How to Scan Documents and Make PDFs with iPhone or iPad

- Need to scan a document to print a copy of it or attach to an email, but don’t have a scanner handy? If you have an iOS device, you’re in luck. Watch this video to learn how to scan documents and turn them into PDFs with your iPhone or iPad.
To begin, open the Notes app that came built-in on your device. Tap the new note button in the bottom right corner. To scan your document, tap the plus sign at the bottom, then select Scan Documents. Position your device over the document so you can see it on your screen. When you have it nicely positioned, tap the white circle at the bottom. Adjust the corners of the box that appears over your scan to ensure that all the text is within the box. When you’re done, tap Keep Scan. If you need to scan another page, repeat to capture another page. When you’ve scanned all the pages, tap Save in the bottom right corner. To turn this scan into a PDF, tap the scanned document. In the top right corner, tap the Share icon. Then select Create PDF.
To save the file, tap Done in the top left corner, then select Save File To. Choose where you’d like to save the file, then tap Add. To access your PDFs, just open the Files app. Tap and hold on the file to open a pop-up menu. Tap Rename if you want to give your doc a specific title. Tap the PDF to open it. If you need to print a copy or attach it to an email, tap the Share icon at the bottom to access those options.

I down loaded a useless app that I wasted two hours on and the I followed these instructions and it worked the first time. Sixty pages of records transmitted at the speed of light.

Great tutiorial!! I have iPhone 13 iOS 16.2. I don’t have a pdf printer mark up copy as choices after I use the share icon
Edit does not have these as choices to add to menu
The menu has changed a little bit since we posted this video. Now, tap the camera icon in a Note, then select Scan Documents. You can then create a PDF as shown in the tutorial. Hope that helps!
That's pretty handy. Wish there was a similar thing for android, too.

How does one save the file as a JPEG which I can edit on my desktop computer instead of a PDF? Where is it located in my iPhone so I can transfer it to my desktop computer? What is the difference between photographing the document orthogonally with the iPhone camera vs a scan in Notes?

You can just download powerpoint pdf making app and my phone is Android but still I think you can download it on ios

This doesn’t work with iPhone 6s, does it? Because when I click on “new note” on the bottom right corner there is no menu popping up above the keyboard only suggestions of words I can write.

They've since updated it to be a camera icon instead of a plus sign in newer versions of iOS

How do you scan more than 24 pages into the document?
Hi, when I open a new note there is no + or camera. The only options are trash, share or edit.

abrams1130 me neither but you could do that easily on your laptop or something through adobe flash player, it’s a little bit more complicated but it’s possible if you really need it

It doesn't work on my "iPad Air" because it doesn't have the + sign (Notes). The software version is 12.4.2. I guess this iPad is too old to have this function. Too bad. I need to scan a document for my classes. I am now teaching online due to COVID . Guess I will just take a photo and hope it comes out clearly. Thanks for the video. Very helpful function if you have it on your device.
Do you have a camera icon in your note? Try tapping that, then select Scan Documents. Depending on which version of iOS you're using the icons available may differ. Hope that helps!
Techboomers thanks for your help. Really appreciate it. I also found a free scanner app for iPad. Must be careful, though. Many scanner apps claim to be free, but when I open them, they state free for only 3 days and a hefty charge after that. I will try your hints. Thanks again.

Ah yes, the + icon has been replaced by the camera symbol which allows you to send photo after you take it as a .pdf. Cheers!

This video was made with an iPhone 6S, so that shouldn't be the case. You should either see that menu with the plus sign option, or a larger + button in the bottom right corner, which opens the menu if you accidentally closed it.
