable & never backed down.
You tube is Joan rivers Museum. This is where we come to appreciate all her work. we dont need a building with her outfits on a dummy or her shoes in glass cabinets. The great thing is she was so prolific that she left behind so much footage to enjoy. She loved doing talk shows & wasnt picky about just doing the big ones.
I like Melissa Rivers. She is down-to-earth. She's has a great sense of humor! I really didn't know her that well -- other than the jokes, from others. She's pretty damn nice, great personality, and, a great sense of humor. My perspective has certainly changed. Couldn't have picked a greater person (Whoopie Goldberg.) to have done this interview. Joan was one funny women. Queen of comedy!! Hell, King too!! You're truly missed, Joan!! God Bless her. I know you're entertaining, all those comedians, gone before you. Hopefully you're with your husband. I know you talked. I'd like to have been a fly on a cloud!! Love ya, Joan!! 😂😉😆😘💙💚💛💜💖👍👏👏👏✌
I was such a huge fan of J.R'S and what's really funny to me is my Father was a real piece of work as far as his views on things ( I'll leave it at that ) but as much as a hard-assed/nosed man he was when it came to many things, he was a huge fan of Joan's? he might've never admitted it to most people but I remember many times of him just having a really deep belly laugh at her jokes or stories while hosting the tonight show or a guest on another show, which for him wasn't an easy task to achieve...She was and will always be a true gift and the world will never be the same without her fearless and outrageous ability to make people laugh and smile!
I was having such a blast laughing up until the end with the note on the bear (“Okay Joan, this isn’t funny. Time to get up.”) and now I’m crying. Great post!
Joan stated many times she thought Trump would make a great president and she also said she doesn’t want to be associated with feminism! She said if you work hard you can get what you want. No matter if you’re male or female. Melissa is playing safe here. If whoopi had asked the same questions directly to Joan right now the two would’ve been fighting. Just like whoopi clashed with Jeanine Pirro.
I do think Melissa may have told the truth because Joan wouldn't have agreed with a lot of Trumps views. The president statement might have been said earlier, without her knowing all his beliefs and platforms; that's why Melissa said that Joan would've initially been on his team, but would've ultimately been a staunch supporter of Hillary.
Joan was very loyal person. She thanked trump for her comeback. She looked at he trump family like royalty. Mentioned this many times on the howard stern show. Melissa was definitely playing it safe.
Joan also suggested before that Hillary should be president (during Obama's second reelection campaign), so it's hard to say who she would support. It would probably come down to policies.
Fabulous interesting informative interview! Mellissa you are a star ⭐️ and you are a beautiful product of her life! So very comfortable on screen you would be a great talk show host!!
I've seen a lot of people be very nasty about Melissa and accuse her of riding her mom's coattails and whatnot, but I think they're failing to ignore what a massive personality Joan was-few people are that way, and Melissa certainly isn't. Joan wanted her to be part of her career, and I don't think she would have had it any other way. The payoff for Melissa is that she helped participate in her mother's legacy, which in turn has given her a very comfortable life. It's no different than kids working the family business really. I do think people are harshly critical of her where she doesn't deserve it. She seems like a down to earth, smart, nice person.
I think it's a little bit regarding how Joan was a monumental personality so it was easy to be overshadowed, but I also think it stems more from their past as red carpet personalities on E! and TV Guide. Joan went from being this very adored, respected albeit loud mouth and shocking comedian, late night host, and Emmy Award-winning daytime host right up there with Oprah and Phil Donahue to all of the sudden having to reinvent herself as this sideshow freak in a lot of ways. The red carpet on E! was a step up from public access television. It was a thankless job for entertainment news reporters, not iconic comedians, but Joan sensed that people had an interest in it so she was going to take the job and give it her all. She made it an event, but unfortunately contributed to a very negative aspect of our culture which sometimes would borderline on mean. It was going to be natural for people to associate Melissa as the "bitchy skinny loud mouth daugher" of insult comedian Joan Rivers. Watching them on their reality and watching Joan's documentary humanized them both so much to me and made me fall in love with them.
This was awesome! I got to see Joan Rivers @ Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine. The best comedy show I've seen. So thankful for the memories. Love you Joan RIP
A beautiful interview! Love Woopie! Love Joan and her daughter. She was so fortunate to have a mother like Joan. They did have fun times and no one will ever take away the beautiful memories they had!❤
No superficial, shallow or nasty comments from me. I really enjoyed this interview, Melissa was lovely and Whoopi was her usual fabulous self. From a big Joan River's fan.
Joan was just simply amazing !!! When she won the apprentice and went postal on the poker player it was true and priceless commentary .... classy lady for her entire life RIP joan
I've always liked Whoopi, Joan and Melissa. I've been wondering something for awhile, so please don't be upset that this is in these comments. I have a question for anyone who has an answer or may be able to share if they feel the same way. This in no way affects the way I feel about anyone. Some people, many people in many videos use swear words as naturally as any other word. There are so many appropriate words they could use in place of it. Did this come from TV. Are they swearing all over the TV these days? They didn't used to. Everyone feels differently and do have every right to use the words they choose. But I just wish they would understand that some people are sensitive to it and makes it hard to watch things they enjoy, and I do like Whoopi, Joan and Melissa like I said. For those who don't smoke may be able to compare it to trying to enjoy a good meal in a restaurant while they're surrounded by cigarette smoke. Some people can't because it makes them sick. My wish and I'm sure others as well, is that people use swearing while talking off camera. If I have to miss good videos because they choose to share those words with us, they have the right, maybe. It's just getting harder for those of us who are sensitive to it to find things to watch, and videos and TV should be able to be enjoyed by everyone. It is refreshing that Melissa is being honest. Not everyone is.

