That's terrific, a lovely lady, soft spoken and humble, a beautiful soul, poetic and absorbing to read. Good news. Human Acts was extraordinary. Everyday, at almost every hour we are all regarded as statistics, more writers should rage against this form of darkness that cloaks our world in such darkness. Wonderful!!!!
Han Kang grew up traumatised in Gyuangju where a politcal massacre occured. She moved a lot due to her dad's job and didn't have any friends except books at home. Her best friends have been books and she even owns a small book store in Seoul!!
I'm korean and the algorithm brought me here:) Her win was unexpected even in korea. And now I am so pleased that I can read works by nobel prize author in original language. 한강 작가님 축하드립니다🎉
Hello from Korea! Thanks for sharing the amazing, terrific moment! 💖 Hope more Korean literary fictions receives attention and love from booklovers all over the world...🥳📖💖
I sincerely congratulate author Han Kang on winning the Nobel Prize in Literature. What a joy it is to be able to read a work that won the Nobel Prize in Literature in my own language. I never imagined something like this would happen. It's fantastic!!!!
Wooow. I’m in awe almost. I’ve read three by her. Human Acts and We Do Not Part are (ofc) very high up on the tbr. And that was before this announcement 😄 I’m so thrilled for her, how amazing is this. I was completely blown away by The Vegetarian, so confronting and exceptionally written/structured. Loved.
Wow & Well deserved!! Kudos to the Nobel Committee for expanding their scope beyond the English speaking countries. I read The Vegetarian when it first came out and am looking forward to reading her other works. It was almost traumatizing to read The Vegetarian due to the intensity and depth but I couldn’t help reading it twice! I wish I could read Korean as I’m sure there’s much lost in transition.
What a wonderful result! I read 'We do not part' last December and I thought it was absolutely incredible! My definite favourite of hers I have read. I've read 3 of Han Kang's novels so far and am excited to get to some of her other works! 🎉
for me the best part of a non-English writer wining is most of their books usually get English translations. Here's hoping Han Kang gets all her works translated now.
Thank you for sharing your reaction and numerous authors. As a Korean reader, l was touched by this amazing news. I think Han gang is definitely a great author✨️🌱
Thank you for sharing. Han Kang is such a wonderfully unique, and challenging writer. I really enjoy reading her books, and like you said each is very different. I always look forward to what comes next from her. Very happy she has been chosen for the Nobel Prize for Literature for 2024!
A slightly surprising win but welcome. I have read three of her novels so far and coincidentally have a buddyread of The White Book planned for November
Excellent! I've read the exact same 3 books of hers you did, and had very much the same reactions to them. Her last one, Greek Lessons, I bought and started reading, but it bogged down and I didn't finish. Maybe I'll have to try again. And try her new book when it arrives.
Today I am proud, of the Svenska Akademin and to be a part of the Swedish culture. It is not always like that when it comes to the Nobel Prize in literature.
How lovely! I didn't know that the judges had to read the whole work of the author, I think that's a bit unfair towards prolific authors - would be better if they could limit it to, say, 5 books per author. Surely you can grasp an author's merit this way.
Thrilling and exciting choice! This is the kick-in-the-pants that the Nobel Literature committee sorely needed if it dares to call itself a global awards entity, even if we picked the wrong Asian female for the honor. At the same time though, The Vegetarian was one of the most unpleasant reading experiences I've ever had. Some will say that's the entire point, but still. I vowed that I'd never read another book from this woman after that, but here I am ordering a copy of Greek Lessons today lol. So there you go.
That was a surprise! The news yesterday had an Australian (that I have not read) as the favorite. I scrolled down here while the ads were playing and saw the links to your reviews. Amazed that I recognized immediately.
Wow! I can't believe I have been ignoring The Vegetarian for so long. It was pretty popular in Romania some years ago, but I just judged it by its cover, literally and the cover seemed kind of commercial/superficial. Lol, marketing is really important for books😢
Oh I'm really quite surprised! First time I've ever read a Nobel Prize winner before they won the prize, and probably one of the few times that I've actually heard of the author before they've won. Shame I really didn't like The Vegetarian. I have The White Booik and Human Acts at home, I'll have to move them up my TBR.
Feel bad, but I had not heard of her, although the title Human Acts sounds vaguely familiar so maybe I had heard someone discuss the book but didn't remember the authors name. I've put Human Acts on my TBR - sounds good. I see our local city library already has all copies out, and plenty of holds/requests on both this and The Vegetarian, so might have get on Kindle if I want to read anytime soon!
She's no Sully Prudhomme, but I'm not baffled or upset to see her win. :) The scope of the prize is so huge, and the secrecy of the 'short list' so profound, that I can't help but walk away just a little disappointed each year. Thought I had one or two of her books, but I don't have any.
Of all the nobelists across the past hundred years or so the only one whose books were truly special was Sinclair Lewis. And to echo Anthony Burgess, 'I'd read Babbitt right now.' The other incredible novel is Elmer Gantry, which sews together the greatness that makes a story worth telling and the ordinary failures of the flesh to which we are all susceptible. Also, I've always enjoyed his Arrowsmith, a story about the chemist who solved the plague. It's very good.
Many people believe the war and atrocities occurring around the world now may have also contributed to winning this prestigious award because her books tell the human violence and historical and political trauma of pain and suffering but in a very poetic, beautiful, and unique way for readers to sympathize. Congratulations Han Kang. I am very happy for you and your wonderful country. We are all very proud of you for all your amazing work. I am definitely getting copies of your books. Thank you and God bless!!
It is about time the Nobel Prize went to an openly Gay writer. It would send an enormous message to the world that persecution against LGBT people is criminally wrong.
The Nobel Prize is decided by political correctness and has been for at least a decade or more. Political agendas mean much more than good writing or plot or character development. It’s great if an author can incorporate all this in the writing, but number one on the list of prerequisites IS correct agenda.

