This video came up in my feed today and i had to watch it. Myself i am born in Luton in 1970 and moved to Clophill in 1973. I lived there till oct 1977 and now live in Norway. I remember my mother knowing this woman in a cottage on my way to school, she was the witch of the village. She always fascinated and scared me. I remember her cottage as dark and full of old furniture and things. I have heard the stories about St. Marys church before. I liked and subscribed and i am off to watch part 2.
I lived in Flitwick and remember the talk at middle school about this church and the rituals that still happened in the 90s at midnight on Halloween. Cutting of chicken heads etc. Used to scare me a bit but got you thinking.
A real blast from the past. In 1970, I was part of a group of girls taking part in a unsupervised orienteering exercise for our Duke of Edinburgh award. We came across Clophill old church. As described ,there were many black magic symbols and evidence of group gathering as well a desecrated graves. The atmosphere inside the existing walls was thick and heavy. No sound of birds or country noises could be heard although they were there outside the church. While fascinated,we did not linger long as we felt both watched and threatened . One member of the group was sure she saw a figure in the tower.I was at a boarding school in Bedford and had heard tales of witchcraft around the area, especially Ampthill where 1 of my nonboarding friends lived and invited me to visit occasionally at weekends. I had not heard of Clophill church until we came upon it that day and even now,40 plus years later can remember the menace and silence within the ruins of that building. I was amazed to see this you tube vlog. Thank you
Wow! Great memories thank you! I am about your age and it seemed like we went on so many more adventures as teens Our Girls school had an annual trip to the UK It was something you had to earn a spot on! But the old lady that was the chaperone? Had zero control over any of us once we got there! We were all @ 17 & had such fun adventures
He did have a ceremony with others present, to re-inter Jenny's bones. As for consecrating the ground, I read an interesting Church of England book recently, that said grounds needn't ever be 're-consecrated' because no matter what happens on them, they still remain consecrated. An interesting thought! Thanks for yours.
@@IntoTheFog I didn't know that! My reasoning behind re-consecrating the church and tombs was as an act for the black magic cultists to see and probably stop them from doing it again! Kind of like what they did with nailing a stake on the corpse of a person suspected of being a vampire! thanks for the information!
@@IntoTheFog I think it is the building, and possibly some of its fittings, which is de-consecrated, during the final service of the church, by the Bishop, when it closes down. But if human remains, remain in the ground, unless Home Office permission is given for exhumation and reinterment elsewhere, the ground in which they lie is still considered 'blessed', and any new owner of the property has to negotiate how they are to accommodate the remains respectfully. Should they wish to ever remove the remains they would have to exhume them before the ground could be considered free for secular use.
Like many other subscribers, RUclips recommended your channel. After watching the first five minutes of your content I knew this was going to be the start of a beautiful friendship 😊
I lived in Flitwick as a child and I remember talk at school about the Clophill church and black magic rituals that we're still going on well into the 90s I've moved away from Bedfordshire and havnt heard or read anything about it since. Until today that is. 👍
It's like the church tracked you down and finally found you! OR the RUclips Algorithm did it. ha ha. Thanks for your comment, David. Great to hear from someone who lived nearby.
@@Gill-pc9nm I never watched the Harry Potter Films. Was a teenager by then. The Town has a silent W so pronounced Flitick, its on the River Flit and "wick" I believe is the old Saxon word for settlement.I remember that from first school :)
Wow, can't believe that I somehow stumbled across this video. Back in 1972 I was working as a nanny in Barton-le-clay. I had a friend who would come and take myself and the children out for drives to visit places. One day she asked me if I would like to go see church ruins and I agreed it would make a nice drive and outing with the children. Little did I know the absolute terror that would await me as we entered the lane to the church. I ended up laying on the floor of the car begging and pleading to go no further. My friend must've thought I'd gone mad, but I managed to pull myself together as we neared the church. We did get out of the car and look around briefly. Graves had been broken open and tombstones toppled. We left and never went back; it was truly the most terrified I've ever been and I'm 70 years old now.
