This video explains how the Netherlands is a power house in food production. Of course the farmers have always had a big influenced in the country. But the most important reason why everyone in the Netherlands found it important goes back to the hunger winter of 1944. Never hunger again, and the best way to make sure there is enough food for everybody is produced more than enough.
We have full automatic cow factories where even the birth of calfs is done by robots and the cows have sensors so they can use playmachines and go outside or inside when they want. We also have such farms for chickens. The animals are free to move around where and when they want. All these animals can enjoy the green gras whenever they want.
At 5:00 you complained about rocky soil. Put a glasshouse on the tarmac of an old airfield, and you are in business , 2 acres is good for 1 million $ a year in vegetables. With some investment you can double that.
States like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Arkansas have signed contacts to set up large greenhouse areas with LED lights and automated irrigation to produce top crops. That was in 2019. Here is a nice agricultural innovation we use over here. The coffee ground from all coffee shops (the Starbuck type) is collected, put in big bags, then they make small cuts in the bag and use that to grow mushrooms. Organic food with waste produce. BTW there is one condition required I did not mention, as it is a commercial business over here. Oh, here is another. Because of global heating, the US is now capable of growing coffee, instead of importing it from Africa. Now just find an invester.
My sister went to University Wageningen, and the majority of her fellow students were... farmers! Highly educated farmers on university, which is pretty amazing. You probably wouldn't expect farmers to go to university, but here they do. I personally happened to have worked for Foodvalley (I designed and illustrated their end results documents of 2021), and it's amazing what kind of innovations they brought, and how fast they are growing, nationally and internationally. Their main goal is a global sustainable food system, and looking at what they did here, I'm curious what the future will bring. This is also a prime example why we happily pay our taxes. This kind of stuff pays off, and we see the results on the regular.
fun fact all the legal weed growing businesses in america all uses dutch ways to grow their weed. 90% at least is grown with dutch inventions. colorado for example only uses dutch created growing techniques. so maybe they use it in the normal farming business as well

Note that this is by _export value_, not by absolute production. And then it also helps that if you are a small country, a sale of agricultural produce is an "export" much quicker, and quite a lot of exports goes to neighbouring countries, which is like the neighbouring state in the USA. Having relative high value products like flowers helps. Still there are also staples, like potato and onions.
Hi, your comment about the difference between export value and absolute production is key. I am currently reading a report from WUR on the evolution of dutch agriculture and its comparative advantages such as location, "flatness" and well-developed road and rail infrastructure. Do you know where can I find more information about the numbers of the total agricultural production? Thanks.
So the answer is technology...the reason why the Netherlands is second only to the US in agriculture. We have Wageningen Agricultural High Tech University, where the smartest of the smartest get together in all kinds of fields of expertise. All of wich is way over my head!! But it is mindbogling; the Netherlands, one of the smallest with the biggest number of people per square mile, the second largest producing agricultural country in the world, in fact feeding the world!!