Loved "The Vegetarian" and "Greek Lessons". And it's nice to see the Nobel awarding a South Korean artist.

I am stunned. Pleased, but stunned.
A fantastic surprise!

Huge surprise! Love it!
Very surprising! Thanks for describing several books; I want to try one of them.
Excellent.
Excited.
I liked the Vegetarian
반갑습니다. 유익한 시간이었어요^^
Even though I have yet to read a book by her, I was really pleased to hear! The Vegetarian has been on my tbr for ages!

🎉🎉 I really appreciate your passion.
You are an inspiration for reading.
Thank you so much! 😊📚

Winning the Nobel prize must be dynamite. Best wishes everyone.
Terrific choice.
I love how legit happy you are than Han Kang won, I can only imagine how overwhelmed you would be if JOC won.
Love this choice as a winner.

What a treat this video was 🥰 thank you so much for bringing so much joy to fellow readers ❤
Love your reaction! 🎉🎉🎉

Thanks for giving some background. I now have to read the winner myself. 😊💙

Yes, that’s a very logical solution! 📚

Yes! 😊📚
So glad you do these videos!!!

Solenoid is one of my favorite novels ever too!!

oops I've actually dnfed the Vegetarian 😅 but I'll definitely give her another try now
현장을 생생히 중계해 줘서 재밌네요.

We are all very proud of you for all your amazing work. I am definitely getting
copies of your books. Thank you and God bless!!
Please! Someday Murakami will be honored!
I am so bummed. I don't understand Oates not winning. If anyone deserves it, it's her. And she's 86....
Do you think that Julian Barnes should be on your long list?
It seems like nobody guessed this one 😂 having read two of her books and not enjoyed, I'm a bit disappointed.
I am underwhelmed by the result.
Or definitely, Vladimir Sorokin
I guess it is because he wouldn't take it, that Pynchon is still not the winner.
Yup, Susan Sontag is saying some whack stuff...
First comment!
It is about time the Nobel Prize went to an openly Gay writer. It would send an enormous message to the world that persecution against LGBT people is criminally wrong.
I definitely agree.
That pc I object to. The prize is not for pc.
The Nobel Prize is decided by political correctness and has been for at least a decade or more. Political agendas mean much more than good writing or plot or character development. It’s great if an author can incorporate all this in the writing, but number one on the list of prerequisites IS correct agenda.
The prize won’t be credible until Murakami wins.
Even Murakami wouldn't like this comment at all.
