  • Join Otto and I once more for another flight! This time we went up to St. Augustine from Kissimmee under Instrument Flight Rules!
    The approach controller tried to give us a GPS approach, however we are not GPS equipped in the aircraft we fly, and so had to request the LOC only. The glideslope on the ILS was out of service which left the LOC as the only option.
    In the video I fly the first leg to KSGJ, however Otto flew the return leg back to Kissimmee. The video for that trip is on Otto's channel:

    Enjoy the flight!

    I know this is an old video, but I loaded it up because I'm about to start my instrument training. No GPS, single VOR/DME. It'll be a challenge but I'm excited to start

      +Kara Goodman brilliant! That's cool that you got to hear him on the video.. I've got a lot of respect for the approach controllers.. They are very very very good at what they do..

    He totally set you up for a response you did not properly acknowledge. When he told you to keep your speed up throughout the approach the proper response from YOU should have been, "Sir, I'm given 'er all she's got!" Don't think he wasn't looking for that! LOL!! Nice vid.

    very nice job! I like the relay attempt with 2Pn, nicely done there. I know you're not asking for advice, but if you're interested, you can shorten your initial calls to ATC in the radar environment, swapping the "checking in 4200 for 5000" with "4200 climbing 5000" or "4200 for 5000" if you prefer the 'for'. The AIM lists 'for' if memory serves, but a lot of pilots prefer to use 'climbing' or 'descending'. In any case, the 'checking in' part that you can skip. I know it's quick, but every word counts when ATC is busy, and they appreciate the brevity.
    I know how hard it is to sync and edit multiple video tracks, plus add all of the titles. You did a great job with the flight and the post production.

      +coma13794 Thanks for the advice! Sometimes I do catch myself rambling with ATC but usually try to keep it as brief as possible.
      The videos are quite hard to line up as you say but it is really nice to know that people enjoy them! Thank you for your kind words!

    Very nice flight. Finally got to see Lewis flying in the left seat. So are you guys in the US just for flight training? Or do you live there? Is the plan to get your ATPL or is this just a hobby?

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  8 лет назад

      Haha.. If you watch my newer videos you'll see me in the right seat again because I'm closing in on my flight instructor certificate.. The end goal is to fly for an airline.. I've lived in the US for 11 years

    If ceilings were down to minimums, could an approach still be shot without an ILS glideslope? How would this be done?

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  4 года назад

      You'd change the minimums to those for the LOC approach. ILS takes you down to 200 AGL usually but the Minimum Descent Altitude on the LOC approach will be higher.

    @11:18 you write "Although" - you mean "Also the runway is in sight"?

      "Although" is what I wanted to say..

    • @berndl
      @berndl 8 лет назад

      +LewDix Aviation "We can now descend to minimums, although we have the runway in sight" makes no sense...

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  8 лет назад

      +berndl we have the runway in sight but I'm still going down to minimums as if I don't have the runway in sight.. Make sense?

    Did ATC give you vectors for the LOC approach the same way as a normal ILS, or did you have to navigate yourself from the IAP.

    Did you start your flight lessons at a controlled field? Cool paint job on your Piper by the way!

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  8 лет назад +1

      Yea I started at Kissimmee which is a Class D.. Then moved to Orlando Executive, another Class D. I do some flying occasionally from an uncontrolled private strip, but mostly out of Kissimmee now.. I wish I could say the plane is mine but it's not! It's a cool paint job though!
