great stuff man. i've used linux for over a decade and fire up top at least a few times everyday (mostly to confirm that YES INDEED FIREFOX IS HOGGING CPU AGAIN) and never had any idea it was this configurable

is a "flavour" of linux.
basically linux is composed of many independent softwares, and to make a distro (short of distrubution) is to bundle all of it, configure it, create an installation program, many times adding branding, and package it all for distribution to the users.
