Matt Doyle’s performance in COMPANY is one of the most hilarious performances I’ve ever seen on a Broadway stage! He NEEDS to win a Tony this year!
I’m so so glad he just did
He just did🎉🎉🎉👏👏👏👏
"When I was auditioning in London, I couldn't find the person [to play Amy]. I also felt like this woman wasn't now, wasn't a very modern woman. So then I did a crazy thing - I asked a friend of mine, Jonathan Bailey... 'Would you mind just coming in and trying something for me? It's a bit crazy.' We worked for maybe an hour and a half, and it wasn't perfect, but I felt (gasp), this is exciting, there's a potential here. So I then immediately got on the email to Steve, and I said, 'Steve, you have to be sitting down. You have to be having a glass of wine in your hand. And take a deep breath, but I'm going to say something to you: I think possibly we should change Amy into a man.' And Steve's reply sums him up, really, as a collaborator. He basically said, 'Marianne, you need to be sitting down, you need to have a glass of wine in your hand, you need to take a deep breath: I think it's a great idea.'"
- Marianne Elliott on reimagining Amy as a man with friend Jonathan Bailey, The New York Times (December 1, 2021)
Probably Top 5 performances I've ever seen on Broadway.
He stole the show. Both times I went, the guy got more applause than Patti.
That's how good he was.
l love Tony Award winner Matt Doyle & am thrilled he's finally getting the recognition he deserves!!!
This version made me understand the attempted proposal from Bobby in a way I never did before - Bobby is asking Amy/Jamie for a marriage based on convenience instead of actual love, because Bobby doesn't understand the difference yet, but Amy/Jamie does. Adding the subtext of asking a gay man to have a convenient straight marriage made me understand that. And it's true whatever gender Amy/Jamie is played as.
Ok but are they going to release a soundtrack for this Broadway version? I really want it!!!!

Actually, “Cast Recording” & “Soundtrack” are both acceptable & valid references. So, you really don’t have to be such an ass to people asking a LEGITIMATE QUESTION!
@@randyseay4855 no need for the tude
Of course there will be a cast album silly.
@@musicnart4582 i don't know
The British version of the same production beat it to the punch
Matt Doyle was awesome. I never listened to Company before. If I did, my Spotify was probably playing random songs, and I didn't notice. Shame on me. I did, however, watch that Documentary Now episode of Co-Op that has a song influenced by Getting Married Today. When Matt was singing this song, I was just enjoying every moment of it, but I could also hear Alex Brightman's character singing about blowing a rail and shitting his pants. Still an awesome experience.
Tony Award Winner Matt Doyle 😭
HE WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! THIS WAS THE ENTIRE SHOW APART FROM PATTI!
I'll say it until I die, we could do so much with theatre if we were more flexible with gendered casting. It would open up so many casting possibilities, and add so many nuances for certain characters with a queer or genderbent element.
Actually, a number of lines have been changed. For example, "when I'm only being nice" was originally "like Eliza on the ice."
with enough talent, stories can be told and characters can be played by anyone of any gender, race, or background. he said himself the script hardly changed and it shouldn't! its the same story
Patti LuPone is a true actress, she has that absolute tabula rasa of a face, so you could paint basically any character on it. And I live her Joanne.
Patti casually being an activist
The genius of Sondheim.
Jonathan Bailey originated the role of Jamie in the London production of Company in 2018. Which you wouldn't know based on this documentary since (from what I've seen) they didn't mention the London production. If anyone is interested in seeing Jonathan singing "Not Getting Married Today", there is now a clip available; ruclips.net/video/vMAexaCpptc/видео.html
This is a brilliant performance. But in truth, there were multiple changes of lyrics from the original version.
Oh, this is perfect. Thank you
awesome !!!!
Hey is that Matt Doyle?
Is that Matt Doyle?
Is that....Matt Doyle?
I saw the show in New York. I wasn't a fan of gender bending Bobby at the time. In retrospect the show did hold up.
Is that?…Matt Doyle?
All due respect to Matt Doyle, but calling Not getting married the most challenging song in musical theater history is really presumptuous. What about And I’m Telling You, glitter and be gay, defying gravity…etc etc
I think lyrically it is one of the most challenging songs in MT history, And I am telling you Stamina wise, glitter and be gay vocally, and defying gravity vocally but as a belt.
Agreed, overstated. Just to mention a couple of Patti Lupone's own songs, among scores of others that are "juicier and more challenging": "Rose's Turn" from "Gypsy" (lyrics also by Sondheim) and "Here's to the Ladies Who Lunch" from "Company" as well. "Lunch" is certainly juicier and more challenging in interpretation, while slower, than "Not Getting Married."
Little behind the times. There's not much need to change this classic. How about writing something new that fits what is going on today?
Or better yet, Amy should have been a trans woman.
I guess we'll never get past this kind of stereotype
What stereotype would that be? Gay men afraid of marriage? People afraid of marriage? Nervous gays? No, we probably won't, lol.
Well, first they ruined “On A Clear Day You Can See Forever”, and now “Company”! NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE GAY!
Sincerely,
A GAY MAN DISGUSTED OVER THIS KIND OF CRAP!
The internalized homophobia is strong here
Not everything NEEDS to be but like... What if ppl WANT it to be? You know, as a treat
