    My mom, rest her soul, gave me some great advice when I was young. A Civics teacher scared the crap (70's-cold war) out of me over the poss. of nuclear war. I lost sleep, couldn't eat, was really scared. I asked my mom how she made it thru WWII alone with Dad fighting overseas. She said, "You need to get ahold of yourself. You can't worry about what hasn't happened yet, you'll drive yourself crazy. Live each day as it comes. Those things may never happen."

    • @TheBioExplorer
      @TheBioExplorer 4 года назад +18

      I grew up as a military brat during the cold war too. My mom was older and had lived through the Great Depression. I never felt too much stress about it because gardens, reusing everything from butter dishes to aluminum foil & cooking on a budget was just part of my life. So while I'm cautiously watching current events I'm not freaked out by any means. People just need to educate themselves and calm the F down.

      I haven't heard that phrase, get ahold of yourself, in a very long time 💖 I used to hear it regularly in my family when people were upset about stuff. And it was said kindly to remind us that we can 'get ahold' of ourselves when we are getting excessive with worry or fear are upset. Thanks for your comment. It brought some nice memories back for me

      @@TheBioExplorer yep. My parents always gardened, canned, dried food. When Mom said we needed potatoes one of us would go to the crawlspace under the house (it was tall enough in places to crouch in) and bring up a bowl full of home grown potatoes. I didn't know we were poor until I was grown. I guess we really weren't. But that teacher...smh.

    I’m a full timer hunkered down in a snowbird park halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. It’s almost a ghost town with the Canadians having left. There are places to get food and supplies within a 20 minute drive but for the most part this is a low population area. That’s good for me since I have asthma and am 65 so considered a higher risk if I get the virus. Several good trails not far from me for solitary hikes and contemplation. Totally not my original plan. Was on my way to San Jose to visit friends and a flight to Honolulu. A little disappointed but I have faith the trip will happen when things calm down. Nine years on the road as a solo female and learned to write all my plans in jello.

    Regarding your Tiffin/Mercedes - IMHO - a Class C on a Ford E450 chassis is the ONLY way to go. My 2001 31' Class C is as easy and stress free to drive as my mini van, in fact, it actually rides better! The cost of the Sprinter chassis is outrageous, Mercedes service is an issue, but the main thing is you have a lot of weight (and height) on a very short wheel base. To add - I have been an RV'er for 20 years and have learned new things (especially the Highway Weather app)!! I enjoy your videos a lot, and enjoy your experiences as you encounter new things! Thanks for sharing!

      100% agree on the class c. We drove a 26 ft Ford E-350 Class C and it was a smooth ride and very stable on the road. Would never drive one of those high clearance, narrow wheel base type Class Bs.

    Robin, I have been a truck driver for 35 years and I have driven solo that whole time. Regarding backing your rig, take as much time and as many pull ups you need to get into your spot. I still screw up backing. Give me 40 acres and I can't back worth a darn, give me a
    9' foot wide slot and I will nail it (most times). It just takes practice.

    • @Pamela-ro8vh
      @Pamela-ro8vh 4 года назад +3

      Harriett Shiveley is there a trick to backing a short (28’) 5th wheel with a long bed? Even with my hands at the bottom of the steering wheel, the rv has a mind of its own. Lol

    • @harriettshiveley9935
      @harriettshiveley9935 4 года назад +7

      @@Pamela-ro8vh I have found that you need to make very slight moves with your steering wheel, put your hands where you feel most in control. Use your side mirrors. To keep yourself backing staight, if you see more of your trailer in your right mirror than your left, turn the steering wheel towards the right mirror and the trailer will start back left.( The reverse apllies when you see more of the trailer in the left mirror).
      Be aware of where the pivot point on your trailer is. Some trailer axles are in the center of the trailer, some farther back. Just takes practice.

    • @Pamela-ro8vh
      @Pamela-ro8vh 4 года назад +2

      I used to get lost in open space, but tight spaces also mean points of reference. But it wasn't until I drove flatbeds and tankers that I found my groove. Tip from a boss: steer the back, not the front. For some reason that stuck with me.