That is fascinating, Carole. May I ask - were you already aware of the strange goings on up there? Is that why you were so effected by the place, because you knew the history? Or did you feel that way, even without knowing? Thanks for the comment, by the way. I'm hoping to grow my channel, so comments like yours help.
@@IntoTheFog Hi, no I didn't have a clue and had never been in that area before. I have had instances all my life of things happened to me like this. I have learned to deal with them over the years and it wouldn't bother me now.
A friend sent me this. I was at a boarding school just up the road from this church. In summer, at weekends we were allowed to take a picnic tea and walk or cycle around the area. One afternoon a group of friends and I went up to the church. we were walking around the graveyard looking at the desecrated graves and then went into the church. There were black magic symbols on the walls, it was very creepy. We went back out into the sunshine and standing by what I think must have been Jenny's grave was a woman dressed from head to toe in black wearing a black face veil. and black hat. We all screamed and fled back to our bikes, all thoughts of our picnic tea forgotten. When we were in the 6th form our rooms looked out on to the roof, sometimes at night we would climb out and sit on the dormers. We sat looking towards the church at Clophill and often saw lights moving around. This would have been in the early 70's.
@@pennyfisher8389 I'm glad, from what you are saying that we didn't linger too long. Definitely felt a presence and a feeling of threat. We took saw the occult symbols and desecrated graves
Brilliant narrative, Reverend. Unlike certain American paranormal investigation channels, this narrative, with occasional footage of the places where the events were played out, is, to say the least, stands out.
Thank you for the encouraging comment! I hope that if my channel gets bigger, I'll be able to go out to more locations to film there. Many thanks for taking the time to watch, and share you thoughts.
It’s brilliant seeing all the images and your filming at the church, Peter. I grew up during the 80s a few miles away and the church had such a terrifying reputation back then! It’s always fascinated me. Looking forward to the next episode. I’m intrigued about your own paranormal experience there. When I visited last just before Christmas I also had an odd experience. 👻
I’d love to know more about your experience. Is it in the podcast episode you mentioned, as I plan to listen to it. Where did you live that was so close?
I’ve actually done 3 episodes on the church. The first episode 9 just tells the history. Episode 10 is the paranormal stuff. Then there’s a bonus episode which came out on the 1st Jan this year about my visit there on the 18th December. I lived at RAF Henlow from age 7-11 it’s not too far. I’m now in Biggleswade (podcast is Weird in the Wade so only a few miles away .) My experiences on my last visit were just some pareidolia where I thought I saw a giant standing in big doorway to church. But I then felt I could hear something like chanting. I became very afraid. But I stood up to my fear. When I was 8 I briefly attended a church in Biggleswade where the devil was believed to be very much real and on the loose. So the Clophill church was seen as the most evil place - like it was satan’s headquarters. I think I was experiencing my own fears at the church that day. Once I shouted out loud that I wasn’t afraid. I was fine.
@@nataliedoig4804 Every kid knew about this place in the 80s (i live about 20 miles away in Hitchin) i went over there in 93 to have a look and didnt really get any vibes from it or foreboding. very interesting. I'll check you videos on it too.
Same, it seems spooky to us locals but probably because we tell ourselves it is. I’m glad they stopped all the crowds from going up there on Halloween as the nearby graveyard is still in use.
I love Mr Ballen too and have watched him from the beginning but there is so much space for storytellers on this platform! I think I found my other favorite storyteller too!! 😊
My mother & I visited a small pretty church in Bury St Edmond’s many many years ago & the minute we entered it felt decidedly evil to the both of us. We walked up to the alter area & felt like there were many eyes looking at us, it was dreadful, we were terrified to move. We felt awful to run in a church but run we did, out the door & went home. Yes, churches can indeed be evil or haunted, this one certainly was 🙋🏻♀️🇬🇧