It is such a treat to hear Melissa as the story teller...we get a whole new perspective on Joan Rivers.
We really miss you Joan!
They’ll never be another Joan funniest women ever!! An she’s raised a fantastic daughter.. xxx
I agree with everything u had said!!
Melissa is just a darling. I can’t believe she’s there with stinky whoopie. I can’t wait to read Melissa’s book.
Melissa seems like she’d be such a down to earth, cool woman to be friends with. I loved this interview so much.
I love Whoopi Goldberg's soft spoken approach to this interview , very interesting stories .
W
I just have to say, Melissa has such poise and NATURAL class. I'm a HUGE fan of Joan and wish her nothing but genuine happiness.
That is a beautiful thing to say and acknowledge, Justin. Joan was… 🔥⚡️✨
I totally agree with you. She's got class.
Poise? If she didn't scooch around in that chair, playing with her hair and tugging at her too tight blouse maybe. She is anything but poised in this interview.
Yes, very classy and friendly.
This is an Excellent Interview!!!!! Melissa Rivers a Smart Lady!!!!
I know I'm super late watching this but my heart is so full. We miss you, Joan.
The index cards need to be digitized. Joan catalogued everything funny she ever thought of. I hope that gets shared in some form.
EXCELENT IDEA! JOAN WAS AN ICON. I WILL ALWAYS ADMIRED HER AND I WILL ALWAYS MISS HER.
I think that digitizing them would make the existence of the cards less fascinating.
Gustavo Cabanas She is an Icon ...
Mmm

Melissa your mother is the very best comedian. I was so blessed to meet you mother twice in the city.
She is the kindest woman in the world. Much Love to you all.
Brandi
I had the privilege to meet Joan Rivers. She changed my Life what a Beautiful soul. I will never forget what she said to me... "Keep being you" :)
Melissa may not be a comedian but she has a great and natural sense of humor.
She does have that, but somehow lacks the timing to make what she says funny.
KempireRadio
Yes I love her and she is fair to all
There is nothing funny about Mel Rivers. Never has been
Its built in

@@carlosgalvan2286 well that was a downward spiral!
Melissa! Such Poise, Grace, and Intelligence. And Whoopi! Rocks as always, creating a warm space for Special Sharing 💕
What a wonderful interview, well done both of you.

One year after your post I’m still wonder why?
I lost my mom when she was 48 my dad at 56 and best friend when he was 32 and after they pass you just make a point of remembering the good times
Omg I would love to see and go to a comedy & comedians museum. It would be a hilarious experience. Please Melissa and Whoopi do this, the world needs that, especially in these dark days of decisiveness, comedy is good for the soul, and brings us together.

