Usually, halwais are considered poor or people with a lower status which is why Rahul was being made fun of by everyone. It was his family business in the movie which is why they were well off (as shown in the beginning) but when people hear "halwai", they don't really consider the person rich or respectable. I think it's important to differentiate between the film industries in India, especially Bollywood (hindi language films) and regional film industries, instead of just calling it "Indian cinema" cuz that's way too broad a term for the difference in content and production between Bollywood and the others. Just keep in mind that regional films tend to be overhyped trash/cringe, so putting them in the same box is a bit insulting.