Well, I'm a paranormal investigator and author. My friend, Dale Kaczmarek, and I spent three weeks ghost hunting in your amazing country. It was the third visit for both of us. Our friend, the author Paul Adams, lives in Luton, so Clop Hill was one of the first places he took us on the incredible itinerary he put together for us. We had an unforgettable time, and I would love to go back there sometime.
Random recommendation from RUclips and I am so happy I watched!! You have a new subscriber. In this sea of AI voices and (sometimes) poorly researched topics, your narration is very refreshing! It’s just really, really great. Love it! Onto part 2!!

Ah, that's great to hear you were an FT reader. It's still out there in certain shops. I sometimes see it in the major supermarkets, but its never sure where it'll be. I think most people read it on subscription now? Thanks for watching, Bill.
You are a great storyteller Your diction and grammar (obviously you passed your "O' levels for English). What a pleasure to hear a story told by a living human.
I live in Luton and drive past the village every day for work, and have visited the church about 3 times, even during the Day you can feel there is a dark energy in the place.
Had this vid pop up randomly on my feed this morning, I waited till this evening to watch it as I had to drive 50 miles this morning to view a car, I've just started watching it now and cannot belive it, the car I viewed this morning was in ampthill, I've never been there before, I find that quite mad !!!
Hello Peter, I have just come across your post and so enjoyed it. I love the way you narrate the stories you present, no smoke and mirrors, no spooky voices just the truth behind these incidents. You are articulate and obviously passionate about what you post. I'm also glad of that, Andy! Thanks so much for the kindness and encouragement. Honoured to be likened to The Tape Library and Bedtime Stories! Thanks also for the comments and likes - it really does help
Never heard of Clophill before until I cycled past it on a cross country touring trip last week and thought "I bet this is haunted". That night I was staying in Milton Keynes and I fired up youtube on the laptop and this video was the first suggestion! I didn't search for it, was just the first video suggestion when I opened youtube. Spooky
My profile pic was from a band photo shoot taken in the church window (5.25) many years ago and is exactly how the photo came out (no filters). St Marys is the strangest place I've ever visited. As soon as I got out of the car, my whole mood changed. I felt so depressed and negative and even suicidal. Photos over, I got in the car and then felt fine again. That place is not right and as a local, I know many stories about it.
Wow! Just checked out your photograph. Very cool. Fascinating to hear about your experiences - would you ever want to share those with me? If I gather enough, there might be room to make a follow up video some time in the future. If so, you can email me at revpeterlaws@icloudcom. But no pressure. Thanks again!
Stumbled on your channel and love this video. I am a Canadian, my grandma was born and raised Reading so i love watching shows that include any and all history in Britain due to the amount of historical buildings that still stand there. Will be watching your show again asi do love the paranormal side of history.
Good luck to you! Challenging the thinking of a whole country can be met with pushback. Your such a lovely and intelligent man, and I think your country should be proud of you
As a local of Luton, me and my friends visited Clophil church after dark. The place was dark but was lit up by a full moon. All of us proceeded out side and sat on the grass area, earlier on I entered the church on my own, but didn't find anything strange. We ended up talking to a group of people who were dressed in black clothes etc the goth type. we all ended up having a nice talk under the full moon. We ended up going our seperate ways. I had no idea the history behind Clophill until I watched your video. Thank you.
I was born and raised in Luton and have heard many stories about clophill. One i remember was a police officer seeing a ghost of a little girl after he removed a small teddy bear from the site and then theres the countless stories of people going there on halloween night with ouija boards. One year while i was in school i heard that police had set up at Clophill (on Halloween) to stop people from going there and doing all sorts of nasty things. This video brought back many memories
I love stumbling on hidden YT gems. Your channel has been great at putting me to sleep because I can't go to sleep when it's quiet, having your videos play in the background helps out a lot.
Fantastic presentation , clear and articulate. The wife and i thoroughly enjoy this type of material. All the very best with the continued growth with your channel and anything else you may embark upon.
I decided a couple of years ago to visit some of the 'infamous' locations/churches that intrigued me when I was (much) younger. So I've been to Borley several times, including just last Easter weekend and St Botolph's, Lincolnshire amongst others - and I've never experienced anything other than the peace of the countryside. Clophill, not so peaceful despite the quiet surroundings, particularly walking around the graves farthest from the church itself, and I was very aware of the darkness at the base of the tower, it seemed darker than it should be considering the sunny day...if that makes sense. I thought that may be due to the orientation of the church, but still... Looking forward to Part 2!
I never believed in the supernatural, at all. Then I had the misfortune to do some work on an old house in the Leicestershire countryside. I won't go into the details, but what people are saying about Clophill, sounds very similar to my own experience. It was mid-summer, daytime, with other people around, yet, there was a heavy atmosphere about the place. Sunny, yet it felt dark. It was genuinely eerie, not a nice place to be.
G'day Reverend! Kylie in Oz. It's funny how our Heavenly Father shows us what channels we need! I write and your calm eloquent story-telling is just what I needed to switch off from the war of principalities going on 'out there' Thank you so much Reverend.
Frightful indeed. Loved Your delivery and editing Rev. Just found your channel and subscribed immediately. Perfect Sunday evening viewing, can't wait for more. Thanks for your efforts.