    Wow! Just the other day I was thinking that Mother Earth is needing to be healed, we have to be stopped from our activities to allow the healing. But the healing is necessary because we caused the damage and need time to realize what we have done and change our ways. I thought if I shared those thoughts people would think I am crazy. I am so happy to hear basically the same thing being said in the poem you read. Thank you.

    Robin, I so look forward to your videos on Sundays... I get a cuppa coffee with my favorite creamer, a slice of toast with my homemade blueberry jam... and turn off my phone.... your video on Sunday is MY TIME.... and it isn't negotiable.
    Thank you for your upbeat videos, your 'keeping it real and honest" , but kind.
    Can I ask you a rather personal question... well...I guess more nosy than personal....
    Did you finance your Truck and 5th Wheel? I ask because I wondered if I should buy something now, get it paid off before hitting the road...or if it is possible to work from the road, live and pay the payments on something like a traveling rig outfit as well to be able to afford gas, food, cellular, etc.....I have a monthly income from a pension ... and a 401k from my current job.. but I am only 56...so I will have to earn an income while traveling.... ( I am starting a business I can take on the road with me) I am excited, but scared too... I don't want to make my expenses too too much for hitting the road.... Any thoughts you could share?
    Thank you for being there for us hopefuls.... and being the beacon of hope and positivity.

    There's a new app, Trucking Weather & Traffic getting pretty good reviews xcept it doesn't auto rotate to landscape mode yet if you need that.
    Also re your comment about not wanting to be negative, I don't see how anyone would consider your honest experiences & evals as negativity. When we're searching for info or listening to your insights, we DO want to hear both good & not so good (i.e., bad) like your Tiffen experiences. We really count on your honesty & straightforwardness -- & you haven't let us down yet👍🥰.
    & lastly....Thank you for the absolutely wonderful way you ended this video. Plan to share the poem with family & friends. Prayers for you to stay healthy & safe, looking forward to your next YT.

    You are always so positive Robin. I'm a woman of faith also. But it's hard when you hear sobbing late at night from the single mom neighbor with 2 kids who won't be able to pay her rent. It tears my heart out because staying at home without pay for those folks isn't healing. This whole apartment complex is full of "little people" who need their paychecks. I've started carrying grocery gift cards $10.00 to help when I bump into these folks. It doesn't bother me to go without a meal but it drives me crazy to have children be hungry. I hope this resolves soon before there is a serious economic collapse.

    Hey Robin! Listening to your account of the wall separating on your last rig, this demonstrates my belief that factory RV s are for the most part poorly built with cheap materials. I bought a used shuttle bus (22’) and had it converted. I used high quality wood, and all organic fabrics, flooring, and latex foam, as well as stainless steel or glass and minimal plastic. The shuttle bus was a church bus. 2009 Chevy express 3500 cutaway with a Goshen shell with 12,500 miles. It’s very high quality and solid. I hope people consider building their own rig. There are so many pros and few cons! Happy travels everyone!

    Robin, Thanks for your positivity and the care you show for the community you’ve built. I made it from northwestern New Mexico to central New Mexico to a dear friend’s spare studio apt where my dog and I can live quietly for as long as we need to. That last few hundred miles on the highways was tense, not knowing if I’d be stopped on the way because of lack of gas or by the authorities. Unusual circumstances make you think of the worst that could happen and I had this scenario that we RVERS wouldn’t be allowed to continue. Of course I had no trouble, I was able to get gas and find a place to stock up on extra fresh food before getting here. I’m now dug in with a studio space, bathroom, air bed, table and chairs, heat and lights. The van is parked safely outside, the van food and fridge cleaned out, all shipshape for going back on the road in a month or two or three. I’m grateful for what I have and especially for a good Internet connection. All the best, girl!

