I'm sorry, but John Lurie is one of the greatest talents of the present age, and shamefully unacknowledged and underappreciated. Brilliant guy, mad skills in so many areas.
He has fans and the respect of many people in the art and music community. Maybe he is not as popular but I don't think he is underrated. Perhaps underrepresented.
television, one of the biggest curses in the history of mankind, suddenly blessed with a transcendental, brilliant, mad intervention. art as it should be - a gateway to raw indescribable beauty. how can this be so undervalued and unknown?
11:33 the hair under Matt Dillon's lip, backward cap & the flannel shirt. "Seattle Grunge music" was exploding in the autumn of 1991 at the same time this episode was being filmed. Matt had just finished filming Cameron Crowes' film "Singles" about relationships among Generation X'ers in Seattle. (released in April 1992 & featuring members of Pearl Jam & Soundgarden) This was the "calm before the Grunge hyped storm".
...for the masses, maybe? The “scene” and the sound had been around for five years and change before ‘92. We get your meaning, though, along with Dillon’s “soul patch.” Cheers.
John Lurie originally wanted to use his friend Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea for the episode filmed in Costa Rica instead of actor Matt Dillon. But the Japanese producers that financed the series pressured Lurie into using Dillon because he was a bigger name celebrity. According to the audio commentary on the Criterion DVD, Lurie had only met Dillon once or twice before filming which explains why they are not as talkative with each other as Lurie is with the other guests. (From IMDB)
Loved the series. They anchored from the stern of the boat, which can sink and kill you quickly in a heavy current. No doubt the producers knew nothing about fishing while doing this series.
1:45 This young Japanese woman is Kazu Makino and, according to the end credits and the IMDb, she provided vocals to the soundtrack; she's likely seen also at 1:40. A couple of years later Kazu Makino founded noise rock band Blonde Redhead with Italian twin brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace. They still record and tour after more than thirty years. I once read a Facebook post by Kazu Makino saying that she met John Lurie in Japan. Judging from the tone of that post I had the feeling that they were in a relationship and he brought her to New York where she later met the Pace brothers. This TV series is produced by a Japanese broadcaster by the way.
I just watched the episode with John and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch last night. Now I’m hooked. No pun intended. I hope those horses lived a good full life
As I recall renting some of these videos a long time ago, unless I missed it, this seems to be an edited version where they leave out that they ate Mushrooms before the magical dance.
“Painting with John,” currently running on HBO... last episode of the hopefully first season airs Friday. Great stuff. Wonderful stories. Amazing paintings.
It's said Lurie'd preferred to have the Chilli Peppers guitarist as a guest, but for some unknown reason the japanese producers insisted for hosting Dillon.
Did you know Flea is not the guitarist you fool it was John Frusciante and he wacked out on the junk badly at this point in time so unfortunately I doubt he would have rocked up if I know smack heads but if he had it would have been genius
"These are horses." 😂 Fishing with John is brilliant!
I literally laughed out loud when I heard that.
@@edflynn3281 Second that!
I was going to comment on the same :D

He kinda sucks at fishing and conversing.
KERIN GORDON there is no conversing with fishing
Why are you sorry?

1:07 The choir dramatically singing “We’re going fishing! Fishing! Fiiiiiiiishing!” has me cracking up!
That dance and the Tom Waits cheese bait advice has changed my fishing life. Never going back to live bait or not dancing before I cast a line.

Gunsmoke was one of my favorite programs…. Purepoetry
“Man and nature forge their will on each other’s futures”
narrator, randomly "I think this is John's best show" lol
Loved the series. They anchored from the stern of the boat, which can sink and kill you quickly in a heavy current. No doubt the producers knew nothing about fishing while doing this series.
Toncho has transformed himself!
"An unregistered prop plane." This is going to end perfectly fine.
“Matt?”
“Yes John?”
“Are you still with me?”
“Yes John.”
😭🤣🤣
"All the fishermen in the world do the dance before fishing."
"These are horses"

Aguire, Der Zorn Gottes.

I still have worries about the horses... 😢
Dillon with his shorts and shoes looks like he's been kidnaped to do this episode.

John Lurie and Matt Dillon in one boat?! That's such a concentration of cool I'm amazed the river didn't freeze over.

the choir is amasing!
The commentary gets to me every time
“No my stage name is…. Finster”
"the president of costa rica is considering making the horse the national animal"
The sloth is the national animal of Costa Rica
"No white man has ever been this far before"
Was this on HBO on Mars?
...almost... IFC, or Sundance Channel, or Bravo, or A & E... Earth. HBO Max on Mars is a very possible future, however, so way to be a visionary.
So what are some other weirdo pieces of TV like this that I need to check out? John Lurie is the best.
Nathan for you
“Joe Pera Talks with You” is an excellent, very unique show.
“Painting with John,” currently running on HBO... last episode of the hopefully first season airs Friday.

the epitome of zany
This is obviously a soundstage in Hollywood.
Love the show, but not the greatest episode. They have zero chemistry, and if I'm not mistaken, Matt is smashed pretty early into it

I would love to see Fishing with John feat. Ted Bundy. Or other famous serial killer.
