Ngl for like the first 5 chapters I thought his gf was flonne because of the ribbon only to find out it was a generic village girl who is only slightly less annoying than seraphina
The talk about this game being connected to Disgaea 1 had me wondering if it would tie into Flonne as well if I recall correctly. I don't recall her being annoying though. Maybe because she's not as involved.
The story on 5 may be dry as jerky left out for a day, but the gameplay is prob the best in Disgaea. We don’t talk about 6…and maybe potentially 7 too (don’t know how 7 is aside from the horrors coming from 6). ^^;
Disgaea 5's plot is a B-Kung Fu movie that didn't double down on the premise enough. Many of the plot beats follow those kinds of films, but, enough effort is never really spent to build the world up, and it gets diluted by the kinda weird, interplanetary, overlord drama backdrop. I believe that the removal of the recruitment skits from Disgaea 3 and 4, however minor they may seem, was actually a pretty major contributor to this dilution of setting. Also not helping is its conflict with Makai Kingdom's establishing of lore, which, for one reason or another, is the view of the NIS-verse that seems the most popular with fans. Myself included. Also, for everything the main game did well mechanically, Disgaea 5 has earned my eternal enmity for ruining monster recruitment, and apparently being the model future games will follow. Along with the early game item world dive, one of the absolute highlights of Disgaea is coming up with a patented, brilliant plan to bring down the lowest level Rifle Demon, or Skeletal Dragon, or whatever senator by chapter 3. But, apparantly, the game is perfectly fine and well balanced if the player can grind up to Sage before chapter 2, but Eryngi need to be kept under strict lock and key, amirite? Petty rant of a monster lover over.
They basically made monsters as much of a pain in the ass as normal characters are to get in 4. I don't know why. I want to play the game with the cool new characters and my personal favorites, not be roadblocked into stupid shit that the devs decided to put into the game for whatever reason. I'm not a fan of monster recruitment either. I didn't use monsters that much so I wasn't too sure what a "feeler" was initially. I think that letting you recruit them after you see them is fine, so why change it from that? It's not like monsters are overpowered. If anything I think they're too weak outside one or two of them and the ability to magichange them, which is more of empowering another unit and not fixing the inherent issue that the monster just isn't strong on it's own. I also don't like how 4 and 5 trample on the pre-established lore either. Fans trying to remedy the bad writing by tying it to other games by saying things like "Overlord Zenon is from Cryoblood" just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Disgaea 1 and 2 are fine, and connecting 5 to them just tries to drag them down with it. I also really missed character recruitment skits. Not only because it gave me a lot of material to work with, but because they were great and made me want to make one of every unit.
To be honest I don't remember that much about Disgaea 3 so I just lumped it in with the other two. But yeah, I don't really like the shift in focusing on more cast members + the humor doesn't really hit as consistently for me.
@@Mint_Condition oh God no. The jokes are straight up garbage. Do you laugh at prinnies saying dood every sentence? No? What if every character is that only? I always go back to disgaea 2. And 3 was horse tranquilizer. Bleh
The only game from this series I haven't fully played is 3. (Only because I was renting it, and only got to play it at my friend's house since he had a PS3, but never beat the first chapter/episode) Love Disgaea ❤
I 100% Disgaea 1. Loved the story, loved the gameplay, love the Majin class. Now im playing through Disgaea 2 and watching these reviews to see how much I have been missing out on. Keep up the good work.
I came for the Disgaea review in-passing, but then you referenced Kamen Rider and now I'm sold. /s I've been playing 5 for a long time now and while I personally find the story on-par with dog piss (Disgaea stories tend to be subtle deconstructions/parodies. 5's writing was just 2's but worse; every martial arts anime ever made), I can at least appreciate the gameplay improvements. It tricked me at-first given a few weird early game choices. But as the game went on, I developed a soft spot for most of it. I'm really happy they made Chara World a board game tho. Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew CW in 3 and 4.
D5's story and most characters (not you Usalia) was so horrendous that I just couldn't play more after beating the game. The only reason I was able to power through to the end was because of the amazing gameplay, the life they gave to the creatable characters, and the hope that the story would get better... Yeah, I play Disgaea for the story and gameplay is more like the sides and spices to the main dish.
