Brad and Kyle I joined the PBA earlier this year and bowled my 1st tournament in Houston last month with a 172 avg. After bowling sport shots all Summer I found myself struggling on the house shot once league started back. I watched this video Wednesday. I realized I wasn’t getting into the swing until the 4th step. I tried this technique last night and 22 X’s later I’m a believer. Only a couple easy missed spares from 700 (673). Thank you! You’re channel is very informative and entertaining!
Brad and Kyle, I want to thank you guys for all of your knowledge. Before I started watching you guys my average was about 165. But only 2 months later, I am averaging over 200 each day with only one problem, the 10 pin. Thanks
Open up a bit or increase your revs (following through your release by simulating a sort of flicking motion at your fingertips at the end of the swing may help).
Would you guys consider doing any two handed videos? Maybe bring in a guest like Kyle Troup if you guys don't feel comfortable doing it yourselves? I enjoy watching how you guys break things down.
I have been working on my timing and getting the ball into the swing faster since taking a lesson with Kyle this summer. It's difficult to change! 2 steps forward 1 step back but always trying to make forward progress. Thanks for this video!
Thanks to both of you. Love your content and methods. You both have really good attitudes and demeanor (though Kyle is demeanor of the two, LOL) I'll be 77 this year and I'm still learning. It would help if I could reverse the body worn issues, but all in all, I'm happy to be able to still bowl decent (at times). Visualization can work and does work in many things. I used to use it in may sales practices, and when I switched from ice skating, after a 10 year layoff, to roller skating, I was able to do things the very first time out by visualizing how I was going to lift off and spin and how I would land. Bowling is similar. Self coaching and focus all important. Thanks for the reminder.
Practiced this to day and I immediately noticed a difference in consistency and on the lane. Still get mixed up counting in my head but 179,221,129. Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you for always uploading a helpful video! Tell me about the drill layout of the two, but I am learning how to unload the American style. from Japan
Kyle: I watched you in the Bear Open continually put your thumb in some sort of bag between shots. So was Wes Malott. I assume that is some type of powder to keep your thumb from sticking. I have many problems with sticking in thumb holes especially in warm weather. Exactly what was in that bag, why do you use it, and where can I get it? Thanks.

It helps soak up moisture which helps toward a frictionless, smoother release. Best used when your hands are clean (more important than you may think.) Also try keeping the top of your thumb flush with the surface to avoid gripping it; it looks like a thumbs-up position. If you're still having issues releasing the ball comfortably and without fear of it getting stuck, consider maybe opening it up a bit more.
Great video guys, timing is everything in bowling. That's the one thing I struggled with for years. I finally started taking a half step back before going forward and that helped tremendously.
we do candlepin bowling up here in massachusetts and most people do a 3 step delivery that's very quick and to me harder to time correctly. gonna try a 4 step sometime soon. i've been a league bowler for over 40 yrs and old habits are hard to break. we mostly bowl the pins but i'm trying to learn the target arrows also.
Howdie Brad & Kyle, My name is Steven Whitehouse. My problem I have is when I go to release the ball I tend to twist my wrist the wrong way. That is, I'm trying to improve my rotation. And I'm a right handed bowler. What's going on is, at the last-minute I would twist my wrist to the left. Is there any way I can stop doing that? I've been trying to turn my wrist left, but for some reason I always twist right. I also enjoy all of your teaching video on the basics of bowling. I've only recently return to bowling and have been bowling for 3 yrs now. This year will be my 4th season with the Manchester Alley Cats from Manchester, NH. And we are with Special Olympics Of New Hampshire. Bowling is one of my favorite sports. I've also been working on my form and not dropping the ball so often. I do know that practice makes perfect. That's why I'm bowling now before bowling season begins in September of 2020 at Yankee Lanes Bowling Alley in Manchester, NH at the corner of Valley & Maple Street next to Gill Stadium and the Police Station.
None at all, just ignore the first step they're talking about. I think there is a video with Chris Barnes on youtube where he demonstrates both and talks a bit about it
The biggest issue I have with timing is the foul line. I have a huge tendency to get the ball to the line too early. I have been practicing getting my slide foot to the foul line first so I can avoid getting the ball off my hand to quickly.
