This is Jaclyn's Mom & its my recipe. The good news for those who are concerned about sugar. You can make the recipe using artificial sweetener that measures cup per cup like sugar. If you don't tell anyone, they won't notice the difference. The pecan topping is better if its chopped. If you don't want to do the pecan topping, you can cook the sweet potatoes mixture for 30 minutes and then top with a bag of miniature marshmallows & then place back in oven and cook till the marshmallows are golden. If you are limited for time you can use canned sweet potatoes but you'll want to rinse them well and you may want to cut back on some of the sugar.

I have been making something similar to this for years now. If I don't make it at every holiday, there is a revolt. If I don't make enough to send leftovers home with everyone, there is fighting and blood over who gets it! Mine doesn't call for the orange, though. I may have to try adding that at Christmas. I also roast my sweet potatoes. I just like the flavor roasting gives them better. I adjust the sugar depending on who is going to be there. We have some diabetics in the family, so I will make a small portion with that nasty fake sugar for them, but I would never give it to anyone who didn't have to have it. As a blood cancer survivor, we do not put anything in our bodies that doesn't come from the ground naturally. Oh, and mine has coconut in it!

Oh Pooh... I either sub out the sugar, cut back, or eat a tiny bit. I literally make sweet potatoes with sweetness 2 times a year the rest of the time I treat them like a potato. My aunt doesn’t eat sugar (health reasons) so she’s experimented and found honey is easier on her. It would be very easy to change the sweetener in this but to be fair I’ve been cooking for a couple decades lol.

This is a life hack that I learned by accident for mashing potatoes or sweet potatoes. I couldn't find my master and had people coming for dinner..... Well I popped my potatoes into my kitchenaid mixer with the paddle attachment; added my butter turned on slow at first to see if it would work which it did. It makes easy work of potatoes or sweet potatoes! Never going back to hand masher again.

As A Brit, I've never seen this here but am familiar with it on my holidays to the US. Aldi over there does a great sweet potato casserole around Christmas time, but it's a very American thing I think.
It is delicious in small quantities, but in the video, does use excessive amounts of sugar. Each to their own.

My grandma makes the best sweet potato casserole if anyone wants to try here’s the recipe she has continuously changed things through out the years that she made it and she said she finally got it just perfect and I have to totally agree with her
•Boil 4 pounds sweet potatoes till soft then let cool
•Peel potatoes, mash them in big bowl
•Crack one egg whisk in separate bowl and then mix in with potatoes
    •1 tea spoon of vanilla
•6 table spoons of stick butter and mix in slowly (melt butter for 20 secs or less)
    •1/2 tea spoons of cinnamon
•1 1/2 cup of raisins and mix
•2/3 cups of sugar and mix
    •Grease glass pan with butter
    •spread mixture in pan
    Nut topping ~
•2/3 cups of brown sugar :compact it down in measuring cup
    •2/3 cups chopped pecan nuts
•4 table spoons of flour : don’t compact it down in measuring cup, make sure it’s fluffy
•4 table spoons of butter : dice into small squares
•Then Pastry blinder it all together
    •Spread on top of casserole
Bake for 350 for 25 mins

I hope y'all find this very buried comment. I've been making something similar for many moons. Difference is I add a little Grand Marnier, and I decrease the eggs and sugar and add unsweetened applesauce. That cuts lots of calories. I will try the topping once but it's too decadent for me. I aim to keep this healthy. And clearly you can also use pumpkin instead of sweet potatoes. Forget about that crap with marshmallows! This is the bomb recipe.

    Jack, nice video.
Although you put in a link to the recipe, when Jacqueline makes the dish she starts out with 6 cups of sweet potatoes. Then, the quantity of the other ingredients is not mentioned. It is "some". Add some eggs, add some sugar, etc. It may have been nervousness that she omitted the quantities, but it would have been nice to know the quantities as she was adding to the dish rather than having to look them up in your link.
However, the final product looked great and everyone seemed to enjoy it. 👍
I did go to your link and saw the recipe with all the quantities listed which satisfied the "nit picker" in me. 😀

The recipe looks like its calling for 11 1/2 cups of sugar because he forgot to put a space between the 1 so it looks like 11/2 and some people are committing because they don't relies it's only 1 1/2 cups. I hope this helps out others that thought like I did when I first glanced at the sugar amount but then saw that the space was missing... Great Recipe! Thanks!!!

I was thinking it might make it have an orange taste. I never heard of adding orange either.

I love all the Euro-people cracking about all the sugar in this recipe.... Are you going to eat the whole damn thing at once? Yea, didn't think so.
Yes, America eats a lot of sugar per day, but out of the top 15 countries around the world for sugar consumption, Europe has 9 of the 15 countries... Germany is #2 and Netherlands is #3; UK is number 7. And don't be so proud of that either, UK... The only thing stopping you from being #2 is 9g of sugar, which is about 2 ears of corn.
    So, seriously, let it go.

Rocky1115 I think most peoples reaction to the sugar is the fact that sweet potato is already sweet. I bet if you roasted them in the oven rather than boiling them you could reduce the sugar down maybe even leave it out altogether. Roasting them makes them so much sweeter.

@@kingdarko Bananas are already even sweeter but we make banana bread and apple pies. Sweet potato casserole is ONCE A YEAR. It sounds more like people want to put the Americans down because it makes them feel better. That's what aggravates some of us. It's arrogant.

I can see what is in it, just not how much.
I know 6 cups of mashed sweet potatoes and 4 eggs.
Can someone please tell me the amounts of the rest of the ingredients?
    Thanks