Yeah i feel this. It really did feel like they put the story first and foremost in 1 and 2, and then post game gave you some fun side stories and challenges that incentivized the grind, but the main story was still what kept you going to that point. I miss when disgaea actually had good stories...
I get that. I just can't say I like the stories much past the first two. It's a real shame because I know they can do better than this. I kind of feel like Disgaea is their cash cow and some of the passion is gone now.
with the announce of disgaea 7, i do hope 6 is just a testing ground for being the first 3d disgaea game. with the returning with alot of classes and other things , i believe it more but cautiously optimism is always my motto. still THEY GOT GHOST BACK BABY!!!!
When i saw the flashback were Lion GF dies, my mind went: Im sorry, i think we've been there before, have we been there before? -Flashback to Elise death in FE Birthright- Oh my God we've been there before! Heck, even their names sound similar.
When doing research I stumbled into a claim that Disgaea 5 rips off multiple anime that I've never seen before. It's possible that they are inspired by/copying the same material.
@@Mint_Condition to be fair to D5, Fire Emblem Fates was released after it. i just found funny how similar both situations were.(including the fact both Killia and Corrin were adopted into the respective families.) i don't think D5 story is the worst thing ever, heck, the game i mentioned has 5 times worse, but it does reeks of cheesy Fairy Tail trash anime. (Goldion should cancel Void's Crunchyroll subscription.)
Idk why but I thinking hated the blocks... Geo Prisms are back and better than ever. Feels like this is the best game in the series for me cause of a lot of things.
A Disgaea 5 meme review in 2021? Awesome. Awhile ago, I finished Disgaea 1 and 2 end game nonsense and I'm going through 5 now. I watched one of the cutscene compilations of 4 (and 3) though I have zero interest in 4 based on the story.
i dont think the story was that bad. sure cookie cutter but isnt too bad. usalia and red magnus arcs were my favorite part. i say the charater designs are my favorite compared to the other games. i say my only problem with disgaea 5 is that the girlfriend is back and feels it beats the purpose from moving on. the worst part of disgaea 5 IS THAT THERE IS NO FUCKING GHOST CLASS(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Yeah, it really is a shame that they remove series staples here and there each entry. I'm sad they got rid of Skull Mage in D6 myself. His replacement looks lame by comparison. Also yeah it's pretty lame that the girlfriend comes back. The entire last chapter is the biggest slap in the face. I just can't appreciate anything about the story anymore knowing how it all ends.
When you said that the only plot that was worthwhile was 1 and 2, I completely agree with you. NIS seems to always be treading narrative water since Adell and Laharl. I've been playing a lot of Disgaea 7 lately and I don't remember any of the major plot beats, however I do approve of the post game.
No, it's basically the Tear Ring Saga of the series. Under appreciated by fans, a return to form, and a bunch of weird shit and new mechanics going on that are referenced within the plot.
I paid plenty of attention. I played the game more than once, which meant that I knew how things were gonna turn out. Admittedly this sours the experience for me in a way it wouldn't for someone playing it the first time through. I mention that I enjoyed the story the first time through (for the most part) but the biggest issue is that nothing really matters once you know how it all ends with everything kind of reverted. It's a spit in the face for a game that I thought was ballsy for actually killing characters off for once.
I'm a bit harsh on it here, but you have to understand that I've beaten the game twice now, so I viewed the story through the lens of someone aware of the post game shenanigans. I liked it my first time through, but the post game leaves a sour taste in my mouth that spoils everything leading up to the climax.
you forgot you have to switch the language to japanese and that in all other games you have to turn off voice acting lest half tards who do flones voice and others will rape our ears with near 30 khz sound waves. disgaea 4 had the best story .2 had the only proper alternate story. 1 had the most endings. 5 seems like its got the most broken stat progression. same rarity bonus on gold named items which get thrown at you for going to the hospital or clearing floors on the item world (the reward for clearing in any number of runs x number of floors which all is pre 50 floors mind you) when leveled only to 10 and then used on 1 character give enough to push them to 1k atk. so here i am main story its level 20 somethings against my lvl 40 mc with 1k attack. i should be level 150 or so before i get 1k attack
Nah dog I'm in carnage land and these mfs are swole as hell. Everything up to this point was baby by comparison. Disgaea 5 is where the Baki characters come out as casual lower level enemies.
