Yes. I think you are correct about not checking the Valve clearance. Thank you for all your great work. I gotta say you are pretty damn good at this. You're videos are always very well produced and it's always easy to follow and understand 👍
You were right in deciding not to inspect the valve clearances, especially with how little use was made out of the mower. Also how and where do you find the replacement parts for the equipment that you service ?
Even if the label on the engine shroud is missing, parts for the engine would be easy to find because the engine model is stamped on the block, near the oil dipstick on every 125cc, 140cc, 150cc and 163cc B&S engine that I've seen. The main differences between Craftsman, Troy-Bilt, Bolens, Yard Machines is the color of the deck and wheel style. All parts are pretty much interchangeable. I think Craftsman is the only one that will sometimes have the Blue handle on the starter rope.
Got lucky on that one! Didn’t need any parts. And awesome video, as usual. Thank you, I am learning a lot by watching. I even cleaned my mower after seeing you do it several times, and getting such great results.
Something about fixing up and cleaning mowers that is so satisfying. I love bringing simple push and self propelled mowers like this back to life and getting them all cleaned up. Totally agree with your reasoning, it obviously doesn’t have very many hours on it.
My opinion is, why not check the valves. If you know what you’re doing it only takes ten minutes. It could save from dealing with an unhappy customer. 😮
that's like taking medicine for something you don't have. The other reason is you risk damaging the valve cover gasket and causing a leak that'll need more time and money to address.
It's fine without checking the clearances, Not used much by the looks of it, started right up and sounded good. I worked on a friends neighbors yesterday that looks just like this except without the larger wheels. Maybe not a big deal but seems to be having little pop noise here and there. Cuts good though. Thoughts on the pop noise?
Okay this is interesting to see a second video where you spoke about the valve clearances. Last video I watched you did an adjustment as it took you five pulls to start several times. I never really thought of this being a problem in starting these push mowers; always thought it was a carb/fuel or spark issue. This is very interesting and good info that I will keep in my noggin for future reference.😂😂 Thank you for this!
That could be a coil issue or valve adjustment . I have a similar problem on a Briggs flat head but I haven’t fixed it yet Does it loose compression when hot ?
Personally, I agree with your logic about checking/adjusting the valve lash, however, only takes a few moments. For my own peace of mind I would check it. To each his own...Like you said there is no wrong answer. People who buy from you know it is a trusty machine and you have high standards!!! 🙂
thank you and I know it's not a big deal but it seems my rate is about 10% for a valve cover gasket leak. That means I have to spend more time to fix it, which is something we only have so much of.
I would check the valve clearances. I recently saw a video where a guy bought a brand new Murray mower from the store and he checked the valve clearances right out of the box and found they needed adjustment.
I wouldn't check the valve clearances, but my reasoning is a bit different from yours. It starts cold with a single pull. How much better can it get? Good video.
If you wanted to check the clearances while doing it you would’ve, otherwise it’s not worth taking the thing back apart to check them. Also off topic but is there such thing as having too much compression in a small engine ?
you would be correct. As far as too much compression, the answer is yes. Too much compression will lead to pre-detonation and would require you to run 91 or 93 octane fuel.
I feel like if you want to get the top dollar for the items you are trying to sell, they need to be clean. It should look like someone took care of it. I suppose it could also do with how dirty it is. If it is just dusty, that could probably be fine. But, if it would take more than a light hosing off. Shine that fker up!
Yeah, given what you found about the light usage and the healthy way it sounds I would not check the clearances. If you felt it could run better in some way, then by all means, check them.
hi...i have a toro mowe..it is a personal pace. it has new carb and new coil but after 5 minutes of star it turns off and it would not star again untill the next day...any ideas?
If you were to check the valve clearance the best time to have done it would have been after you cleaned the mower and was waiting for it to dry you can't do much until it dries time is valuable
The battery job got a sharpening and balancing from my pal and all is well. I'm going to have to quit mowing rocks. A new deck motor of which there are two are $569.69 from MTD. You can get them for $517 but that's it. Just GLAD that was the problem. 78% so no charging yet. I wouldn't check the valves either. NICE mower forwhat it is. Happy Weekend!
in the beginning one was for diagnostic and the other was for repair. Most did not understand the set up so I resorted to keeping them both and doing the same content
You are correct about the valve clearances, and not wanting to check them. That's a fantastic looking mower. Doesn't look like it's been used much at all. But, I wonder what the condition of the spark plug is, and to lubricate the cables and wheels?
The plug looked good, not rich and not lean. Yes on this mower project, I lubed the wheels and cables off camera for the sake of time. Besides these non propelled mowers hardly ever have wheel issues.
Just a heads up though I had a mower that the valve gap was correct and when I was mowing it blew the exhaust valve to bits and it was spitting some of the valve out and now it’s loud and it’s just flames none stop
You mentioned that care must be taken with the main jet and enlarging it for more fuel flow. Curious what you do to add more fuel without enlarging the main jet? I think I would have checked the valve clearance. Cheers 😊
sure, if the engine has a choke flap, I'd try adjusting the length of the arm to try and keep the flap partially closed. IF it doesn't have a choke but a primer bulb, I would insert a piece of cardboard between the filter base and the carb to help increase fuel flow. These ideas, are for testing. If you find out that engine runs better when less air goes thru the carb, only then would I try to enlarge the fuel jet.
thank you for these awesome videos i am a fellow small engine mechanic and whilst i mainly watch these videos for entertainment there are a lot that have also helped me out with my own repairs too keep doing what you do man its a real talent

