Had a chance to witness his presentation of Abhogi at Maratha mandir,Mumbai. The programme was arranged by the Marathi Udyojak group for Pt Bhimsenji’s 70th birthday. His humerus behaviour was outstanding. He said, “ me completing 70, for which I have not done anything, but, you people are giving me a chance for this concert. I pray to the Almighty, he keeps giving you businessmen the similar thinking always,so that we artists get your Prem and Artha too.😂. Miss him immensely.
The abhogi varnam is the second I think in Panchapakesa Iyer's varnamalika. I'll speculate that Bhimsen Joshi learnt the varnam when he started out his musical journey in Karnatic music as a child., To his lasting credit, he has shaped the contours of the raga beautifully in this grand exposition.
I have heard Abhogi Kanahara of Panditji some where in the year 1970 or 71 at Rangabhavan , Dhobitalao , Mumbai during State Music Festival. For many days the tunes of the ragas were circulating in my head and rather hypnotized me. Panditji was awarded Padmashree that year by Govt. Of India. If not, then that would have been great insult to the artist of his stature who was became after wards Bharat Ratna.
Enchanting and melodious presentation of the melody of this mismerising Raag Aabhogi. What an amazing elaboration of structure of this Raag not possible for all the artists.
Many thanks for this gem. Unfortunately, Pt Bhimsen Joshi didn't sing Rag Abhogi too frequently. His voice, technique and emotion he brought to bear on his music are ideally suited to render such soulful raags. But one doesn't find too many of these; nor any of his singing Raag Bairagi.
Actually, he did sing ragas like Abhogi, Chhayanat, Marwa a good deal but perhaps not as much as the other nightly ragas like Yaman, Puriya, Puriya Kalyan, Puriya Dhanashree, Shuddha Kalyan, Darbari, Malkauns
What perhaps made Abhogi special for him and other Kirana-walas is the fact Abdul Karim Khan was probably the first Hindustani musician to perform and record this Carnatic raga. In fact, Abhogi is believed to be Gangubai Hangal's favorite raga.
I don't know about others, but I really think the one of the best things that Pt Bhimsen ji did after his Todi and Puriya is Gaud Sarang. So very well composed.
@@FarhanAmin1994 Sure he did. But it is hard to find them on CD. I'm looking for his Abhogi -- complete concert -- from his younger days; his voice was at its best in the 1970's. So if you are aware of any, please post here. All I can find is an 8 or 13 minute rendition.
@@chitrasenbhat8713 For one, it is not "Karnataka style." It is a Carnatic ragam in which the top few composers in Telugu, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada have created kritis. Enjoyable. A great Raga Abhogi. Does it have Carnatic origin? Which raga?
It is Janya karaharapriya