Well, when I was born there was a certain alignment of the stars. The heavens were parting in anticipation of this event. Millions of years in the making as the perfect arrangement was made, all so that I could be born at this very moment and be born of a certain temperament.. a certain destiny. When I was born the doctor uttered under his breath "star child.." and tried to have me aborted in post. Fortunately, my mother knew better. It had been foretold to her that a boy would be born on "that day" (my birthday) and that he would be able to communicate the language of the ancients, a forbidden tongue which allows natives to speak "those words". Forbidden words which can destroy entire nations at an utterance. Without even expending a spell charge I can cast Power Word: Kill, just because god allowed me to.
That's just my type of humor. These jokes exist outside of 4chan and within some of the other communities I am in/was in as well. It's not like I don't browse the site, infact I will admit to having posted my work there on more than one occassion. But I've also posted my work on Reddit. Am I catering to Reddit too? I wouldn't say I'm catering to anything, as that implies I'm intentionally putting these jokes in for someone else. I'm putting them in for me. I like Sam Hyde's work and I had this real drive to make that scene as it was incredibly accurate to how I actually dealt with Void Dark. I knew it was going in before I even started editing. It was a month long commitment and not some whim I had like "Maybe I'll put this in for 4chan." It's not like I've never posted my stuff there, but I'm not going to make stuff for other people because that's simply not fun. If I cared about catering to people (I assume to get views?) I wouldn't be doing it to 4chan, and I wouldn't be reviewing niche games that most people don't know about.
I didn't enjoy it enough to continue. Some people enjoyed it, but I haven't played it much outside of the streams I did when it released in Japan. There are a lot of positive reviews of it in the english speaking community, which is weird to me because from what I recall the game had some pretty tough critics in Japan, who are normally pretty reserved. I probably would have liked it more if I played through it all the way, but I would definitely put it on the lower tier of Disgaea games. Potentially even at the bottom.

@@Mint_Condition yeah and they weren't even reused in a way that made them interesting either. It's a shame we haven't gotten any good stories since 2, and i dont know if we still will
@@barrybeakdriver Their other games often have interesting plots, so I think it's more of a fault of Disgaea being drawn out too much. I've heard good things about Labyrinth of Refrain, so It's not like they've given up on writing entirely.
@@Mint_Condition yep labyrinth of refrain is pretty good, havent finished it yet tho, but i think more people oughta give it a shot
The story on 5 may be dry as jerky left out for a day, but the gameplay is prob the best in Disgaea.
We don’t talk about 6…and maybe potentially 7 too (don’t know how 7 is aside from the horrors coming from 6). ^^;
enjoyed the video, hope youre still enjoying disgaea! any plans to make a video for disgaea 7?
That's a hard maybe. I have to finish up my current video, and I haven't touched that in months lol.
@@Mint_Condition what about now
Disgaea 5's plot is a B-Kung Fu movie that didn't double down on the premise enough.
Im glad you also enjoy disgaea 2 more than 3-5. People act like I'm crazy for saying that but I'm not crazy. Good stuff
Thank you, thank you. I really love the series, and I hope you enjoy the other entries as well.
That thumbnail makes me smile.
I came for the Disgaea review in-passing, but then you referenced Kamen Rider and now I'm sold. /s
I've been playing 5 for a long time now and while I personally find the story on-par with dog piss (Disgaea stories tend to be subtle deconstructions/parodies. 5's writing was just 2's but worse; every martial arts anime ever made), I can at least appreciate the gameplay improvements. It tricked me at-first given a few weird early game choices. But as the game went on, I developed a soft spot for most of it.
I'm really happy they made Chara World a board game tho. Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew CW in 3 and 4.
thank you for respecting my privacy. I still have about 1 hour on disgaea 1 after owning it for months.
I was not referring to you since you are still playing it. I have atleast 2-3 other friends who started months to a year + ago and never finished.
@@Mint_Conditionwell I wouldn't have guessed
7’s pregame is even better than 5, so thankful after a messed up 6.