All in all a good listen to. And you got a new subscriber. I can't wait to explore your other offerings. Thanks.
I have loved the unexplained since I was about seven years old. I got my hands on my first “encyclopedia of the unexplained” type book at that age and spent much of an entire weekend lying on my bed being drawn into what would become a lifelong obsession. It was c.1974. I remember being absolutely horrified by the idea of spontaneous human combustion and unable to look away from the photographs of the victims. There were only about two or three images available and over the years they were the staple images used whenever articles or write ups about SHC showed up. Peter shared two of the images in this video and I was blown away and utterly excited to see so many more images and hear so many more incidents regarding SHC than I have ever, ever seen throughout my lifetime! Thank you so very much for your detailed videos, deep dive researches and sharing your obvious keen interest in “otherness”. One thing that interested me was the idea that could alcohol play a part? It triggered a thought…I’ve never been a big drinker of alcohol but when I was a younger woman I did have a few years where I did my share of partying. Every time I drank schnapps alcohol and got to the point of being quite tipsy, out of nowhere I would get a HOT feeling that would begin like a slow burn in the middle of my back and pick up speed moving up between my shoulders in the back over the tops of my shoulders and spread around to the top of my chest. It grew so uncomfortable in heat that I would seriously consider that I might need to call for help before I dropped dead! As soon as it came it would disappear just like that. It has happened to me four times and only when drinking schnapps. Could alcohol cause some sort of reaction with god knows what and cause someone to burst into flames? Who knows but I’m glad I don’t drink anymore, just in case.

