    Mike,
Having done food plots in SW WI for almost 20 years and made a lot of mistakes here is what we do:
    1. spray with RU and wait for 5-8 days
    2. fertilize with 200-400 lbs of Urea per acre for (radishes, brassicas, winter rye etc)
    3. disc and/or rototill (the ground will work up better with the vegetation dead)
    4. cultipack (to make sure seed is not planted to deep)
    5. broadcast seed
    6. cultipack again to insure good seed to soil contact
    7. wait and pray for a little rain

This is the way I plant all of my plots also... I have followed this exactly for many seasons, as long as Mother Nature helps a bit, the plots do very well with this method

If you have a big weed bed (let some weeds go to seed the previous year or it's your first year or two cultivating the field) a second application of RU after step 3 is advisable as well.

Hired a guy to lime it

Good morning, Mike and Melissa... I tend to forget how much rain the east recieves. Here in So. Ca., we've only recieved 5.5" since March of 2017... hence the wildfires. Not used to having to wait for things to dry out. It'll be a great food plot when finished.
Thanks for my morning video 😊

Mike, good looking spot for a food plot. You know your place better than anyone else, but my experience is that turnips don't do as well in shaded areas with wet soils, if there is adequate sunlight I would suggest alsike clover and rye, now is optimum time to plant both. We been having a little preview of fall this week in N.E. GA, especially in the mornings. Good luck!

Mike, RK should look into putting 12v actuators on the FEL quick attachment latches with a on/off switch in the cab/on the dashboard. This would allow you to attach/detach without getting out of the seat. Nice option or modification. Have a great birthday.

Winter oats work wonders down south for fall/winter food plots. I have a branch I leave every year that turns into a licking branch/scrape. That's not a small food plot, I have one about a third that size and one that's 7 acres. Bucks much prefer the small more secluded plot, I assume because thick brush and safety is near by. Looks like you are running the disc in low range, I have found running in B range on the first pass will turn the soil much better. You usually have plenty of traction on the first pass for higher speed. Try it out

Love food plotting and habitat improvements, maybe more than hunting? 😬 I mounted “Quick Fist Clamps from Amazon on both sides of the roof on my golf cart for pole saws, shovels, rakes, ax etc. works awesome. Have gun holders across the back, but long items catch branches on the trails. I can’t figure out how to load photos on here, will message them to you.

any chance you would disturb the soil with each of your implements including the rake and box blade in parallel strips in the food plot and broadcast seed over each strip? I am curious to see if there would be a significant difference in germination and weed suppression between the tiller, box blade and rake. I dont know of anyone else that has that many toys to do a comparison. You might be able to make the ultimate food plot implement comparison!

    Mike,
I’m new to your site and I’m enjoying your videos. I just got the RK55 w/ loader and box blade to managing 4 miles of ATV trails. I’m really interested in purchasing a Flail mower. Do you have experience with a Flail mower and what type do you recommend?
Most importantly, will you be doing a video soon using a Flail mower?

Really? You don't know? Those a licking branches and they rub their tarsal glands on their nose on them. That is a hot spot. I got an apple tree in my backyard I refuse to trim. I've had some great trailcam vids of bucks makeing scrapes there. set you camera on that spot.

    • @johngallagher2313
      @johngallagher2313 6 лет назад

The gland on the nose is correctly a pre orbital gland. The tarsal gland is on the back legs.

  • @bobanderson6656

You are wasting time and fuel mowing that. A heavier disc would serve you well. When in doubt, get a little more tractor than you think you need and you can then use heavier implements.
Weren't kidding about how wet it stays. Nice spot for a food plot just the same. I bet what you plant just jumps when it germinates.