I actually live in the hills, the foothills of NC, and I'll tell you, you're going to be a whole lot better off, if you get this thing, in an inner-city hospital then you are in a rural hospital in the hills. Think about it. Rural hospitals have been closing for years. Stay where you've got good medical. If I get sick I'm heading out of the hills.

    Hi Robin, My family/father always showed me everything he reviewed with my brother, women can do anything men can ( using my Dad's words). It's about staying calm and thinking though a situtaion. F350 was a great move, you want a high payload, Dually's can have the highest in many cases, also pulling is high(5th wheels are heavy and have high wind load). We regards to the sprinter van, it's necessary to make some upgrades: ( My E350) Rear Sway Bar 1.1/2, Front 1.3/8, Bilstein Shocks rear/front, SumoSprings Front/Back, Bilstein Steering Stabillizer. This made a Huge difference, we go 75 MPH in 30 Degree winds. Making less shaking , resulting in less things will break/come loose. You can purchase the same items for a sprinter van . Also a factor Don't over load your Van, my van has up to 2,540 Payload, many of the sprinters are lower ( # Stated on side of front doors). Thats the items you add in your Van once you head out on the road. One of the reason I decided to purchase on a Ford E350 was the Payload and the gas , instead of diesel fuel. I paid 45K less for the Ford, 10 Gals per mile - Sprinter 14 gals not worth extra cost for Sprinter for me ( everyone is different do the numbers) Cost of my upgrades: $1,219.00 ( SDTruckSprings.com) they are good people have low pricing and good support. You don't have to do all these upgrades, but I would recommend you do. Thanks Robin love your video's, stay save !

I do lose track of what day it is though. Good for you Robin. Gender does not provide better judgement skills or coordination. You can certainly learn the skills needed & chose a terrific teacher! Adaptation is one of your best talents anyway - your ability to look for solutions that work is your superpower.

    Have been plugging along...some days feeling really down about the whole C19 event and other days I wake up feeling more hopeful. What works for me? Not watching the news anymore. I just can't. It's like the exteme watching during 9/11...had to stop watching the news then too. Today was a bad day as we learned our state parks (WA) have closed down all camping thru the end of April (yet leave the day use and trails open)...so some reservations we had coming up (and were REALLY looking forward to) have been cancelled and we are feeling bummed.

    Loved the poem, and love you so much! I'm where you were when your sister started you thinking about being the free bird you are now. I'm a truck driver, 57, and thinking of either getting a doolie or using my big truck to haul a 5th wheel. I don't know! So many decisions and I only have a few years left to pay for it. My partner is disabled and doesn't want to be a nomad, but I think I can change her mind once we get going. We love your Solitude and we walked through one in February during our 2nd RV show. You make it all seem so easy, but I married a pack rat! I know I'm all over the place with this note but I just love your videos and think you rock! Ssup Robin!🐦🙋🏽‍♀️ Love the pompadour🙌🏽🙌🏽 I know sprinters are all the rave now with Vanlife; however, I would never get a Mercedes anything. I had a Mercedes S430 for about 5 years. I inherited it from my grandmother. It was a tank and drove beautifully; however, I paid no less than $1000 whenever it went in for service.Parts & labor are expensive AF! Let’s not forget the gas. It was expensive to insure as well. I hung onto it because it was my Gran’s. The air conditioner didn’t work, all four tire sensors needed to be replaced, brakes, new air shocks, etc. it got too expensive so I sold it. “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”🤣🤣

    My husband and I sold our house and became full-time RVers February 21, 2020. We had planned for this for two years and were so excited to start our new lifestyle. We had camping reservations made through June 1st, and we had scheduled medical care for our journey, as I need intravenous infusions every 8 weeks in an outpatient setting to manage my rheumatoid arthritis. We had all the logistics worked out and we were elated to be on our way. Then the coronavirus crisis hit. Disappointed, yes, but now we just want to stay safe and protect our health, and everyone else's health. Thank goodness we have family in Florida who has allowed us to camp out on their property to ride out this storm. Our family has graciously consented for us to stay as long as necessary until it is safe to travel again. This also allows us to practice the CDC recommendations for social distancing, as we are not in close proximity to other campers. At times like this, it is such a blessing to have family around you. Hope everyone else is finding safe havens.