Brilliant documentary, many thanks. I was a teenager in the 80’s and towards the end of the decade myself and my friends were driving, which enabled us to visit some of the creepiest places in West Sussex. We’re talking, amongst others, a derelict mental health unit called Roffey Park near Horsham with padded cells and other similar places of the same ilk. Definitely some underground places, notably a WW2 Pillbox, again near Horsham and one thing stands out in my memory… evidence of black magic was everywhere to be seen. Walls had been charred with fire and things like the Lord’s Prayer had been written backwards with pentagrams and burned-out candles everywhere (an old chapel springs to mind). For us it was a freaky adventure because everywhere we went, people had been before us, performed their rituals and then seemingly moved on - we never found anything we considered to be ‘active’. Thinking back on it, it seemed to be endemic that creepy places were used by an army of people for this purpose. Who were they? I have yet to gain an insight into their goings-ons and where are they now? As far as I’m aware, it doesn’t go on so much these days,so why back then? Are they all on the internet? Or don’t even exist anymore as groups because they can operate from their bedrooms with modern communications? I am not against these people in any way if they aren’t hurting anyone but I find it fascinating based on what I’ve seen, albeit as very, very scary stuff, and very well researched/organised and knowledge-based given that there was no internet then, just books and word-of-mouth. Thanks again for the vid, I’ll watch some more 👍🏻
Not only does it definitely still go on the ruling elites are up to their necks in satanic ritual abuse, adrenochrome and su moving demons. Its every day to them. You will never be famous in hollywood etc unless you have sold your soul.jesus warned us and we scoffed. Holly is the wood from which wands are made. It's a very very deep rabbit hole.
@@Thoralmir Yes I guess so. Depends on how you look at it, I suppose. It would take a lot to hurt my culture and in the case of my comment, nothing of any active heritage, e.g. pristine and non derelict, was actually damaged from what I could see, so no real harm done. Maybe if they wanted to rage a war on culture they would have targeted more visible premises, wouldn’t you think? This makes it all the more odd, and indeed spooky. Please feel free to disagree with me because this is a very interesting subject and very mysterious from my perspective. It is very un-talked about so maybe you or anyone else reading this can share your thoughts and experiences.
Terrific stuff! Clophill's always had a reputation for spooky stuff. It's a nice little village though and well worth a visit. The A6 there is also great fun on a motorbike. 🙂
Wow so interesting to see this...i went to college not far from clophill 25 yrs ago and had heard all the stories! so like all youngsters do! a group of us after hearing the stories about that church drove down there one night and oh god it was creepy...as u drive up its a single track and as we got closer the stereo was going mental and we completely bottled it but only option was to keep driving forward to turn around at the church or reverse all the way back....we locked our doors and reversed outta there and we were silent all the way home...ive never been back xx
Like many others I had this recommended to me, a truly well made and edited video that grabs the attention of the viewer! Well and truly looking forward to part 2!
Please look into St Botolph's church at Skidbrooke in Lincolnshire. It's known to have been used for dark rituals (there was some grainy footage on YT that some guy filmed in secret) and another clip supposedly showing a demon. This once beautiful country church has been desecrated, and there are symbols and stuff painted inside. Another well-known story from Lincolnshire is the legend of Tom Otter; I used to have to drive past the crossroads where he was gibbeted, and it always gave me chills. My friends father farmed that land, and she was totally convinced that he haunted the estate. Tom Otter was the last man to be hung in public in Lincoln, and there's a lot of unexplained doings that occurred following his death.
You will be the Next Mr Ballen , fantastic story telling and gripping from start to finish , wishing you the best of luck and may your channel flourish , a now new subscriber of your chanel, thank you for a fantastic story .
Early in my archaeological career, I was part of a team excavating the floor of an old church (it was subsiding due to coal mining beneath it and the foundations had to be reinforced). First day, the supervisor asked me to draw a section of an earlier church, down in a 1.5m trench. At my head height on top of the trench lay a skeleton. His name plate on the wall gave his name and date of death (late 19th Century). It was covered with loose soil but the cranium was still visible, including some hair and blood vessels. I had to work with my back to it and my skin crawled. Needless to say , I did not, unlike the two boys, eat my Spam sarnies!!
My goodness. I never realised you could still see visible blood vessels. Thanks for this fascinating comment...and I'm totally with you on the Spam Sarnies thing!

3rd Episode viewed and what now strikes me is the amazing SOUND DESIGN that Peter constructs for each of his stories. Not content with a one or two tracks of music and sound effects - he layers in overlapping voices and sounds to give you a sense of foreboding or dissonance. Really well done. (also one of the voice actors reminds me of the voice actor who has done the re-enactment of H.P Lovecraft's voice in some the documentaries about him)
Thankyou so much for commenting on the sound design as I spend a lot of time on that side of it. I chuckled when you said voice actors as the voices were just me putting accents on. 😂 I’m a fan of the HPLS Lovecraft dramas too.

Thank you

He should have made a public ceremony to Re-Consecrate the Church and the Tombs! Thanks for the video!

Wow Reverend, that Church looks incredible, what a legend on our very shores.
Indeed. The place really is a mixture of beauty and mystery. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Amazing work. I live in Luton and have investigated this location. Excellent and entertaining info.
How fascinating. How was your experience there? Thanks for the comment, too,
A friend sent me this.
Wow. When I read the bit about the woman with the black veil I felt a legit shiver. Thank you for sharing this.