I love your videos, i hope you review the other games too!
If youre gonna stop with Disgaea then why bot talk about the other NIS SRPGs that never got a sequel? Like Soul Nomad or La Pucelle Ragnarok?
We'll see. I've got other stuff planned, but life is getting in the way.
@@Mint_Condition Have you tried replaying past levels that had exp geo panels?
with the announce of disgaea 7, i do hope 6 is just a testing ground for being the first 3d disgaea game. with the returning with alot of classes and other things , i believe it more but cautiously optimism is always my motto. still THEY GOT GHOST BACK BABY!!!!
I'm trying to stay cautious as well. Obviously I hope the game is good, but they're going to have to win me back after 6.
When i saw the flashback were Lion GF dies, my mind went:
Im sorry, i think we've been there before, have we been there before?
-Flashback to Elise death in FE Birthright-
Oh my God we've been there before!
Heck, even their names sound similar.
When doing research I stumbled into a claim that Disgaea 5 rips off multiple anime that I've never seen before. It's possible that they are inspired by/copying the same material.
@@Mint_Condition to be fair to D5, Fire Emblem Fates was released after it. i just found funny how similar both situations were.(including the fact both Killia and Corrin were adopted into the respective families.)
i don't think D5 story is the worst thing ever, heck, the game i mentioned has 5 times worse, but it does reeks of cheesy Fairy Tail trash anime.
(Goldion should cancel Void's Crunchyroll subscription.)
I've never played Disgaea, but your videos are fun. Keep it up
Idk why but I thinking hated the blocks...
Nice! Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did.
i dont think the story was that bad. sure cookie cutter but isnt too bad. usalia and red magnus arcs were my favorite part. i say the charater designs are my favorite compared to the other games. i say my only problem with disgaea 5 is that the girlfriend is back and feels it beats the purpose from moving on. the worst part of disgaea 5 IS THAT THERE IS NO FUCKING GHOST CLASS(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
I just can't appreciate anything about the story anymore knowing how it all ends.
new mint condition review lets fucking goooooooooo
Disgaea 3 Review when?
When you said that the only plot that was worthwhile was 1 and 2, I completely agree with you. NIS seems to always be treading narrative water since Adell and Laharl. I've been playing a lot of Disgaea 7 lately and I don't remember any of the major plot beats, however I do approve of the post game.
This review is a work of art
So basically Disgaea 5 is the Fire Emblem Engage of the Disgaea series?
No, it's basically the Tear Ring Saga of the series. Under appreciated by fans, a return to form, and a bunch of weird shit and new mechanics going on that are referenced within the plot.
@@Mint_Condition Ah. I see.
Yes, but what about Disgaea 7?
Who knows?
Is still don't get who this guy uh is supposed to be.
Uhhh??? hello??? police???
Funny review. Appreciate it
Best review of Disgaea 5! in my opinion :)
You finished the main storyline and you think the game is done? Oh you poor lost fool, you're just getting started.
What are you talking about? The story was great You just didn’t pay attention
I actually like the story of disgaea 5
This vid is straight fire.
Fun review
Item World is hard, ofc. It's a Disgaea game, they're always hard. 😂
Nah dog I'm in carnage land and these mfs are swole as hell. Everything up to this point was baby by comparison. Disgaea 5 is where the Baki characters come out as casual lower level enemies.
this is really funny
What makes you so special that you believe it’s ok for you to say that word?
Yeah, the Sam Hyde shoot out and 4chan jokes just get old, you're definitely catering to a certain group.
Soooooo, 6 sucked?
I didn't enjoy it enough to continue. Some people enjoyed it, but I haven't played it much outside of the streams I did when it released in Japan. There are a lot of positive reviews of it in the english speaking community, which is weird to me because from what I recall the game had some pretty tough critics in Japan, who are normally pretty reserved.
I probably would have liked it more if I played through it all the way, but I would definitely put it on the lower tier of Disgaea games. Potentially even at the bottom.
@@NicktheQuick71 Story stages are also Disgaea 4 huge where it's a slog to move around. The game is practically begging you to use the auto function. It's such a slog to get around.