    We are on lockdown in our house here in northern IL and super sad that it looks like our summer camping will be impacted. I'm also sad because my mom passed away 3 weeks ago and we planned her memorial service for May 2nd and I'm not sure we'll be able to have it and that is what I'm most upset about. As far as the lockdown, we're fine. Plenty of food and no big financial issues and my husband has been working from home for years so it's really not much of a change for us at all and since I'm an introvert, I've been training for this my whole life. LOL I'm just baking and cooking and chilling. You stay safe out there.

I give nip to outdoor cats where I live ,on the weekends , while maintenance is doing outdoor repairs, painting, when there is tension in the air or I see they are nervous, hurting, just not up to their norms....and. also, just for fun. I learned recently that there are different kinds of catnip .A super sweet Male polydactile cat is just not interested in the $5 container kind that I get from Walmart every month for 5 years now, but he absolutely loves the kind a neighbor gets from Aldis and though they both smell the same to me( like tea) , the other cats show zero interest in that one.lol. In other words, try different kinds, if they do not take right to it. I kept the litterbox in two areas, under the table and then, under a benchseat after removing a vent cover. It worked well . I stored excess litter and sealed food on one side and the box was on the other side. I used freshstep litter and the orders were minimal with fans going...

Good tip on litter too, as I know we can’t use the chicken feed anymore when we hit the road...I think it would attract too many wild critters.

    This too shall pass... As the saying goes😉. Most and I say most of this will pass by the end of April. I have been researching and have some inside knowledge of what's going on. Our government didn't get in this shape over night. Many many years we have been headed in a downward spiral, and good souls wanted/needed to put a stop to this. Hince why Trump was put in place. He has been prepped, schooled for years to be placed where he's at. Right now they are keeping people in doors in order to nab the little fish involved in the corruption. The 10 days of darkness will be military going after the BIG fish. Don't panic, use common sense. Be vigilant of your surroundings, Also we are in the process of going to the gold standard (yeah) so regardless whether you are in sticks n bricks or RV.....Just use your head, plan ahead, and enjoy your surroundings.

So, I do most of her shopping for her, etc, and keep an eye on her. For me, it's had its bonuses. I was living in a van previously, and this Fall when she nearly died, she said she didn't want to die and I was living in a "stupid van where you can't stand up." Note: For people learning to back up. I drove a school bus and they don't have cameras. Our bus manager taught us by putting a trash can behind the bus we had to back till we thought was good, get out and look and we had to be with in 2 feet, then we had to go around corner of building and back up doing a turn to the trash can. (This is also part of the driving test for the CDL license for busses and semi's)
    The trick is when you do it within the 2 feet look at you mirror and look where the can shows up and can even mark it with tape and you will always be able to back up within the 2 ft