The historian in me finds the history of, and behind the haunting more interesting than rhe investigation itself.
Excellent narration , great expression in your story telling .
Well done . I enjoyed the story very much . Thank you !!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Tom!
I’m now in Biggleswade (podcast is Weird in the Wade so only a few miles away .)
My experiences on my last visit were just some pareidolia where I thought I saw a giant standing in big doorway to church.
I was fine.

Right up there with Ballen in my opinion.

How fascinating that you felt that. Thanks so much for watching, and for the intriguing comment. Looking forward to sharing part 2 next weekend.

Amazing. I'm grateful for that, Trinity.
Except that they are hurting people's culture, identity, and spiritual beliefs.
As a fortean times reader it's nice to put a voice to a face, good luck with this venture rev.

Wow, thank you!
@@IntoTheFog What JohnJKelly said + improved embalming in the late 1800s.
Another example of excellent content - so so much credit to you for all your hard work & time dedicated to your content !! ❤
Ooooh! I’m so pleased YT recommended your channel today. Really great story telling. I’ve never heard of Clophill, but i shall certainly be checking it out. My family love visiting haunted/spooky places. We’ve done Borley church and many others. Thank you. I have subscribed. 😊👻💀
Delighted you found me! Thanks for the kind words.
This sounds like a Hammer Horror flick. Glad I came across this channel!
Ha ha, it really does! I'm glad you found the channel, too.
Superb narration. Thank you
Really glad you like it, Dave!
Hi Peter.
Just wanna say, you have a very good channel and I put a whole bunch of your videos in a playlist tofall asleep to.
Thank you.
You are truly captivating. I will enjoy your stories to fall asleep to. Thanx
Ennismore Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 ♥️ 😊
Wow, thank you! I fall asleep to things to talking and music too. Though, I wonder if the jump scares ever wake you back up? ha ha. Thanks again.
@@IntoTheFog thanks for all your work. your channel is going to be huge. As for voice actors ... heheheh... if i can get myself away from climate tech i will finish of my tv anthology horror series "London Screaming" and offer you the role of narrator, one Nick Hawksmoor ....Yes i visited all the churches and read too much Iain Sinclair!
Peter, You are so very talented...Not just your Phenomenal story telling, but your Sound Design and You doing your own voice overs. Great editing as well.
This Channel will definitely be growing, with more Subscribers.
A Fan of Yours in AMERICA.

Very well narrated. Loved the editing as well. Quality stuff & you deserve much more followers.
Ah, thanks for mentioning the editing. I do this all myself on my phone, so it's nice to think people enjoy that side of it. Thanks for watching!
Excellent and the quality is great.
Very informative
Not much fills me with horror and dismay, but the moment you uttered the words "spam sandwiches"... 😱🤢
Ha ha! Yep - TRUE HORROR.
Hey! I just happen to love spam!, I grew up on it!!!! 😊
That's great !
Grew up on Spam! I’ve been to the Spam Museum in Austin MN too, but then being from (rural) MN it’s kind of mandatory to at least try it. Mac n cheese with diced Spam brings back memories.
Ham and pork shoulder, the horror...🙄
Great video! Love the presentation style and the fluid synopsis. Subscribed.
Subscribed and going to part two, I'm hooked thank you.
RUclips has been recommending this video to me for weeks now, and I only just got around to clicking on it. I'm glad I did, as this is quality content. Happy to subscribe to your channel, as I do like this genre.
You are a fabulous videographer , storyteller and narrator , i look foreward to watching more of your videos Thankyou so much . I was completely enthralled
That's so nice of you to say! This was literally just me and my iphone, lurking about!
I just found this video, and holy moly, I LOVE the way you tell stories! Looking forward to more 👻
This was very well done indeed!
I'm really pleased you liked it, Sharon.
Wonderfully creepy. I write frightening stories and find real incidents like this fascinating. Thanks for a great delivery.
As soon as that old church comes into view, you get the most awful feeling.
Interesting. Can you expand on that a bit?
Evil can be felt even if you aren't discerning
@@IntoTheFog it's like a sinking, almost sick feeling
