Building Barn Swallow Nest Boxes - A New Home After Eviction from INSIDE the Barn

The barn is now fully re-sided and has all new windows, eliminating all formerly available means of entry for birds - particularly barn swallows. The swallows have nested in the rafters annually, but now need to find a new home.
To assist them in that endeavor, we’re putting together some nest boxes to mount under the eaves of the barn to provide sheltered nesting places OUTSIDE the barn.
If you have issues with birds nesting near your doorways or under porch roofs, this might be a good solution to provide them a sheltered place to nest that won’t lead to damage to your home or property.

I love our swallows a d welcome them. They are protected by law in Texas. They are awesome on our farm .

Please do a follow-up showing where they were installed and how many barn swallows returned to them

They’re attached to the eaves walls at the top under the eaves. No birds used them. No swallows got into the barn either. One pair built a nest in my adjacent open lean-to shed.

Have the swallows built nests in your boxes? I have a similar situation with a renovated barn this year. I built these same boxes. The swallows just recently showed up but I'm afraid they've left after finding the barn closed and apparently the houses I placed in the eve of the barn aren't appealing enough. I'd love to hear if they're working for you.

They usually return around now… there is only one shelter with a nest started, and that may not be the barn swallows. I’m not sure, as it’s on the back side of the building away from the house and I haven’t sat to watch it. Perhaps similar to your situation these won’t be very attractive to them.
