Who do you mean by "we"? If the replacement of white people in Britain continues at the current rate, there won't be any of us left to look back in anguish at this clear proof of what has been done to us, without our consent or knowledge.
Those tills were huge. I remember the pale green bags with St Michael and I was small then. This was the Luton style fit out for M and S stores. Nice to see M and S recovering it's mojo after 2 decades of decline.
What a great surprise! I worked here from 84-87 so was eagerly watching for faces I remembered. Then, right near the end, there I was!! I remember the mad rush to get all the food on the shelves before store opening. Working the week leading up to Christmas was exhausting as the store was always packed. So many staff and tills open!! Not like nowadays. As someone else commented, lots of smiles, but it was still only 8:30. Thanks for the happy memories 😊
Fantastic video! I worked at M&S! Northampton store from September 1996 to June 1999 while I was at college. Wonderful memories, worked with great people. This was my inroduction to the world of work and I learnt such a lot which I used in later years in other jobs. Although the uniform had changed by the time I worked there how smart does everyone look in this video?! Pride in the job. I witnessed the rush and 'turkey run' in 1996 with people running through the store when the doors were opened to grab their Christmas essentials! The ordering system introduced in 1997 changed it but people would still be outside the store at 5am waiting for the doors to open at Christmas! Thank you for posting this essential part of our social history.
I did my work experience at that store in 1988! They had computers with screens that were green! Funny what you remember. And I liked the sense of team work and respect. Very smooth and assured operation...
It's sad. How we once shopped. I remember too you could not move for people in m and s and now its changing with online and many of the m and s main stores like this are closing. Nice to revisit how we once shopped. So much has changed but not for the better I feel.
Think you're projecting there. A novelty to be filmed. The 80s were pretty grim. Maybe they're smiling because they weren't one of the over 3 million unemployed.
@@zeddeka the 80s were certainly not grim, especially compared to today, you would have to of experienced it to of know, tho you may have missed Twitter
Interesting how things like lighting in shops changes over the years. Back then, lighting in shops was very dark by today's standards, which added to the sense of grimness that era had at times. Today, as technology has improved, the fashion is very much more to make lighting in shops brighter like daylight.
@@spider23000 Wow 😲. I lived through the whole era and I know it's a long time ago now but I'm amazed it was that far on! What were we doing with our Sundays?
No it wasn't if,as I think,it's the building in the Lower High Street. That had been there for a very long time but I'm not sure exactly when Marks & Spencer first occupied it. I think they were there in the 70s.
@@rjjcms1 _Lower High Steet_ Not sure that I'd call the location that, but anyway it's a little way up the High Street from where Queens Road used to come out. I don't remember who occupied the building before 1985.
It is fortunate that many have the foresight to record this era so we can look back on it in the future.
Thank you for your kind comment
Wow...Britain once actually had British people in it....

I wish I could have been around for this era of the department store, online shopping has done nothing but destroy what once was
Is it me or do people look happier back then, people actually smiling
All those wonderful 80's tunes kept us happy

Nostalgic, M&S Watford as I remember it in the 80's
What a great video! When M&S food was really good quality and it was a huge treat to shop in there. Sadly times have changed, for the worse.
Love this bit of film 👍
I can’t believe this is nearly thirty six years it only seems like yesterday 😮😄
Ps Watford used to be a top retail location. Shame that John lewis or Trewins as it was is no more.
Tons of staff in those days!
The staff were probably paid much more then than are being paid now(taking into consideration inflation)!
crazy to think that most of those people are probably dead now and just to think that 1985 was 35 years ago!!
It doesn’t seem like it though the time flies so quickly 😮
I am in this video age 20, now age 59 and very much alive and kicking 😅😅

That's one thing that has really improved over the years. Many 70s supermarkets look so dingy in retrospect now.
When M and S actually made stuff in Britain.
Nice clip! I'm sure the staff would've had Boxing Day off as well.
nowadays everythings opened on boxing day.
My Anne there how she got in the Video I don't know it was before the shop opening 1 min 30 sec in Red coat
good old days when sunday trading did not exist back then
It started in the mid/late 80s when Mrs Thatcher's government relaxed the trading laws.

@@rjjcms1 literally no idea. Shops just weren't open (except petrol stations). Was that when we just watched TV and ate roast dinner?

Very interesting. Was this store a brand new build for M&S, or was there already a store there?

A long line waiting outside a department store. That would never happen these day. 😂
excellent videography 💐🤍💯👏 bravo
I'm in the crumpsall 70s video on RUclips I was 9 years old 😍
Silver jubilee party and first holy communion crumpsall 1977
Just type in 70s crumpsall
The store just looks the same as M&S stores are today hasn’t change much
