Flying Standby Fail! How We Missed 7 Flights in One Day?!

  • In the interest of being upfront, this isn't a travel tips video. It's actually an epic travel fail video. I guess it was going to happen at some point. We just weren't prepared because most of the time we luck out and get to where we need to go flying standby (even if we sit at the airport all day). Moral to the story: don't try to fly standby during Spring Break. It will likely lead to a major airport fail and a nightmare day of jumping from gate to gate.
    In other news, we're thinking of doing this whole "showing up to the airport with no destination in mind" thing again. Let us know what destinations you recommend for us to try last minute!

    So this wasn't the most pleasant. What was your biggest travel fail?
    Also, what's there to do in Huntsville, Alabama? We gotta know...

      I was in Scotland in 2010 and totally missed my bus. They only go about every 2 hours, and I was in the middle of nowhere. I ended up hitching a ride to the next village.

      @@FamilyonStandby It was quite a day, as the rain was pouring so hard. My shoes and trousers got soaked through. In the UK it can rain like I've never seen anywhere else.

    My family has only ever missed one flight due to flying standby.
    It was during a summer season, we were trying to get HKG -> NRT or HKG -> NGO with CX. The first flight to NRT was full and the next one was 1.5 hours later. But we got boarding passes for the first flight to NGO, and flew there before changing to the bullet train to Tokyo.
    Another near miss was FUK -> HKG as the flight was overbooked, but we scored one from NGO. We got a domestic flight to NGO and stayed overnight there, and arrived in HKG an hour earlier than planned.
    And also DXB -> HKG during Christmas one year. The flights were really full and we were even trying our luck for another airline. But the passengers on my original flight were too busy celebrating (as there were a ton of no shows), we got on the first flight we were waiting!
    Always have a backup while flying standby!

    Could you go through security without a boarding pass? Because in Europe you usually need to have your boarding pass scanned to get to security.

    • @FamilyonStandby
      @FamilyonStandby  5 лет назад

      We get special boarding passes that say SBY instead of a seat number. Once you get through security, though, that boarding pass is worthless.

      @@FamilyonStandby Thanks! I never tried just jumping on a plane. Usually when I travel I plan at least 6 months ahead, unless it's for work. I started planning my Japan trip in January, and went in August. Though with my work I need to give at least a month's notice if I want to take time off. Or rather, my boss tells me when I can have time off, and I can take it if I want to.

      @@FamilyonStandby I guess in Europe you have so many places that you really need more than a day for. Sometimes now even a week is enough. Maybe the version here would be taking a bus. Though then things are too far.

      We love Google Flights. You can search by originating airport and price. Want to go somewhere for $100? Search for that parameter and see what you can find. You can score some amazing deals, almost all last second. It's the closest thing to flying standby.

    When traveling standby, how do you check bags or can you not?

    • @FamilyonStandby
      @FamilyonStandby  3 года назад +1

      You totally can, but it’s a risk. Bags always go. Non-revs do not always go. So gotta decide if you’re confident you’ll be joining your bags on vacation 🤣