    When I was 17 I decided that I wanted to get a camper and travel North America. Well a couple weeks later just after my 18th. birthday I got letter saying I had to go to Fort Hamilton for an Induction Physical . HHhhmm that kinda made me put getting the camper on the back burner. This happened a lot and for many years. Something comes up and I had to give up my dream.
    Now at the age of 68 my 2 daughters are grown now and out on there own. My wife also has grown and she’s out on her own also. About 7 years ago I was medically grounded by the FAA due to paralysis in my right arm and hand, lower back and right leg & foot. This is the long term effects of having fractured 2 cervical vertebrae and compressed and fractured 3 vertebrae in the lumbar area of the lower spine. This was all due to a helicopter crash I was in, as a passenger in June 1974, while on active duty in the USAF. Over the decades calcium built up on fractures and caused interference with nerves and nerve bundles ultimately causing the paralysis. A few months after that I was notified that there was problems with some bloodwork and I needed to get further test done very quickly. Yup, cancer and I needed to make decisions quickly due to the aggressive cancer I had. At that point I had already moved out of my home of 24 years because it was not a nice environment anymore. My youngest daughter and I had moved in to my moms house because she needed tremendous amount of care and she no longer could afford to pay the people that had been taking care of her. She had the early stages of dementia and physically she couldn’t walk anymore and just gave up on life. It was very difficult for me but my little daughter 23 yo at the time was amazing to watch how she took care of her Granma. Four months later my mom died of heart failure in her sleep in her bed in her home. Just the way she had told me a long long time ago.
    I had lost my career & job, from the paralysis then got cancer and my wife left me and my mother died all this in just under a year. Whew! I asked the BigGuy what did I do to piss him off? He hasn’t got back to me yet.
    So, even though I couldn’t work anymore and my ex-wife took all the money and the house I saved and starved and finally was able to purchase a Class A motorhome a few weeks ago. It’s an old1998 Fleetwood Pace Arrow Vision 36 and I paid cash for it after saving everything I could since March 2014. I had $1565.00 just in quarters that I cashed in when I identified the MH I bought. I also had dimes and nickels rolled up also. People, actually my 2 grown daughters, asked me why I got the Class A and not something smaller since it’s just me now. Well, I volunteered to do a long term medical test program with a new drug to prevent certain types of cancer relapse. When I got started in this I met other people who were sick with other types of cancers and in lot worse shape than me. Some had really given up on everything and had no where to live. So I let people move in with me at my moms old house. I didn’t charge rent and I paid for a majority of all the food. So, I got the Class A to continue to help one of the people that lived there .. Now, with me in my old tired Pace Arrow. That’s. Wrong...I’m old and tired. I live full time in this and here on Long Island it’s not easy to just park and go to sleep. The police have not been pleasant. They violate your civil rights and I’ve been threatened to catch a beating when I disagreed with his assessment of me. I’m an old guy who is a disabled veteran and a senior citizen and the local police feel compelled to show me that they are tough and have no problem with smacking me around if I don’t respond the way they want.
    Due to the medical crisis going on around the world and in our country I drove this morning to the VA hospital in Northport, NY to get away from the local police and be near medical help if needed. No, neither one of us is sick. I pulled into a parking lot and hopefully since I have 5 years 8months and 22 days active duty with 2 years in the shit . Hopefully that will be enough to let me have a parking spot. At least until this medical crisis is over. I will let you know.
    The reason I went through all this is because I wanted you to get an idea of who I am , where I am and with help from you start this the last stage of my life. The stage that I’ve been thinking about doing for over 50 years. I don’t have a lot of money. I’m living on social security . If something goes wrong mechanically like the engine blows up. That’s it I’m finished . So I do a preflight inspection both before engine start and after engine start checks. Mostly for leaks. Same with the generator. I do a post drive inspection of the entire MH. I’m trying my best to make this work.
    I’ve seen a lot of your videos and I like the way you present yourself and the subject matter. There are others out there but you’re unique.
    I like unique. If you feel, after reading this that you would help me along the way with answers and ideas based
    from your experiences I would be forever grateful. My cell is 631-633-1252 Thank you very much and I hope to hear from you. Mark

    RE class C driveability: my ancient 30 foot class C is on a Ford Super Duty chassis (slightly larger engine than the 350, over 1 ton dually chassis). It gets horrible gas mileage but it is very driveable. I have driven it in winds of 35 mph multiple times (though I would rather avoid that). I have driven it in a blizzard. Driving in high wind is not fun and I avoid it if possible, but if push comes to shove I know I can do it. I think the Sprinter chassis may be a little less beefy than mine, and I base that on the fact that it gets so much better mileage and I therefore assume it is lighter and smaller. I would not hesitate to get a Class C if that is what you want. I love mine.

In these uncertain times I could accommodate maybe two rigs less than 30 feet with simpatico folks. I did AirB&B with a room in my house a couple of years ago and, since there's no way to really screen people aside from what AirB&B allows I had a couple of bad experiences, so before I agreed to a mooch docker I'd like to get to know them a little first.