The last line Melissa said, caught me so off line, I felt tears started rolling. I miss Joan.
I love Joan and her humor. She is missed at least by me. I watched your series Joan knows best and never missed an episode. Cracked me up totally. Bless you and Cooper. RIP Miss Joan. I'm sorry for your loss Melissa. Great interview and answers. Enjoyed the whole show
I saw Joan at my university many years ago, I so miss her.....thank you for sharing. X
Love this interview. I miss Joan.
Love Melissa Rivers. She is such a well adjusted lovely daughter of such a famous celeb
@mayson lee but basic is ok :-)
I guess I like her feet in those heels.
She made you laugh so hard your ribs hurt for days.
Can't believe it's been since 2014. Loved Joan.

You two made me cry the last moments!! We all miss Joan, forever adored!! A fan!
Such a great interview love Melissa sharing her stories about Joan. Miss Joan!! Always good to see Whoopi!
It's wonderful to see Whoopi doing this interview.
Whoopi is annoying as shit. When she talks about politics she is a complete imbecile
NONSENSE. Whoopi is TRUTH. The IMBECILE IS ILLOGICAL YOU.
I really believe she is fair! And sometimes she can get passionate about what she believes in, To bad sunny has to feel her wrath LOL! Poor sunny D
She'd be nice on a regular interview show.
I miss my Joan sooooooo much may you FOREVER REST IN PEACE 💛

Peace ha no peace for Joan probably a new planet 🌎
Joan Rivers always made me laugh my ass off with her totally brilliant off the wall jokes. What an incredible mind she had. I loved Joan's Heidi Abramowitz jokes. They would put me on the floor with laughter. She must have been proud of the intelligent, thoughtful and very attractive daughter ( Mel) that she raised. Whoopi, it was a great interview. Thank you.
The Heidi Abramowitz oeuvre was outstanding!
This was one of the BEST interviews I've EVER seen. Just EXCELLENT! BOTH interviewer & interviewee! A MASTER class in great interviews. :)
Thank goodness Joan got rejected as a dramatic actress because we would have been DEPRIVED of the greatest stand-up comedian of all time! Adored and miss her humor after all these years! "Maximalist"- I like it. I'm Impressed by MR - she comes across as down to earth.
She has no choice, astrologically she’s an Earth sign lol.
Melissa’s laugh at 9:21 sounds sooo much like Joan’s! I really miss Joan 😪❤️

What a really good interview. Whoopie did a great job with the questions and Melissa was awesome with her answers
I loved this. Thank you!
LuV Melissa, her Mom, and Whoopie..GREAT interview --articulate, smart, and Lovely @MelissaRivers
Wonderful. A fun trip. I did not even watch the Oscars. Just not the same without Joan.

What a wonderful hour with two talented and funny women, and looking over them the presence of that amazing lady.
I love the way she speaks the language. Its so clear. Feels like shes pronouncing every word properly and she's not lazy about it.
Malissa, you were lucky to have had such a close relationship with your mother, delight in that, because most people don't have that.
Melissa how do to stop looking at you without crying? Cause JOAN was my hero
I'm sure this time was cathartic too for Melissa.🕯
OMG ...the ending made me cry so hard...I miss her so much ...LOVE YOU MISS YOU JOAN!!!
I was having such a blast laughing up until the end with the note on the bear (“Okay Joan, this isn’t funny. Time to get up.”) and now I’m crying. Great post!

My regret is not seeing Joan in concert!
Great stories Melissa Rivers. I think Melissa Rivers looked great and was also a class act Bravo Melissa

It was going to be natural for people to associate Melissa as the "bitchy skinny loud mouth daugher" of insult comedian Joan Rivers. Watching them on their reality and watching Joan's documentary humanized them both so much to me and made me fall in love with them.
Yeah Joan was massive. It would of been hard to get around her as a child of hers I think.
Melissa really is delightful.
Yes, I love Whoopi and Melissa chemistry; great interview

Great interview! Love the touching moment at the end about the flowers and the bear.

Publish the Joke file in a book for everyone to read, use and enjoy now and in the future. Don't let it all be stored away.
Good interview
