- Headed back to camp in July of 2018. Using a 14 foot Sportspal canoe flatback and powered by a 2.5 HP Yamaha 2018. This is a great portable, lightweight system that will get you mobile on the water. The 2.5 HP Yamaha is an outstanding little outboard that sips gas. Very cheap way to get around. Was a lot of fun! Love this video. Thinking about doing the same thing. Nice. Thanx.
It is fun, these sportspal are so light, my and my 13 year old sun can put it on the car roof with ease. I have a 3.5hp Tohatsu (Evinrude) and it is more than enough to do good speed with little fuel consumption.
Very Fast with this nice motor
Just got my 12 foot pointed sportspal and a Honda 2.3 yesterday.cant wait to get in the water.
Bring a small gas can when you go out. Have fun!
How do you like it and how heavy is your canoe?
@@lov2playtn It's 55 lbs and love it.
Impressive speed. Nice to know I can add a motor to my S13 sportspal canoe. Do you trailer your canoe and remove your trolling motor? I just added a side motor mount. Looks like i wouldn’t have to remove it while traveling. I also trailer it.
I strap it to the roof of my little Chevy and put the outboard in the trunk. Can't get more portable than that! Beats paddling!
I just have a Toyota Tacoma 5’ bed so I trailer it. Going tomorrow, the first this year. I have a video on RUclips when I got it. I’ll post a video of my trip later. Thanks for the reply
@@teaglet Great! Can't wait to see the video. Have a good trip!
Exactly what I'm looking for. Looks like that little Yamaha pushes very nicely.
Thank you for the video.
It's a great setup! I'm very happy with my Yamaha.
Howdy ,
My wife and I live - work and travel Full Time with our RV. I'm thinking of purchasing a Sportspal S-15 to explore lakes and reservoirs in our travels . How do you like your Sportspal Canoe so far?
I love it!
Glad you're enjoying The Sportspal. Cheers
Thanks.
I’m thinking of getting a Sportspal s13 could I haul it on a roof rack of a truck? And if I was to try and climb into the boat wow risky would it be that I might swamp it
The canoe is very light and very easy to strap to a truck. As for climbing in depends on how good your balance is. No different than any other canoe or small boat. If you know someone that has a canoe or small boat try getting in and see. It takes practice. I've never had any issues. I can stand in mine and cast. Good luck.
Hi Gerry. I was wondering what the shaft length is on your motor - 15" or 20"? Thanks.
I'm using a 20" shaft.
I’m doing similar set up bro so efficient and easy
Nice lake
Nice set-up. I have a tohatsu 3.5hp on my wenonah backwater. The canoe and outboard are both bullet proof. Try a 6 hp suzuki like i do. Mindbender.
The boat is rated for a 3hp outboard. Anything stronger can damage the boat.
Could you explain how did you mount your motor? Is it a double pointed, Square back, or wide stern? Thanks.
Square back.
Tonto never went that fast.
Tonto has a new horse! Yamaha!
Lovely video Gerry. I am in the boat with you every time I watch it. What is your cruising speed at wide open throttle?
8-12 MPH depending on the load.
How about if you are over loaded?
@@chdoch Probably around 8 MPH for a heavy load.
Have you got a downrigger on there? I have exact same motor and sports pal. Wondering about stability with a downrigger.
Never tried it. I'm sure it would work.

Hi Gerry, I've had one for a year with a 2.5 Suzuki on it. Still find it a bit tippy when motoring along or when standing to cast. Considering one or two outriggers to help make me feel more comfortable in it. Is that a Garmin Striker 4? How did you mount it? I'm just about to order one. I see you plane out pretty well, guessing you put weight up front? Steve
My sportspal is extra wide so it's harder to tip. Yes that is the Striker 4. I used a piece of 1/2" plastic squared off and clamped it to the cross bar with a adjustable pipe clamp.. The clip on round mount is screwed into the plastic. Looked everywhere for something similar to this but unfortunately had to create my own. Hope this helps!
Might make a video on how to for this.
smooth sound
Hi love your setup ..would you recommend a trolling motor as oppose to a outboard motor ?
You can use a trolling motor but your limited to how far you can go. Having an outboard allows you to go a greater distance much faster pace. I use the trolling motor for shallow and heavy weeded areas for casting. It all depends on how far and how quick you want to get to your destination. Also consider the weight of marine batteries (if you use more than one) to move your boat.
@@GerryDX thank you ...wouldn't a battery be lighter than an outboard motor i would use the canoe just for pleasure fishing ..
@@tsocanuck It depends on the type and size of battery. The Yamaha outboard 2.5 weighs about 37 lbs and a small gas can about 2-5lbs. A 55 lbs thrust Minn Kota weighs about 25 lbs and a good AGM marine battery about 50-70 lbs. The outboard can run for a long time and the trolling motor is limited to the battery. You also have to fasten the battery to the boat or canoe. So lots to consider.
Hi there. Do you recommend the s14 or s12? My set up and weigh would be same. Would be traveling in the bed of a pickup. Also have a brand new 2.5 yam. Cheers
Go bigger with the 14'. Only weighs 58 lbs. Good luck.
@@cigartime5384 It's up to you. The wider option allows you to cast your fishing line standing with less chance of tipping. I have the wider one.
@@cigartime5384 I don't portage. Ask the Sportspal retailer for info about portaging.
