#askmark Hi, Mark. Thank you for the great answers on AskMark. I have a question regarding hose protectors on miflex high pressure hoses: Why do the LP miflex hoses come without a protector, but the HP comes with hose protectors fitted? I thought the miflex hoses didn't take damage from that kink, like rubber hoses do. Can I remove the hose protector from my HP miflex hose? I would love your insight on this.

#askMark I have an XDeep Zen BP&W with a steel backplate and DIR harness. I'm off to the Red Sea in a couple of weeks and am thinking of swapping out the steel backplate for an aluminium one. Can I use any aluminium BP (I'm looking at one that costs around a third of the cost of an XDeep one) but I don't know it will fit. I'm particularly concerned about the crotch strap. I love the Y shaped crotch strap on my XDeep and don't want to have to rejig the harness. Thanks

The airforce of India had to rescue so many hikers and mountain climbers in the Himalaya, they don’t even start if you have no insurance to cover the costs. Certainly a harsh decision, but somewhat understandable.

Hi mark, just wandering if you will be doing a video on the new Apeks dive computer, what are your thoughts on it & will it pair with shearwater transmitter?

Yes, right now I'm just waiting for Apeks to send me a DSX to show you all.
It probably will work with the Swift. In the manual it states: 'Swift transmitters may be used with other brands of dive computers that are compatible with Shearwater transmitters. However, this operation cannot be guaranteed.'

I have a Scubapro Everdry 4 suit. I'm thinking about changing neoprene cuffs to latex with Kubi dry glove system.
What's your thought on the dry gloves? Can air in your gloves cause problems? I dive in Scottish sea lochs so water not the warmest.
I have really thin wrists so water getting in my wrist seals are always a problem and find I wear a latex wrist seal over the neoprene to try and limit the leaks. Could the dry glove system be the answer I am looking for?

If you're looking at an ally plate for saving weight on flights, you may as well just pay extra for extra luggage weight. The 2 ish kg you'll save by switching to an ally plate just isn't worth the faff or money. Even if it costs you an extra £20-40 each way on luggage, that's still less than a plate and gives you room to breathe on the rest of your luggage.
Personally, I'd just take my steel plate and take less weight elsewhere. Could also cheat a bit and just wear your plate through the airport.
#AskMark What do you think about Vindicator type valve wheels that show green when open and red when closed? Worthwhile or not so much?
They're ok, an extra indicator can only be a good thing but, I'll always check the valve is open properly myself
#AskMark. Thanks for the very informative videos Mark! I have a question about long term storage of tanks between diving seasons. I've read that it's best not to store them all empty but also not all the way full. Seems that anywhere between 100 to 500 psi is recommended. What is wrong about storing them for say 6 months at 3000 psi? Why is this not recommended and what is your opinion about this? Thanks!
Good question, at higher pressures the gases inside are at a higher concentration which can accelerate chemical reactions and in some rare cases it can accelerate rust and even carbon monoxide inside your cylinder.
If you're planning long-term storage it's best to leave your tank mostly empty but, not completely, and get a fresh air fill before your next dive.
#ask mark hello Mark I was wondering if you think it is ok to have a separate hose low pressure hose to have just for the DSMB to inflate. As so not to fumble around trying to reconnect to the BCD. What is your thoughts?
Sure, I've dived with plenty of divers that run a 2nd LPI hose over their left shoulder so that they don't need to disconnect their inflator. Give the end a good clean between dives and keep it organized but, it shouldn't be a problem.

Why technical divers carry lift bag instead of DSMB?

A lift bag has multiple functions. If you carry a lift bag then you can use it to salvage, as a surface marker buoy and to control your buoyancy if your BCD fails.
dSMBs don't tend to have very much lift capacity so, if you had to only bring one, some tech divers would rather the lift bag.
Not all though, dSMBs are made to be much easier to deploy so a lot of divers will still carry one
