- Into the Revolutionary Realm of the Horten Flying Wing
The Horten Ho 229 was a revolutionary flying wing aircraft developed by German engineers Reimar and Walter Horten during World War II. Designed for speed, efficiency, and stealth, it was one of the first jet-powered aircraft of its kind, featuring a sleek, tailless design to minimize drag. Its innovative use of lightweight materials and two Junkers Jumo 004B turbojet engines gave it the potential to outrun most Allied fighters. However, the project faced numerous engineering challenges, and only a few prototypes were built before the war ended. Captured by American forces in 1945, the Ho 229 influenced future stealth aircraft, including the B-2 Spirit bomber.