Ring 10 or weak 10? 10 pins are caused by the ball not retaining enough energy and deflecting as the ball enters the pins. It's not necessarily a sign that you don't have enough power.
If you are leaving a lot of flat 10's, try moving 1 or 2 boards to your right. Your ball might be running out of energy moving left to right and then left again. After all not too many of us can generate the rev rate and power that Brad and Kyle have. Moving a bit to your right at the start may give your ball just enough retained energy to drive the pocket and get that pesky 10.
Your videos are very helpful. If a person were to send you some videos, doing give Lessons based on those videos. If so what are the cost of those le as ons
I always like your videos and they help tremendously. After taking a 11 year break from bowling I just go back into it last summer. My question though is you talk about dropping the ball in front of the knee. I am a 5 step person myself. Yet many of my friends tell me to make sure I cross my foot over on the second step to clear the path for ball. So is that wrong or does the pushaway belong happening before the cross over part? Thanks in advance.
This is a very good question, I don’t believe they mean it to be literally in front of the knee but rather to visualize the ball being push straight forward and dropped into the swing. Hope this helps!
Thanks guys. I've been practicing a lot lately, and I'm really interested in getting better. I average around 215 on a house shot, and I've bowled a couple tournaments on sport patterns and I felt like I learned a lot from those. Is there any way you know where I could practice these sport patterns without spending a fortune on tournaments?
Check with your local center, some offer PBA experience leagues with more difficult patterns. Some centers will also put out challenge patterns on certain days of the week to practice on.
@@martinkhoe4997 I do see him winning much nowadays. 2020 is pretty much cancelled, so we won't know how he would have done, but Norm won two titles in 2019. That is more than anyone but three other players. He was also number 8 on the 2019 earnings list. Yeah, Norm is still tearing it up and he's never been a power thrower.
@@ericfleet9602 I think they mean for the younger generation, power is everything. But I love seeing the “weaker” bowlers take out the power guys, proving that power really isn’t everything
I have worked on getting the ball moving but I struggle because I can't get my feet to move fast enough. Ball starts at a good time in videos but I am still starting my slide when the ball is at the bottom. When I try to speed up my feet I grab and pull down. So hard to fix
Try starting your push off with the ball up by your shoulder. Push away straight from your shoulder, this should make the ball have to travel further in your swing allowing your feet time to get to the line before you release the ball. And remember like they said in the video changing your timing feels really goofy so practice is key when it comes to timing changes. Good luck and good bowling.
I love this show. Great tip guys. What’s your favorite bowling book you ever read? I’m reading The Mental Game right now. Any other cool books you can suggest?
Throw further down where the friction is, usually around the edges of the lane. House oil patterns sort of look pyramidal with most of the oil concentrated in the middle, and less so at the sides. This helps the ball reach the pocket and thus makes it easier for less experienced players to strike with a wider window for error.
I have a 4 step approach. Typically I start my swing with my first step. I'm assuming this is the same concept?? This feels and sounds like a dumb question coming from someone that has bowled for 8 years or so... Like you said, the game is changing and there is still some structure as to how the game works... So maybe it isnt a dumb question lol.
Correct, the difference between a 4 step and a 5 step is the "nothing" step at the beginning as Fred Borden puts it. You want your ball side hand and foot to start together (right side for a right-hander). Holding the ball and not getting it started causes the body to get to the foul line ahead of the arm swing which will cause that lovely yank at the bottom of the swing. Hope this helps!
More importantly, why are there no decent videos on the 3-step approach? There are plenty on 3-step drills, but virtually nothing covering the approach.
Makes sense. I do a 5 step, but I have a hitch. I go step, step, then begin my movement. In my head i count it out like 1,2,1,2,3. I am going to work on this type of approach. I have been bowling for over 10 years but am only a 200 average, I have always felt like something is holding me back but can't put my finger on it. I bowl 2 leagues a week, but NEVER practice.
Ah god, I was practicing timing and my ball went errant of my hand and smacked my door. One broken door frame later, I decided I will no longer practice at home.
Try practicing in the basement if you have one. I have a clear area and a big chair at the end of the area---a good spot to practice the release. I toss the ball into the chair.

The 4 step is identical minus the first step. The ball side hand and ball side foot should start together to get timing lined up.
