I love the gender swap. It makes the story extra poignant, because women have this extra pressure on us to get married before it’s too late. Katrina’s Bobbie is full of anxiety, desperation, and avoidance. As a 40 year old woman who desperately wants to get married, I shared Bobbie’s tears as she sang “Being Alive.”
By the way, I loved the Himbo Flight Attendant.

This production is kinda what I want to see for more revivals of old shows.
I would love to see a genderswap or gay She Loves Me, or maybe Music Man, Light in the Piazza, etc.
I think what doubters and naysayers fail to see is that this has been a thing in other countries for years. In Japan they have an all-female theatre troupe called Takarazuka Revue, and they sometimes do Japanese translations of Western shows. And this theatre troupe has been around for over 100 years. So the idea of challenging gender in casting isn't new, it's not a "woke" thing, it's been happening for 100 years.

This gender swap is the reason why I opted for Wicked albeit company is my favorite musical.
    Become woke, go broke.

@@davidwilliamklak From the 22 shows that were on stage in fall 2022, it ranked 21st - second to last.
I opted for Wicked and I didn't regret it.

@@bluerisk uh huh, you opted for wicked, a show with 2 female leads), which is funny cuz it seems you can’t stand the idea of a woman being the lead in company. And probably can’t stand the idea that there’s now a gay couple in it lol. It’s not “going woke” (which btw is a term coined by black people that is now being weaponized and demeaned by white conservatives), it’s just modernizing the show. If the lead stayed as Robert, well it wouldn’t really work as well in a modern lens. Changing the role to Bobbie recontextualizes the lived experience of the character and how the idea of marriage and the pressures of getting married effects her. Stephen Sondheim himself worked on this production. You gonna try and say the creator himself was wrong?