This is the only lawnmower channel with high drama!
LOL!!!
High drama 😂😂
Totally agree with your repair strategy and reasoning for not checking the valve clearances. Another great video.
thanks, I know some would want me to check it, but we have to use our time wisely

thank you I really appreciate that
You were right in deciding not to inspect the valve clearances, especially with how little use was made out of the mower. Also how and where do you find the replacement parts for the equipment that you service ?
I use Ereplacmentparts dot com to find the part numbers for the stuff I need. Then I use the part number on Amazn to get the parts.
I have been watching home garage for 7 years love your work
hey I appreciate that

that's true for engine parts, but if the sticker for the mower, on the deck, is missing, that's what I'm talking about
What app/website do you use to find broken/unwanted mowers and trimmers, your videos motivate me and really teach me a lot
I appreciate that. I use FB marketplace and Craigslist.
Got lucky on that one! Didn’t need any parts. And awesome video, as usual. Thank you, I am learning a lot by watching. I even cleaned my mower after seeing you do it several times, and getting such great results.
no problem and I hope the mower looked better!
Something about fixing up and cleaning mowers that is so satisfying. I love bringing simple push and self propelled mowers like this back to life and getting them all cleaned up. Totally agree with your reasoning, it obviously doesn’t have very many hours on it.
I find it therapeutic, and quite gratifying to fix them too.
My opinion is, why not check the valves. If you know what you’re doing it only takes ten minutes. It could save from dealing with an unhappy customer. 😮

Check the clearances before selling the mower to avoid any comebacks !
I hear that
Don't order anything from Sears parts direct unless you want to wait for a long time to get the parts to get it fixed and running again
thank you for sharing that
@@HomeGaragechannel you are welcome home garage
No longer than it takes I myself would check the valve clearance, but hey, just so I know. Especially if I'm selling it ❤. God Bless ya'll
you make a good point

sure, I'm guessing it's running too rich with fuel. It's either the carb, or the choke bypass that needs adjusting.
I wouldn’t bother checking the valve clearances.
thank you
Quick question. When you convert a self propelled mower to push, do you need to remove the belt?
you don't need to but it's not needed anymore so I'd get rid of it.
Wow - the first mower that includes the gras bag in a long row of missing ones.
amazing
I've cleaned a ton of those carbs, and I didn't know the cartridge came apart, lol. You learn something new every day.
you and me both.
Hey dude do you know where i can find gromet, fuel lines, and a new primer bulb for my echo pb 250 ln blower?
sure Ereplacementparts Dot com
@@HomeGaragechannel alright, thank you!
Nah, u checked it thoroughly. It's always amazing how nice the mowers look after u are done. 👍
thank you, and I try my best if possible

no problem And yes it took a long time to equate the valve clearances to hot or even cold start up problems
Thanks for the before and after photo on the carb. Made the difference very obvious. Great job as always.
no problem!
Should i change the carb on my mower if it dies and barly starts when hot?
That could be a coil issue or valve adjustment .
I have a similar problem on a Briggs flat head but I haven’t fixed it yet
Does it loose compression when hot ?
it's worth a shot.
@@dfields9511 im not shure but it might
and just so you know its a 13 year old poulan pro mower whit a 625 series flat head briggs motor
Valves...I'd check...if you dont know the history "For sure" on the unit & your selling it...Why not go thru the paces
time, not enough of it, and if the gasket leaks, more time is need to fix it all to find out the valves are really close to spec.

sure thing, I'm using Super Heavy Duty Degreaser from Harbor Freight.