    About driving a Class C RV. I am 77yrs old, female and a full time nomad. My rig is no harder to drive than my car. I have a Ford E450 engine and a Gulfstream body. My suggestion is don't buy new. Get something with low mileage and as new as you can afford. A used vehicle has had all of those first year issues literally shaken out. I have been three years in this rig and had only minimal appliance issues.

    Please go ahead and do your planned videos, Robin. Ex: Our cats need us now, not whenever the virus is controlled. Litter boxes need to placed strategically, I'd love to hear your ideas. Life goes on, and we still need to tend to it. Stay safe and healthy. Hugs and kissies for Big Boy.

    Well I’m bummed. I’m almost totally sold down of all possessions and now I’m going to rent a room and hunker down instead of hitting the road like I wanted to. I’m ok with it though. The bright side is I’ll work on the van, which is just a shell now. Stay safe, Robin ❤️

    I'm only speaking for myself but I would LOVE to see all those videos right now!! There is so much doom and gloom on TV and Social media that seeing the videos you have trying to learn to drive that big rig may be just what the doctor ordered!! ✌🐢

    Tip of the day: me, I live in the city among the rat race. I dont RV, but for now, my girl Robin takes my hand and shows me through her eyes that awesome journey, thank you. Yet, I am a huge outdoor enthusiast, hiking and mountain biking (off road) a lifestyle that suits my sensibilities. With the days few past, I have made it a point to take a break from world new, by getting in my car and taking random aimless quite drives in the county. I look at the wide open fields and big sky and breath. I take snapshots of Gods majesty and ponder how great thou art. It grounds me as I hear that still small voice telling me the sky is not falling, and that this too will pass. I share my photos with others to remind them that fresh air still exist. So take that drive and dont forget to breath...Do you receive the today? Amen...Peace be with you all.

    Hi Robin. Love your videos, love the content. But today I feel a need to offer a correction on a topic of solar and specific to you running your washer/dryer. Many of you nomad experts, Bob Wells being another, are incorrect on when you say "run on solar". Nothing in your RV runs on solar, nothing. I hear this too many times and its an injustice to RV wannabes in say this. All things in the RV requiring electricity to run, either shore power or battery power. Solar only charges the battery. If you have enough of a battery bank and a large enough inverter you can power anything in the RV including A/C and your wash machine- considering you have continuous days of sunshine to harvest the energy to reload the battery bank. Please consider a video to talk about your off grid electrical, what you have for solar panels, what you have for a battery bank and inverter.

    I don't understand why the female species thinks it's hard to handle big rigs. My daughter 19 drives 18 wheelers for the military. She has never made a big deal or even complained it's to hard. Thanks for the video

    I have been planning my nomad life for 5 years at least. Scrimping and saving and ready to go. I was going to quit my job in May and hit the road but no way would I consider doing that now. It’s just too hard to know what’s open or closed on the road and I’m very lucky I’m still employed. I just think there would be too many unpredictable crazy people out there now running around with no plan.

    Thank You for that moving poem. I did a Google search and shared it to my Face Book page. It's so appropriate for our "new way of life". I pray that you get to your friends place safely. I am was told to shelter in place, I am in the high risk category so I am happy to obliged. I have hubby so he runs most errands if I needed or want something. Stay safe.

    My hubby and I have a Grand Design and added after market slide toppers. They were fairly inexpensive for the job they do. Would recommend you do that to save your slide. Stay healthy and looking forward to seeing what you have for us! We just got back to home base to hunker down and wait this out. Loved what you read at the end.

    Thanks for all your advice Robin! You are my favorite boon docking RUclipsr! Is it just what I see on my feeds, or does it seem like I see interviews and travel information from a lot of women? I hope it isn’t an economic necessity for women to be RVing alone, and more about the adventure.

    We fulltime. We just bought property last summer and built a barn for storage and safety. We put in 2 full hookup spots outside,and have 3 acres. We are 4 blocks from a lake. We had planned to fly to Alaska to see our grandkids but that is on hold. We will now be here on our property doing improvements all year.
